While it’s no Magic Mike, we can definitely get on board with this casting news!
It has been confirmed today that Channing Tatum will be playing Gambit in an upcoming X-Men spinoff movie. At the London premiere for X-Men: Days of Future Past, producer Lauren Shuler Donner spoke with Total Film and said:
He’s a rogue, Channing — he’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. And he can handle the action, we all know that. And he’s got a really good heart … I think he’ll be great for Gambit.
She also touched on his southern charm, adding, “And he’s a southerner too.. he understands that world, and you know Gambit loves New Orleans.”
This news comes only a few weeks after news of a potential Mystique spinoff film, featuring Jennifer Lawrence as the blue-skinned shapeshifting mutants. Channing will follow in the footsteps of Hugh Jackman who, as Wolverine, has starred in two solo films.
Speaking about his love for the card throwing character, Channing said:
Gambit is the only X-Man I’ve ever loved. I mean, I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, but I guess just being from down South; my dad’s from Louisiana, I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, Florida. I don’t know, I just related to him … I would die to play him.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine both fared relatively well at the box office, bringing in $373 million and $415 million worldwide, respectively. However, both films weren’t very well-received amongst fans and critics. Perhaps Channing will be able to bring something creatively different to the table and make a Gambit film a bigger success than Wolverine.
X-Men: Days of Future Past will open in theatres on May 23 and it’s sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse, as been slated to open in theatres on May 27, 2016.
