Meredith's "Truly Harrowing" Trial On "Grey's Anatomy" Has Been Revealed
Meredith Grey has been through a lot over 12 seasons of "Grey's Anatomy." But when the show returns in February, the ABC character may be facing her darkest moment yet.

Earlier in the week, I reported on some new footage of Grey’s Anatomy season 12 that suggested Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) was going to come face-to-face with some form of violence. I theorized, along with some other publications, that she was going to be shot.

Thanks to two Grey’s Anatomy stars, we now have more information about the fate that is to befall TV’s most unlucky person.

“Meredith is attacked, and it is as terrifying and as shocking as you would expect for it to be,” Kelly McCreary revealed at Saturday night’s Television Critics Association press tour party. “Get ready to have your guts feel like they’re coming out of you, because it is truly harrowing.”

McCreary further revealed to EW that “Meredith gets attacked by someone you would least expect and it is just as terrifying, shocking and harrowing as it appears.”

“She’s attacked really brutally, really viciously and in a completely surprising, weird way,” Sarah Drew elaborated, while adding that everyone else is really just sort of sitting on the sidelines during the Meredith-centric episode.

McCreary, who plays Maggie Pierce, Meredith’s half-sister, admitted that the the Shonda Rhimes-created character has “had a lot of brushes with death,” while also acknowledging that “this time is different because, as Sarah Drew has actually pointed out, in other instances where Meredith came close to death, she has had a little bit of control over the situation. She could save herself in some way, or make a choice that might help herself. But in this case she’s physically impaired in a way that she has not been before.”

Meredith’s past has seen the doctor survive almost drowning, survive holding a live bomb in her hands, survive a hospital shooting, survive a plane crash, survive the death of her sister, survive the more than complicated delivery of her second child, and survive the death of her husband. The girl has seen and faced it all.

Something about what McCreary says, however, is almost chilling. Meredith is going to be attacked, which is a rather broad and unclear explanation that could account for almost any act of violence. Will Dr. Grey be assaulted by someone? Will it be on purpose or, as Grey’s Anatomy has shown in the past, completely by accident – an act of fate alone?

McCreary’s insight, however, doesn’t completely rule out Meredith being shot, so I could still be right about that. However, it does seem unlikely at this point, considering the fact that this incident is going to be “different,” as McCreary stated. It’s likely to be something that the ABC show has yet to depict.

Grey’s Anatomy
returns on Thursday, February 11 at 8PM EST on ABC.
