The release date for one of Disney’s upcoming films, Moana, was announced back in October. Today, the studio has revealed the first actor to join the cast!
Dwayne Johnson has signed on to voice Maui, the mythological demigod who teams up with Moana to search for a legendary South Pacific island.
According to Hawaiian myth, Maui was a demigod who pulled islands from the sea and managed to lasso the sun from the islands’ tallest peak of Haleakala.
Moana will be directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, both of whom previously worked on Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and The Princess and the Frog.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Musker described the titular character as being “indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself. She’s the kind of character we all root for, and we can’t wait to introduce her to audiences.”
Moana will open in theatres in 2016.
