If you’re a loyal Once Upon a Time fan, you’ve probably been scratching your head recently, wondering why the second half of the ABC series will be introducing three new villains?
Once Upon a Time is known for usually only introducing one villain for each half of a season. This time, for the second half of season 4, Cruella de Vil (Victoria Smurfit), Maleficent (Kristin Bauer Van Straten), and Ursula (Merrin Dungey), will be joining forces with Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) to get their happily-ever-afters.
But, why three? Entertainment Weekly asked executive producer, Adam Horowitz, if it was their way of getting away “from that tried-and-true formula.” Horowitz said:
“Yeah. We certainly don’t want to repeat ourselves. What we want to do is hopefully tell new stories for our characters. These villains were very interesting to us, not just because of who they were as villains, but because of the possibilities we saw of how they could connect to our characters and what they could reveal about our characters. What does their arrival mean for Regina? What does their arrival mean for Emma? What does it mean for Snow and Charming? We have some answers to those questions and we’re very excited about it.”
It will be interesting to see how the three new villains will effect each character, especially considering how they all left off at the end of the Frozen story arc during the first half of season 4. Don’t forget that Belle (Emilie de Ravin) was almost killed by the Queens of Darkness and was saved at the last moment by her future love interest, Rumpelstiltskin. I doubt she’ll be too happy to find out that the man she banished from the town is now working with the women who tried to kill her.
Most intriguing, however, will likely be Regina (Lana Parrilla), who sacrificed her true love to save a life. Now, she’s more determined than ever to find her happy ending, but how will she react when she finds out that Rumpel and three new villains are on the same quest as her?
Once Upon a Time will return on Sunday, March 1 at 8PM EST on ABC.
