It’s seriously the end of an era. Freeform has announced that season 7, Pretty Little Liars‘ current season, will be its last.
I don’t know if any one show in history has managed to fit in so much mystery and mayhem while somehow finding a way to stay relevant and addicting for its audience. While news of the show ending isn’t all that surprising, considering it had been mentioned a while back that season 7 would likely be the last, it’s still upsetting.
According to Karey Burke, executive vice president of programming and development at Freeform, it was always the network’s plan to end PLL after the seventh season.
“I came in knowing that this was the plan, and I’ve been here a little under two years,” Burke says. “It’s long been the feeling with the creative forces.”
Variety spoke with Burke about what conversations with the cast (Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, Shay Mitchell, and Sasha Pieterse) were like, to which she replied, “They’ve been phenomenal. They’re just great. I haven’t spoken to any of them today. I think they’re thrilled for the opportunity the show has given them and they’ve formed an amazing family. It’s bittersweet. I think they’re all excited for their next chapters.
So long, Liars. I think it’s safe to say we’re all going to miss you a lot.
