Imagine living in a world with no books – a world where the very idea of a book is about as absurd as the notion of being able to read. This is the world Traci Chee has created in The Reader.
In this debut novel, “Sefia knows what it means to survive,” but sometimes that isn’t enough. “After her father is brutally murdered, she flees into the wilderness with her aunt Nin, who teaches her to hunt, track, and steal. But when Nin is kidnapped, leaving Sefia completely alone, none of her survival skills can help her discover where Nin’s been taken, or if she’s even alive. The only clue to both her aunt’s disappearance and her father’s murder is the odd rectangular object her father left behind, an object she comes to realize is a book—a marvelous item unheard of in her otherwise illiterate society. With the help of this book, and the aid of a mysterious stranger with dark secrets of his own, Sefia sets out to rescue her aunt and find out what really happened the day her father was killed—and punish the people responsible.”
Imagining a world with no books is sort of like imagining a world with no oxygen or no chocolate frosting in a can. It got me thinking, however, about the books I could never imagine living without. The first to pop into my head, of course, was the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Fantasy, magic, the sort of things you can really lose yourself in have always been my go-to genres.
But, you know, I’m a real sucker for plain ol’ fiction, based in the real world and usually twisted around a very real social issue. Books like The Help by Kathryn Stockett and The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd are perfect examples of just that. If you haven’t ready either of these stories (both of which have been made into movies), then you’re missing out and need to find a secluded corner of your home and read them. You won’t want to put them down.
