While most people focus on social distancing, face coverings, hand washing, and even self-isolation to protect against the deadly coronavirus now ravaging the world, too few are paying enough attention to two other factors critically important to the risk of developing a Covid-19 infection and its potential severity.

Those factors are immunity, which should be boosted, and inflammation, which should be suppressed. Severe Covid-19 illness is accompanied by acute inflammation throughout the body, including the lungs, heart, and brain.

Older people have weaker immune defenses and are especially vulnerable to this disease and its potentially fatal consequences. With advancing age, the natural killer cells, a major immunological weapon, become less effective at destroying virus-infected cells. At the same time, inflammation in tissues throughout the body also increases with age. This allows the coronavirus to get into the body, bind to molecules in the nose and lungs, and wreak havoc.

People who are obese, have cancer or chronic health conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart conditions have higher inflammation in the body as well and hence, are more vulnerable to a severe outcome when infected with Covid.

Success: A Challenge to Change.

Western medicine systems based around hospitals, highly trained professionals and high-tech equipment with little role for patients and care-givers has been remarkably successful. Indeed, science and technology are continuing to revolutionize healthcare: who would argue many infectious diseases have been controlled, maternal health (mother/newborn mortality) improved and that vaccine development has curtailed large-scale viral epidemic.

However, as our populations grow older and they suffer more from long-term conditions such as diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer treatment/care and coronary disease — they can’t simply be treated with a system of diagnosis and control set up to fight the diseases of a half century ago.

The basic problem in all wealthy countries is diseases have changed but health services haven’t really. The health problems of the early 21st century are not the same as those of the middle of the 20th century — when current western healthcare systems were formed.

They require services in the home and community as well as in the hospital and, critically, the involvement of patients and care-givers.

Larger Effect on Disease than Smoking

As reported in 2010, an analysis (of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from1993 to 2008 of 3.5 million adults) by researchers at Columbia University and The City College of New York showed that obesity now had a larger effect on disease, while smoking had a greater impact on deaths. Why? The number of adult smokers decreased 18.5 percent over that time, while the proportion of obese Americans increased 85 percent.

Findings like these now account for an increasing majority of illness and healthcare costs in richer countries.

Of course, as witnesses by highly publicized healthcare reform last year, changes are trying to be made. Yet, reimbursement systems reinforce the old model, institutions and professional training are largely constructed around it, commercial interests promote it and the public see hospitals as the bedrock of healthcare.

Dread Cost of the Clinic; Fear Change Even More

As we’ve seen most challenging of all are questions about resources. What should someone do if they can’t afford the system but fear approaching (generally) more affordable alternative or complementary medicinal techniques?

The answer appears to lay in grassroots wellness training of health workers and introducing technology that is “translatable in education and practice” to the mainstream. As Lord Nigel Crisp, former chief executive of the NHS and Secretary of the Department of Health in England notes in his new book Turning the World Upside Down: The Search for Global Health in the 21st Century: “when old methods no longer work, are we willing to look outside the mainstream for new ideas? Or are we content to stick with professional structures and working arrangements created 50 years ago?”

Bananas are a great source of fiber and potassium. They do have a high sugar content so eat in moderation. Coconuts have anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties and are one of the best sources in the world for MCFA (medium-chain triglyceride fatty acids)

10. Lemon Tuna Avocado Snack. Halve an avocado and scoop out the flesh. Mix with lemon juice and tuna. Serve in the shells. Good protein, good fat.

Swimming and Skin Care – Repairing the Skin Barrier

Often pool swimmers complain of water related skin problems. Chlorine has a caustic effect, causing a disruption to the Stratum Corneum (the outermost layer of the epidermis) the skin’s barrier. This skin barrier, was coined by Dr. Peter M. Elias of the University of California, San Francisco, an expert on skin barrier and epidermal biology.

The Stratum Corneum functions to form a barrier to protect underlying tissue from infection, dehydration, chemicals and mechanical stress. This skin level consists of dead cells (corneocytes) composed of 15-20 layers of flattened cells with no nuclei and cell organelles. These corneocytes are embedded in a lipid matrix composed of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids.

This barrier is produced through a process called desquamation, cells shedding from the surface of the stratum corneum, and balancing proliferating keratinocytes (cells that produce keratin, a beneficial protein for the body). Then these cells migrate through the epidermis towards the surface in a journey that takes approximately fourteen days.

In other words, we are born with a healthy skin barrier that is capable of naturally keeping skin moist, and hydrated. Unfortunately, over time that layer of skin gets damaged from things like cold weather, excessive sun exposure, prolonged water submersion, wind conditions and other environmental factors. These causes break down the components of this layer of our skin and leave it without protection, susceptible to pruning, wrinkly skin, inflammation, bacteria, dryness, itchiness and allergens – damage.

Can Drinking Water Help to Hydrate Skin?

We are made of water (the average adult human body is 50-65% water). Copious quantities of water from our bodies is excreted daily. Therefore, the drinking of water is important because it replaces our supply. According to the FDA, we are to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day to maintain what we lose. The myth is that by doing so our skin is then adequately hydrated. For skin purposes, unfortunately, the consumption of water doesn’t help all that much. In fact, the water we drink has a lot to do before it even gets to the skin. Think of the long and winding path water takes in our bodies and you’ll note how many stops it makes to other organs, etc., before it even makes an appearance at the surface of the skin, for example:

1. Ridding the body of toxins,

2. Aiding with our digestive system,

3. Helping our organs function properly, etc.

Therefore, in theory, we need to apply water to the skin topically and somehow hold it there in order to keep skin moist, hydrated and wrinkle free. Moisturizers seek to accomplish this very task.

Moisturizers and the Skin Barrier

Despite what some advertisers tell us, many moisturizers available today do very little to keep moisture in the skin. That is because very few can penetrate the stratum corneum. With that truth, can the skin barrier even be repaired? The good news it that ‘yes’ it can. Because this layer of cells is made up of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, it stands to reason that if those elements are depleted causing damaged skin then adding them back to the skin will improve its texture. We accomplish this by putting the missing ingredients of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids together in proper measurements (formulas) so that they work homogeneously to improve the skin. The mixture is key because just as we initially had them in our bodies, we must replace them similarly.

Miklos suggested the I Can’t Wake Up! Alarm Clock app to me before bed the other night. Having to scan a barcode in order to shut the alarm off? Excellent concept. I hopped onto Google Play and downloaded it free to my Android phone. (There is a paid version, but I think the only difference is that it doesn’t run ads. Don’t quote me.) Well, it definitely didn’t shut off the first morning. I had selected Memory and Barcode as wake-up methods. Memory did a good enough job of making me want to stab my eyes out while the alarm rang. I had however not realized I’d have to install the barcode scanner separately (Menu > W.U.M Preferences > Barcode Method > Method config info), and, of course, choose which barcodes to scan.

… Listen, I was tired when I downloaded the app.

After shutting off my phone to silence the infernal, seemingly endless racket it was making (proclaiming that the barcode scanner was not installed and simultaneously demanding I scan a barcode), I fell back asleep.

I was skeptical. Of course, I had not given I Can’t Wake Up! a fair shot.

The next night, I configured the Barcode method, scanned my barcodes and added the Pairs method. Now my wake-up program was a fail-safe random ordered Memory/Barcode/Pairs combination. I would have to solve all three. Surely I’d be awake by then.

The alarm went off as it should. And I was disappointed that it chose Barcode first. I had to leap out of bed and scan my face-wash. Disgruntled, I zombied myself back into the bedroom solving the Memory puzzle and then choosing Pairs (in this case, choosing one of two city names to match with the country it belonged to). The alarm is a bit less effective when you crawl into bed because your house is cold and begin to text someone who loses interest after 20 minutes. I fell back asleep for 2.5 hours. Crap. It has an Awake test ensure you actually woke up. Perhaps I should select this option for tomorrow morning, yes?

Let me say, I Can’t Wake Up! Alarm Clock is good. It’s very customizable with lots of interesting options and it really does get you out of bed. The ringing is annoying enough and doesn’t stop until you’ve completed your chosen tasks. Ensure you have a warm house to wake up to, or at least some slippers and a robe on to ensure coziness when you get out of bed, and you’re golden.

The only star I take away from this app is half because it installed some other program I had to delete right away (hopefully it actually deleted), and half because the app doesn’t physically grow hands out of the phone to slap my face around until I’m awake. I guess that’s my own issue, though.

Born in Portsmouth, Virginia to a middle-class family, Perry Edwin Ellis is one of the most successful fashion designers in today’s modern age. He was born on March 3, 1940 and was raised comfortably by his family with the support of their own fuel company. He studied in Williamsburg, Virginia taking up a degree in Business Administration, which he later used in managing his own fashion business.

Perry Ellis’ interest for fashion first came out while he was running his own department store retailing in Virginia. He established that firm to gain experience in the world of fashion simply as a merchandiser and buyer.

In his search for the ultimate experience, he joined the sportswear company owned by John Meyer in New York. The Vera Companies approached him in the 1970s for one purpose – to make designs for the Vera itself. It was only in 1976 when Perry Ellis decided to create his own line of women’s sportswear he called the Portfolio.

Since the introduction of the Portfolio, critics and consumers of fashion products praised Perry Ellis as one of the most outstanding designers of sportswear. Particularly the women love him for one reason – Ellis creates his own designs, each boasting a clean cut casual style. He established his own fashion house with the help of The Vera Companies, and named it Perry Ellis International. His showroom was first opened on Seventh Avenue in New York City.

Months after the release of Ellis’ casual styled sportswear, he came up with a menswear collection which was introduced successfully in the world market. Critics considered this product line as modern classic in appearance and style. This collection was followed by other successful launches; now featuring shoes, furs, accessories, and fragrances.

Perry Ellis International continued to expand throughout the 1980s. A number of labels were then released, including the Perry Ellis Collection and the Perry Ellis Portfolio. In 1984, the company formed a cooperation with Levi Strauss. The Portfolio line was revised one year after, and in 1986 the company saw a rise of about $250 million in their product revenues.

The House of Perry Ellis was transferred to a new management headed by Robert L. McDonald, Ellis’ close friend, in 1986 after Perry’s unexpected death. Marc Jacobs then took the role of Perry Ellis as a fashion designer for the company, who at that time was a fresh graduate. Jacobs started his own labels just in 1993, and it was him who became the head of the House of Louis Vuitton in Paris.

Perry Ellis International has undergone several other changes in the company management. Manhattan Industries was traded to a licensee of Perry Ellis, the Salant. It was from them where a Miami based textile company acquired the Ellis House in 1999. The corporation also acquired several other companies, including the Original Penguin and the Ping collection of the golf brand, both acquired early in the year 2003.

Today, the House of Perry Ellis is continually producing all the fashion products it is known for. Massive expansions are expected to occur with more and more consumers becoming interested to Perry Ellis’ great collections.
