Tax Filings Show Biden Cancer Foundation Spending Millions on Wages & Nothing Research
The cancer foundation, started by Joe Biden, refused to devote a single dollar to medical research and invested much of its donations on lavish employee compensation, according to federal records.
The Biden Cancer Initiative was created in 2017 by the former vice president and his wife, Jill, two years after Beau’s son died of a brain tumor.
The charity did not distribute grants or study funds in its first two years but invested millions of dollars recruiting former Obama-Biden administration assistants.
In just two years, the foundation “passed” its activities when Joe Biden and his wife stood down to run for the presidency.
NYP reports: The charity collected $4,809,619 in donations in fiscal years 2017 and 2018 and spent $3,070,301 on the payroll in those two years. The founder of the association, Gregory Simon, paid $429,850 in fiscal 2018 (July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019), according to the most recent federal tax returns by the foundation.
Simon, a retired Pfizer executive and long-time health lobbyist who led the White House cancer task force in the Obama administration, saw his salary almost twice the $224,539 he made in fiscal 2017, according to tax filings.
Danielle Carnival, former chief of staff for the Obama Disease Campaign, the Cancer Moonshot Task Force, took home $258,207 in 2018.
That year the charity spent $56,738 on conventions and $59,356 on flights. The next year, travel costs rose to $97,149, and the non-profit spent $742,953 on seminars, tax filings.
But the number of grants allocated was zero.
Simon said that the key point of the charity was not to award grants and that its goal was to find means of accelerating care for everyone, irrespective of their economic or cultural context.
Biden led the Cancer Moonshot Task Force when he was veep after Beau’s son died of a brain tumor in 2015. Since leaving office, the Biden Cancer Project aimed to continue its attempts to offer “urgent” alternatives to cancer care, according to a 2017 press release announcing its launch.
The Bidens filled the board with top oncologists and celebrity cancer patients, including singer Jimmy Gomez of the Black Eyed Peas.
In just two years, the foundation “passed” its activities when Biden and his wife stood down for Joe Biden’s presidential race.
While the organization is still officially operating, according to the IRS, Simon said in an interview in 2019 that without the Bidens at the helm, the charity has lost its edge.
