Naya Rivera is being as candid as possible in her soon-to-be-released book, Sorry Not Sorry. According to an excerpt published in PEOPLE, Rivera reveals she had an abortion during her time playing cheerleader Santana Lopez on Fox’s Glee.
In 2010, Naya broke up with now-husband Ryan Dorsey to focus on her career. A few weeks later, she discovered she was pregnant and chose to have an abortion during a day off from filming. She decided not to tell Dorsey, to whom she is now married. The couple have a son together, 11-month-old Josey.
“It was very scary to open up about everything,” she says in the excerpt. “It’s not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should. I know some people might read it and say, ‘What the Hell?’ But I hope someone out there gets something out of it.”
In her book, Naya also opens about developing an eating disorder as a way to cope with her parent’s separation.
“I was so young and it just seemed to be the norm. Everyone was going through similar stuff,” she admits. “I had no way of knowing if I was going through it worse. I was juggling my feelings and it makes me sad that there are girls still going through that 15 years after I went through it.”
Sorry Not Sorry is set to release on September 13.
