Many supernatural TV shows revolved around the idea of a “Chosen One” or a select few who wielded some sort of immense power, unlike anything normal people could comprehend. They often felt isolated and lonely because of their abilities, weighed down by the burden of great power and the responsibility that came with it.
Whether they were the single Vampire Slayer in a generation or a trio of powerful sister witches, destined to fight the forces of evil, their significance came from the fact that they were in a league of their own – almost untouchable and constantly feared by the other side.
So, it’s time that we acknowledge these select few. Here are 11 TV characters who knew the burden of carrying tremendous power:
Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell, and Paige Matthews (Charmed):
To the non-magical world, they were the Halliwell sisters – Prue (season 1-3), Piper, Phoebe, and Paige (season 4 – 8) – but to the magical world, they were the Charmed Ones – sisters blessed with extraordinary power, destined to vanquish the Source of All Evil and give the bad guys something to cry about.
Buffy Summers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer):
In every generation, a Slayer is born – one girl with the power and strength needed to fight vampires, demons, and other dark, supernatural incarnations. Throughout her seven seasons on TV, Buffy Summers knew the burden of true power and the bitter taste of a destiny that was completely out of her control.
Clark Kent (Smallville):
Before he was Superman, he was Clark Kent – a young, awkward high school student who held incredible abilities but couldn’t tell anyone. For a long time, before he took on his superhero alter ego, Clark was forced to hide his power from his friends and help people the best he could, without revealing what he was truly capable of.
Avatar Aang & Avatar Korra (Avatar: The Last Airbender & The Legend of Korra):
The Avatar is the one person who can bend all four elements (earth, water, fire, and air). With their incredible abilities, and their connection to the spiritual world, it is the Avatar’s duty to keep the world in balance.
Xena (Xena: Warrior Princess):
She was a gifted fighter with incredible abilities. Next to the ancient gods, Xena was one of the most feared people in the ancient world. Armed with a sword, a sidekick, an iconic battle cry, and a metal chakram, Xena traveled all over Greece, protecting those in need. Because of her reputation, it didn’t take long for people from all over to learn her name and, better yet, remember it.
The 4400 (The 4400):
There were 4400 of them, but they all knew what it was like to stand out because of something they had that no one else did. They came back from the future with incredible abilities, like clairvoyance, healing, and telekinesis, and were often ostracized because of powers they didn’t understand and that other people feared.
Sailor Moon (Sailor Moon):
Besides being the leader of the Sailor Scouts, Sailor Moon was the Princess of the Moon Kingdom, destined to rule over one of the greatest kingdom’s in history. Because of her lineage, she inherited the powerful Silver Crystal, a gem so strong that the Negaverse would stop at nothing to obtain its energy.
