When Grey’s Anatomy season 11 winter finale ended, fans were left wondering what the future might hold for Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) after he finally agreed to take a coveted position in Washington D.C.
For, what feels like, a long time, Derek and Meredith have argued back and forth about the opportunity Derek had to take a job in their nation’s capital. Meredith wanted Derek to take the job but told him that she was staying in Seattle and so Derek turned down the offer. Months later, he’s still bitter about the whole situation, even though Meredith encouraged him to go.
Basically, it’s just a huge game of tug-of-war at this point and it’s getting hard to keep up with whether I’m “Team Mer” or “Team Der”.
“We end them in a fairly dark place. He’s walking away and she’s sort of pushed him out the door. It’s like, you call someone’s bluff and push them out the door. He’s having a hard time, she’s having a hard time with this.”
The final moments of the winter finale were contrasted with the breakup between Meredith’s mother, Ellis Grey (Kate Burton), and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), which lead viewers to believe that this was the show’s way of confirming that Meredith was close to finally become a full-fledged doppelgänger of her notoriously cold and distant mother. “I love the echoes of her mother that are in there and what that means for her,” Rhimes said. “I love the idea that this could possibly mean that for the first time in her life at the hospital, she has neither Cristina [Sandra Oh] nor Derek, and therefore is essentially alone and how she’s going to cope with that. It’s going to be very interesting for her.”
Rhimes did confirm, however, that Derek would be back at some point, but that “It’s highly possible that we might not see Derek for a while.” She added, “There will be a time when you see him again, yes, but it’s probable that you won’t see Derek for a while.”
Grey’s Anatomy returns with season 11, episode 9 “Where Do We Go From Here?” on Thursday, January 29 at 8PM EST on ABC.
