In Greek mythology, Hercules was the son of the god Zeus and the mortal Alcmene. He’s known by many for his incredible strength and his myriad of adventures protecting people and defeating monsters.
Hercules, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and directed by Brett Ratner, tells the tale of Hercules “before he was a legend.” The new trailer is a compilation of footage of Hercules in different situations – shackled in chains, walking through a path of dead bodies, fighting a three headed hound, a large multi-headed sea serpent, and a ferocious lion. The trailer ends with “The Rock” crying out, “I am Hercules!”

The film is based off of Radical Comics’ Hercules by Steve Moore. The comic series portrays Hercules as more of a mercenary warrior than the hero we know him as today. It tells the story of how Hercules trains the Thracian army to become ruthless, all on the orders of the Thracian King.
It will be interesting to see if this film follows the comics in its depiction of Hercules early in his adventures. Given the narration to the trailer, it definitely seems as if Hercules will be doing a lot of soul searching to discover who he truly is.
The film also stars Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Mullan, and John Hart.
Hercules is set to open in theatres on July 25, 2014.
