The Legend of Korra Book 4, episode 10 “Operation: Beifong” saw Lin, Opal, and Bolin, accompanied by the ever-sarcastic Toph, attempting to rescue their captured family from Kuvira’s clutches. Meanwhile, Korra visits the Spirit World to try and ask its inhabitants to help protect Republic City.
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
Lin, Opal, and Bolin reach the outskirts of Zaofu, but realize that they’ll have to get closer if they want to confirm that the Beifong prisoners are still inside. “Don’t bother,” a voice says. “All the prisoners have been moved.” Toph walks up behind them and suddenly it’s a family reunion. Lin grants Toph a “Hey chief,” which Toph returns. Opal gives her a hug and exclaims, “Grandma Toph!” Bolin, however, has the best reaction and begins to fangirl. He tells Toph that she’s his hero. Because of Bolin’s antics, Toph questions Opal’s decision to date him. We also meet Juicy, Opal’s sky bison who smells worse than Appa, according to Toph.
Back in Republic City, Varrick and Asami, backed by Tenzin, Korra, Mako, and Wu, pitch the idea of a “flying mecha suit,” which Asami got the idea for after watching dragonfly hummingbirds. Raiko asks where the spirit ray comes out and Varrick tells him that it won’t have one because that technology should not exist. Raiko argues that Kuvira already has it and the city needs to protect itself. Korra tells him that the vines attacked the city (in the last episode) because of Kuvira harvesting them in the swamp. Korra decides, instead, to ask the spirits in the city for help in defending their shared home.
Wu tells the group that they should be evacuating the people in the city in preparation for an inevitable attack from Kuvira. The group, especially Mako, is really impressed by Wu’s quick-thinking. He later reveals to Mako, however, that he only pitched the idea to impress Korra.
Baatar Jr. and Zhu Li are in the process of testing Kuvira’s large cannon-like weapon, in preparation for a test to be conducted the next day. When they try to fire it, it malfunctions, but Baatar is able to stop it before it blows up. He notices that a piece of the machine has been cracked.
The Beifong rescue team, plus Bolin, arrives at Kuvira’s factory and finds her weapon. Toph uses her earthbending to find her family, trapped in a cavern beneath the factory. They rationalize that Kuvira must have them suspended in cage so that they can’t use their earthbending.
At that moment, Kuvira arrives to get an update on the weapon’s progress. She’s not pleased with its glitches, but Zhu Li tells her that with machinery like this, there are bound to be some glitches. She assures Kuvira that she’s doing everything she can to fix it. Toph, however, tells her group that Zhu Li is lying.
Team Beifong decides to wait until the next day. They realize that with the weapon test being conducted, the prison will be left with very few guards. It will be their best time to get in and out safely.
That night, during dinner, Bolin asks Toph, rather boldly, who Lin’s father is. Toph answers that it was a man named Kanto who was nice enough, but his and Toph’s relationship didn’t work out. The conversation upsets Lin who berates Toph for allowing her to grow up without a father and for constantly refusing to address her feelings. She tells Toph that after “Operation: Beifong,” they’re through. Toph reluctantly agrees, if that’s what will make Lin happy.
The next day, Toph, Lin, and Bolin infiltrate the prison while Opal keeps watch. They find their family suspended in a wooden cage in the middle of a deep cavern. Lin uses her cables to swing over to them. One by one, she swings her family members out and over to Bolin, who catches them.
During the weapon test, another malfunction occures. Baatar realizes that a pin has been removed and tells Kuvira that this mistake could cause the entire weapon to explode. Kuvira questions Zhu Li, who denies knowing anything about it. But, Kuvira pulls the pin out of Zhu Li’s pocket with her metalbending and discovers that Zhu Li has been working against her this entire time. Zhu Li calls Kuvira a monster and tells her that she regrets nothing.
Kuvira orders that Zhu Li be tied up in the town that they’ll be testing the weapon on. She’ll get a firsthand look at what it can really do.
The Beifongs escape from the prison and Opal tells them that they’ve locked up Zhu Li in the town. Bolin goes to save her and Opal follows him on Juicy.
Kuvira fires the weapon when she realizes that they’ve escaped. Lin, Suyin, Wing, and Wei, go to fight Kuvira and her soldiers and cause the weapon to narrowly miss the town, and Opal, Bolin, and Zhu Li.
A fight ensues and Suyin takes the opportunity to face Kuvira one on one. Both earthbenders prove themselves to be admirable fighters, but Kuvira eventually knocks Suyin off the train. The family is eventually surrounded, but a wave of earth and rock knocks the soldiers and mecha tanks over and Toph reveals herself.
The family escapes on Juicy and Toph tells Kuvira that she “gives metalbenders a bad name!”
In the spirit world, Korra tries to ask the spirits for help in defending Republic City. But, they tell her that she’s doing exactly the same thing as Kuvira – trying to use spirits as weapons. Before she can convince them, they all disappear and she’s left standing alone.
Having escaped, Toph tells Suyin and Lin that she raised two great kids and that she hopes they can find someway not to hate her. Lin happily agrees.
Toph tells them that she won’t be returning to Republic City and that her fighting days are over. According to her, her back hurts. She comments that this is why no one saw Katara fight during the civil war in the Southern Water Tribe. At some point, you have to let the young ones take over the fight.
Opal eventually forgives Bolin and gives him a kiss. Zhu Li tells the group that they need to get back to Republic City because Kuvira is going to be attacking in only two weeks.
