Advantages of Hydroponic Gardening

Published

on

By

So, you have decided to grow a garden this year? Well, before you go spending a lot of money unnecessarily, you should take a look at all of the advantages of hydroponic gardening. Hydroponic gardening is garden work at its best. There is virtually little to no dirt involved in hydroponic growing. Hydroponic gardening is the use of water and light to grow vegetables and fruits. Hydroponic growing means less time spent and less money wasted on unnecessary materials. You do not need to spend money on fertilizers and pesticides. Nor do you spend hours weeding and tilling the soil. Hydroponic gardening is very beneficial in that the yields on crops are much higher and the plants will generally produce richer, brighter, and more nutritious fruits.

To start your own hydroponic garden, you need to decide where you will settle your plants. The hydroponic growing of plants generally means that you need a decent amount of space to allow the plants to grow. Most people use a greenhouse. Hydroponic growing of plants is quite simple and virtually anyone can do it. All you need is to do a little research, especially if you are just starting out. Ask questions from people you know who are into hydroponic gardening. Find out what kind of nutrients your plants will need. Hydroponic nutrients are usually more concentrated because of the fact that they need to be added to the plants and their growing environment. It is best if you find a combination solution that will provide all of the nutrients necessary for your plants to grow.

Another advantage to hydroponic gardening is that you can grow your vegetables and fruits all year round. The most ideal situation is indoor hydroponic growing. This way you can control not only the light and water, but also the amount of pests that will affect the yield of the plants. When growing a garden outdoors, you must be prepared to lose some of your crop yield due to pests, the weather, and other factors. However, with hydroponic growing, you can eliminate most of these factors. You can also ensure the amount of hydroponic nutrients that your plants are getting. By using hydroponic nutrients, you can control the strength of the root systems and control the flowering potential of your plants. Different types of hydroponic nutrients can encourage your plants to produce more flowers, which in turn provide more fruit from plants such as the tomato plant. Other types of hydroponic nutrients increase the size and foliage of the plants. Hydroponic nutrients are basically plant food. This is as necessary to the plant growth as water and light.

So now we know that there are at least three things that are essential to hydroponic gardening: light, water, and hydroponic nutrients. Without these three things, your hydroponic garden will undoubtedly fail. Learn about the essentials of hydroponic growing to ensure a wonderful year round garden. You will not regret it when you see the bountiful harvest at the end of the road.

Cleaning Polished and Unpolished Porcelain Tiles

Published

on

By

Coming in a myriad of different colors, shapes, textures and finishes, porcelain tiles are a wonderful option to consider when tiling your home. Whether it’s a small back splash behind your sink, a full counter, or floor the simple earthiness or complex elegance of porcelain is ageless. However, over time dirt can cause abrasions in the tile and make it look dirty and scratched even when its newly cleaned, it can also change the texture of the tile and make it irritable to walk on or difficult to work with on a table. Because of this and the simple needs of keeping a home clean, there have been many different recommendations on just how to keep porcelain tiles clean. The three major types of porcelain tiles are polished, unpolished and textured tiles, which each need to be considered carefully before choosing a cleaning method.

Polished porcelain is by far the most common porcelain tile because of its shining and eye-catching surface, which is also one of its most difficult things to sustain for long periods of time. The shine is dazzling but may also seem to get dirty quickly and any kind of surface scratching may make is permanently seem so, which is why it is so important to pick a non-abrasive cleaner and cleansing tools like a sponge or soft bristled brush to clean it. It is also important to first vacuum or sweep the floor as swirling water with dirty particles in it can damage the surface as well. Rinsing and drying is important to protect against water spots and buffing to make sure that it shines just as brightly as before.

Unpolished and textured porcelain tiles do not require so much careful consideration since they do not shine quite like polished porcelain, but because of their more porous or textured surface, they do tend to be a little more difficult to clean thoroughly. After sweeping any loose debris off the floor, saturate it with diluted commercial cleaner or a mild homemade cleanser and let it soak for about five minutes to fully clean the many divots of the tile. Use a nylon-bristled brush to scrub the tile to loosen the dirt, quickly wiping it away with a rag afterwards. Rinse thoroughly and soak up the excess water afterwards to allow for complete drying. Also, unpolished porcelain is extremely vulnerable to staining and should be avoided in high traffic areas or wherever the high possibility of spilling may be; this makes it a typically avoided kind of tile with families who have pets or children.

Keep in mind that cleaners with harsh chemicals will need to be diluted to a mild version of themselves, otherwise they could damage the color, texture or finish of your tiles, and cause your grout to become weak, eventually leading to permanent damage. Waxes, sealants and oil-based cleaners also tend to discolor the tile with a thin film over it, possibly changing the color of your flooring and making the traction more slick, which may contribute to accidents from slipping on the floor, especially if wet.

How to Resurrect Your Old Treadmill and Explode Your Fitness Potential

Published

on

By

First off, many who have a home treadmill don’t have a typical home gym set up. Instead the treadmill usually resides in the basement next to the water heater or in the bed room next to a pile of laundry.

Like any other type of work, exercising on a treadmill requires a supportive environment where you feel good and full of energy. Without a full gym set up, it’s easy to let the treadmill become just another piece of clutter rather than a focal point of the room. So pack up, pick up and clear out any clutter and make the treadmill a primary focus to the environment.

It’s not the den, or the kid’s room, but instead it’s now the treadmill room.

The next step is to simply get on a regular schedule. Part of the lure of home exercise is the notion that you can workout at any time without having to conform to a gym schedule. While this is certainly a plus, a workout that can be done at any time usually doesn’t get done at all.

So schedule your treadmill time just like any other important activity and defend that time like the essential activity it is. Don’t fall for the “I can just workout later in the day” temptation that home gyms present. Even if you do get to the exercise later chances are you will feel more rushed, more tired and less motivated after having to “make up” for your missed time.

The final step is to make sure your mind can be occupied while you use your treadmill. After all, walking in place on even the worlds best treadmill can be a rather boring experience. The best way to solve this issue is not so much to distract the mind but rather stimulate it.

I know a lot of people like to watch TV while on the treadmill but I find this can be a poor mental Band-Aid if you end up just flipping channels and watching programming that you normally wouldn’t watch.

I recommend scheduling your treadmill time during when you would normally watch TV so you spend less time sitting, and you can still catch your favorite shows. I’m also a big fan of pod casts because they always give you something new to look forward to plus you can learn some really great stuff as you stride along.

Also:

You can also find custom pod cast and I-phone treadmill workout programs that can motivate and guide you with workouts that are more than just a steady pace.

Little things like an air circulating fan and a water bottle can help keep your energy up so the exercise doesn’t feel so harsh. Plus it’s a good idea to use some traditional exercise clothing rather than street wear to stay cool and comfortable.

Home Schooling Nine to Twelve Year Olds and Socialization

Published

on

By

When home schooling a child between nine and twelve years old, there is a lot of pressure for peer pressure. Keep in mind that not all children undergo this pressure to be with and like their peers, while distancing themselves from their parents. These preteens still need plenty of attention, eye contact, positive reinforcement and praise, personal communication, and good interaction with their parents. Believe it or not, children at this age do still enjoy being read to. Keep having positive attitudes toward learning; focus on making learning interesting and engaging. Make sure you use positive constructive criticism with the least amount of academic pressure possible. Focus on providing a safe, secure learning environment that encourages love, acceptance and reassurance. This will, in time, raise their feelings of self worth and help them understand where their values lie.

At this tender age of hormones, mixed emotions, changing feelings, group planning in curriculum is suggested. Preteens prefer learning skills that have a reason or purpose in real life. For instance, instead of offering busy work in language arts, ask your child to write a letter to a manufacturing company in regards to a defective household product for you. Not only would this make the child feel important but the learning task would be a skill much needed in real life. When learning math, use real life examples with money and budgeting, perhaps even balancing a checkbook. Use graphs and charts to set goals with earned money and savings. Reading about science from a textbook is one way to learn the subject, but performing experiments or identifying specimens in nature is much more engaging. Daily and weekly chores are necessary to learn responsibility and accountability as an integral part of the family.

Remember to always model what you want to teach. Learn new topics together. Dissect a grasshopper for science, work on the family budget together, etc. Homeschooling allows parents to design a curriculum that benefits their children. Find out where your preteen has strengths and weaknesses and plan your curriculum around that.

Homeschooling and Socialization:

When parents talk about home schooling their children, the most common concern is regarding socialization. Parents are concerned that their children will not learn how to adapt to social situations. Unless the homeschooling parent decides to isolate their children completely from the outside world, this is impossible. In fact, children who are home schooled have more interaction with people of all ages, not just their age group. The average home schooled child attends more educational field trips during the year than the non home schooled child. In addition, home schooled children have more opportunities for after school activities, such as music lessons, sports, and hobbies.

Children who home school feel equally comfortable with younger children, peers, and adults of all ages. Children who home school have daily social interactions with the family, neighborhood and the community. Because of this, studies have shown that children who home school have higher self esteem. Children who attend school do not experience real world situations, while home schoolers are definitely more prepared for the real world.

The type of socialization that is experienced in schools is often negative. Large school settings harbor conformity, teasing, bullying, defiant behavior, popularity contests, and competition. No wonder home schooled children have higher self esteem; children at home are learning kindness, patience, sharing, respect, and understanding. These home schooled children are not exposed to peer influences which foster peer dependency. Peer dependent children show diminished positive socialization, such as self-worth, confidence, reverence for their parents, and trust in peers. Although home school children may play with other children in the neighborhood and experience this peer dependence, strong morals and values are being taught at home that override these negative experiences.

Home schooled children learn to listen to their own instincts and let that guide them to make their own decisions. Conforming to a peer social group that does not value individuality does not foster independent thinking, which is necessary for a successful life.

Garage Tile Flooring – Advantages and Disadvantages

Published

on

By

Opinions are divided as to what constitutes the best garage floor. Is it rolled flooring or is garage tile flooring the answer? Whatever your choice of garage flooring and this is really an individual decision, adding garage flooring is a good decision. Some of the benefits include: adding warmth to cold floors; makes cleaning very easy; improves the look of the garage taking it from dowdy to cheery and bright; provides sound proofing anti-fatigue properties to a certain degree.

This article talks about garage tile flooring and the advantages and disadvantages you should consider before installing it in your garage.

Tiles date back to the middle ages and have always been a popular flooring option. From the simple to the ornate choices are virtually limitless and you can have a field day choosing your tiles.

Garage tile flooring comes in two types:

Interlocking type – these tiles are square shaped compartment mats that have to be connected.

Peel and stick type – these tiles bond with the concrete.

The interlocking tiles are suitable for any garage but are not as durable as the peel and stick type of tiles. On the other hand, peel and stick tiles can only be fitted on garage floors which are either brand new or extremely clean. The tiles will not bond with heavily stained floorings.

For some people garage tile flooring is the only choice and they view it as the best option. Tiles are easier to install though the protection provided to concrete can be achieved by painting as well. Tiles however are far easier to install but garage tile flooring does come with its own pros and cons as we shall see going forward.

Cost of garage tile flooring can add up, which is one of the drawbacks to this method. You can get a kit from a home improvement store for a single car garage, which could easily set you back $500 plus. Of course one would have to consider quality, design and brand as well. You can install a floor mat but this will not be so easy to clean or maintain in the long run.

Garage tile flooring is one of the easiest to install and comes second only to floor mats. Interlocking tiles simply have to be connected as you would do with building blocks. The peel and stick, simply need a clean garage floor, then you just peel off the back and stick the tiles to the concrete.

Installation of garage tiles though extremely easy is a very time-consuming job. It is recommended that you divide your garage into sections and split the job to make it easier on yourself.

The drawback to installing interlocking tile flooring is the tiles tend to shift about because they are not firmly fixed in place. The peel and stick variety will not adhere firmly to a less than clean floor; we all know that finding a cleaner than clean garage floor is a near impossibility.

In terms of maintenance, tile flooring is one of the easiest to manage. Run your damp mop over the floor once a week and you will have a clean floor. You can always do a through clean up periodically using water and detergent to get rid of oil stains and such.

Before you undertake your garage tile flooring project read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and good luck!

Snow Melt Mat Prevents Water Mess on Garage Floor

Published

on

By

Tired of cleaning up the water mess on your garage floor caused by melting snow from your vehicle? You can say goodbye to mopping. A snow melt mat can be placed on your garage floor and you simply park your vehicle on it to absorb the melting snow.

With this garage mat it takes the worries out of falling on wet, slippery surfaces. Because it absorbs the melted snow it will also prevent water damage to your garage cabinets, boxes stored on the floor and other items you may have stored in your garage.

The backing of the mat is waterproof with a non-slip rubber material that prevents the water from reaching the surface underneath the mat. The mats come in 6 foot widths and in lengths of up to 150 feet. This width is adequate for most vehicles. If a wider length is need the product is also available in 3 foot widths. You can simply purchase a 6 foot section and a 3 foot section and place the mats side by side to get a 9 foot width.

A snow melt mat is easy to use. Simply roll it out on the floor of your garage. To decide the length of mat you need, measure the length of your vehicle and add one foot to the front and one foot to the back.

This absorbent mat will absorb gallons and gallons of water. Generally the mat does not become saturated with water during a winter because of natural evaporation. In the event you have a very harsh winter and the mat becomes over saturated you would need to vacuum the excess water up.

In the Spring, after the mat has dried up completely, you can vacuum the dirt and gravel that came in with the snow. It is also a good idea to flip up the edges of the mat to dry it out in case any water got under the mat on the edges. The mat can be left in place on your garage floor year round. The mat will not wear out by driving in and out on it. The only way you can damage the mat is by turning your wheels on it while parked on it.

With a snow melt mat, the worry about messy floors, slip and falls, damage to garage cabinets and concrete damage caused by road salt is eliminated.

Home Vegetable Gardening – Growing Claytonia

Published

on

By

Although this salad green is not well known, it is very tasty and grows well in cooler climates, making it a perfect addition to your fall, early spring or even a winter garden.

It is also referred to as miner’s lettuce. The name comes from the 1849 gold rush of California where claytonia was used as fresh salad greens.

Here is how you can add claytonia, this tasty salad green, to your home vegetable garden.

Like most other vegetables claytonia prefers a neutral soil pH. Test your soil and adjust accordingly to a pH level of 6.5 to 7.0. You can pick a pH soil testing kit at any home or garden center for a few bucks.

Claytonia likes a cool environment. The seeds are best when planted in soil where the temperature is fifty to fifty-five degrees Fahrenheit, although can with stand up to sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit, which makes claytonia the perfect fall, winter and early spring vegetable for the backyard.

Sow the seeds to a depth no deeper than 1/4″. The seeds are fairly small and planting them too deep will make it difficult if not impossible for them to push through the top soil.

Give your claytonia the opportunity to grow and thrive by spacing them out at eight inches apart. This gives the roots a chance to grow deep and spread out without having to compete for nutrients from a neighboring claytonia.

Claytonia requires full sun, but can also grow in partial shade. Give your claytonia a moderate to even watering, and if you are growing it in a cold frame over the winter months, reduce it to a light watering.

As soon as the leaves are of an edible size you can begin to harvest them. Simply cut the leaves off. The plant will continue to grow and produce. If you forget to pick some of the leaves a flower will eventually form. Do not worry as the flower is also edible and makes a nice addition to a salad as well.

Other salad greens make for good companions to claytonia there are no listed bad companion plants, but you should avoid crop rotation with radicchio, endive, escarole and artichokes.

Cleaning a Soft Dog Crate

Published

By

If you have a soft dog crate that your pooch uses with any frequency, then eventually it is going to need some cleaning. Soft dog crates can be something of a hassle to clean, because it can be difficult to access the insides of them without actually crawling inside. This article will attempt to provide a few tips on keeping your dog’s soft crate clean with as little hassle or stress as possible.

Firstly, it is vital to realize that if your dog uses its crate often, then you are going to have to clean it often. Every time your pup has an accident inside its soft crate, it is necessary for its health that you remove your dog from the crate, and clean out the mess.

For potty accidents, simply remove or absorb as much of the material as possible from the inside of the soft dog crate. Then apply an animal-safe cleansing solution, such as Nature’s Miracle, to the location and allow it to disinfect the area. Then fully wipe away the cleaning solution.

For routine cleaning, first be sure your dog is out of the crate! Then, remove all of your pup’s toys and blankets. Wash the toys and blankets in a washing machine, if possible. Then, for the soft crate itself, use a wash cloth and a gentle, non-toxic cleaning solution. Wipe down all of the floors, side walls, and roof of the crate. Be sure not to leave behind any cleaning solution residue before you return your pooch back to its crate.

As always, the more often you clean your pup’s soft crate the easier the occasion will be. Just set aside a little time, and have some patience, and the cleaning process won’t be nearly as bad as some people fear it will.
