As of 2017, there were already more than 35,000 anime titles in the world, according to MyAnimeList. With so many choices, should you take the time to watch Soul Eater?
The shonen title was not new and it ran only for a very short period from April 2008 to March 2009 for a total of 51 episodes, along with 14 fillers.
The manga was created and illustrated by Atsushi Ōkubo, who was also put in charge when it was published in the magazine, Monthly Shonen Gangnam. It was later picked up by Bones Studio, but the anime stopped without any news of it coming back. For comparison, the manga series finished in August 2013. So, is watching soul eater worth it?
Soul Eater Story
The plot of Soul Eater follows like any other shonen series. Since it targets the young audience, particularly teenage boys, you can expect a lot of action, humor, and teen drama.
The story is about Maka Albarn, the daughter of Spirit Albarn who was a powerful weapon of Lord Death himself. Maka is a two-star Meister who wants to become the best Reaper Armsmaster in the land. She is paired with Soul Eater, who has the power to turn into a weapon. Also, they need to collect the souls of 99 evil humans and one witch before Soul can become a Death Scythe.
They both joined the Death Weapon Meister Academy, which is a school that trains humans or weapons-wielders on how to fight with their weapons, who are human themselves. The school is run by Lord Death himself.
But Why Are They Training?
A long time ago, there was a Demon God who laid waste to the place and almost destroyed humankind. And everybody believes that he will come back to propel the land into darkness and rule once more.
The Shinigamis are now tasked to train Meisters and their weapons who are powerful enough to defeat the Demon God. Of course, the stakes are very high. Failure to do so would mean the end of their world.
So, Maka and Soul need to work as one. However, in order to do so, the main characters also have to look within themselves and rise above their personal demons. For instance, Maka makes stupid choices, some of which can be a head-scratcher.
Is Soul Eater Worth Watching?
As to the question of whether watching soul eater is worth it or not, the answer is yes.
For one, the art is top-notch and the story is unique enough, even if it is shonen (read: formulaic). There are some original characters here that you can relate to, such as Death the Kid, for instance, who seems to suffer from OCD. In fact, the main complaint is you will probably finish the anime quickly, and probably have a long withdrawal period.
On the downside, there is no news about the studio picking up where it left off on the Soul Eater anime. So, you can never be sure if there would be new episodes. With that said, you can always continue the story by reading the manga. There are some changes in the story, starting with Chapter 23, so you should probably start from there.
