CBS announced months ago that they were in the process of developing a live-action Supergirl TV series. Now, they’ve chosen which lucky actress will get to take on the iconic heroine.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Glee alum, Melissa Benoist, has been chosen to portray Kara Zor-El, otherwise known as Supergirl, Superman’s younger cousin.
Kara was born on the planet Krypton but managed to escape before its inevitable destruction. In the series, Kara arrives on Earth and is taken in by the Danvers family who teach her to be extremely cautious with her extraordinary abilities.
An unforeseen disaster will force Kara to use her superhuman abilities in public. Realizing what her powers can do for the world, she decides to become a full-fledged hero.
Benoist’s previous credits include two seasons on Glee, where she played shy but talented Marley Rose, the film Whiplash, opposite J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller, and roles on The Good Wife, Homeland, and Law & Order: SVU.
Benoist took to Twitter to confirm the news herself:
But seriously, sans emoji… I AM SO EXCITED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #Supergirl
