5 Real Ways to Make Money Online

Published

on

This has always been a great question, and there are many different schools of thought on this subject.

A person could argue products like software, eBooks, and virtual information are amongst the most marketable as they are easy to duplicate and have no shipping costs. It’s true a virtual product can absolutely simplify your post-sale process, however are they truly the best overall product strategy? In my opinion it all comes down to the demand, then the numbers. Calculate what price you can create or retain a product for and then calculate what price you can sell it for while keeping in mind advertising, shipping, and other expenses that fall between those two processes.

Determine your total costs from start to finish. I wouldn’t even consider selling a product or service that fetches me any less than 80 percent gross profit per unit, unless it had a great backend or up-sell strategy or some type of recurring subscription based profit model.

lf you find that managing inventory or working with suppliers and drop shippers is more slanted towards your personal experience then work with a product that feels comfortable with you, you will benefit from the familiarity. The importance of comfort might just be the most influential factor for me when choosing a product to wrap around your marketing. Many people want to sell online but have no idea what products to sell. In my experience selling something for profit alone with no personal passion can be a mistake and I have found that building an email list for marketing and growing your brand is a cheap effective way to get started quickly.

5 Products you can sell and make money using “email marketing”.

  1. Digital products and virtual services. Digital products are easy to duplicate, store, and ship digitally via email or file sharing service.
  2. Affiliate marketing programs. Many companies online look for enthusiastic individuals to resell their products or services. Scrolling to the footer of a business’s website will typically link to any affiliate program if offered. You can also search for specific affiliate programs that suit your needs.
  3. Trendy products that are in demand. Great way to let product buzz and word of mouth help your cause. The Google Trends tool will show you the current trends of your product ideas based on total search volumes. This can be a great way to determine what’s currently popular.
  4. Start your own business. Get creative and bring your ideas online with a website or product page selling your creations, products or services. Accepting payments is easy these days with services like PayPal and all you need to do is promote your website using email marketing.
  5. Freelance writing services, or create a blog. Writing can be an interesting and rewarding way to make money online. You can publish and sell eBooks, blog posts can generate revenue from ads or affiliate links, sponsors, or you can write about your current products for sale.

When sending email in large volumes always be sure you choose a true high volume, web-based email marketing software that can grow with your ongoing success.

How To Play 16×16 Sudoku Puzzles

Published

on

By

Through the years, Sudoku has become so popular a game that many variants have sprung from its original 9×9 grid puzzle. From the classic 9×9 grid puzzle, the 16×16 Sudoku puzzle was inspired. This made playing Sudoku more challenging for those who take time to complete it. Although both the 16×16 and 9×9 Sudoku puzzles have game rules that are quite identical to each other, we can still find little differences between them. Let us take a closer look at the ways on how to play this particular Sudoku puzzle variant and how it differs from the classic 9×9 grid Sudoku puzzle.

In terms of rules, there is not much difference between the classic 9×9 Sudoku puzzle and the 16×16 grid puzzle. You still have to see to it that no number should appear more than once on every row, column, and sub-square. Thus, in a 16×16 puzzle, the numbers 1 to 16 should be written and placed only once on each of those said places.

As you may have already noticed by now, the main difference between the two is their grid sizes. The 16×16 grid puzzle has, obviously, a larger grid size compared to the classic 9×9 Sudoku grid. Because of this, completing a 16×16 puzzle may take a longer period of time than when you try to complete the 9×9 one. The larger the grid size, the more numbers you will have to place into their corresponding blank boxes.

Although completing a 16×16 grid puzzle may be slightly harder than the 9×9 puzzle, you can still be able to successfully complete it with the right strategies and, of course, by using logic. You must also keep in mind that what makes a Sudoku puzzle hard to complete is its difficulty level, which depends on how the prearranged numbers are being placed and not by the size of its grid. This puzzle game is not a guessing game, and the only way to get the right answers to this puzzle is by getting your brain work by exercising your logical skills.

It is also very important to be thorough both in answering and checking whether you have placed the right numbers to those empty boxes. In addition to that, try your best to keep your focus and watch out for those repeated numbers. Do not forget to check every corner of that puzzle. Check and double-check every row, every column, and every sub-square on that 16×16 grid. Making sure that you have placed the right numbers into the right boxes by double-checking really pays off in the end.

This particular Sudoku variant can be found in the internet or printed on Sudoku pads. Whichever form you would want, just remember those basic Sudoku rules and guidelines and play the game with logic and patience because you can never successfully complete a Sudoku puzzle without them. With these at hand, you will surely be able to successfully complete it. You should not miss trying to complete the 16×16 Sudoku puzzle for it can give you the mental stimulation and challenge that you so badly need.

Gymnastics Grips – Care and Tips

Published

on

By

First things first, when you get new gymnastics hand grips you must break them in before you jump up on the uneven bars and attempt your hard skills and tricks. Some grips are harder to break in than others do to the thickness and stiffness of the leather. There are several different ways to break grips in. First, when your gymnastics grips are not in use, roll them as if they were around the bar. This will allow them to take the shape of the gymnastics bar. Second, put the grips on, mount the bars and do simple skills only. That way you will have a much less chance of peeling off. My advice would be to stay on the low gymnastics bar only until you get use to them.

When you first put gymnastics grips on, the finger holes are always too tight. DO NOT cut the finger holes or force the holes wider by stretching them to try to make them fit. This will only make your grips un-wearable, and you would have to cough up more money to buy another new pair. All you have to do is roll up a little piece of sand paper and sand the inside of the holes until they fit snugly. Another tip, do not let other girls wear your gymnastics grips. It can stretch the finger holes out were you can no longer wear your new grips without them slipping around.

Once you get your grips broke in and wear them on a regular basis they may start to get slick. This is due to the leather wearing down from each skill performed on the gymnastics uneven bars. To get them rough again you take a wire grip brush and brush the grips up and down until it starts to get rough again. You can keep doing this every time they get slick. Once they get too thin, you will need a new pair.

Many gymnasts store their gymnastics grips in bags. These bags are called grip bags. If you place your gymnastics grips in a grip bag after every bar rotation it will eliminate the amount of chalk that will get all over. Plus carrying your grip bag to the gymnastics bars and back is much easier then caring your gym bag around!

By

Guitar playing is an art and not everyone is a gifted guitarist. This article is devoted to all those guitar lovers who have at some point of their life or the other, experienced a deep desire to learn playing guitar. Well, guitar learning is not as difficult as people say it is. At least with the DVD series of the Learn and Master Guitar program, the challenging task of learning to play the guitar becomes much more easy and uncomplicated.

This program has such a wide range of guitar concepts, techniques and styles to teach, that any person who follows this program is sure to learn the guitar quite fluently, confidently, flawlessly and with a reasonably high degree of versatility within a few months of starting with this program. This best part about this program is that apart from the rich knowledge that it provides through the video lessons, it also provides an unlimited amount of practical tips, which add a lot of life to your guitar playing skills, in addition to making guitar playing very effortless and simple for you.

The instructor, Steve Krenz is a very experienced guitarist, an accomplished musician and a widely acclaimed guitar teacher. He seems to know what piece of advice or what tip to provide at the exact moment when it is needed. It is as if he can read you mind and can understand your requirement completely. Here are a few tips and suggestions from Steve, that are very simple and yet without them, you would be missing out on a lot of perfection and pleasure of playing the guitar.

Guitar Tips and Guitar Tricks

Very often, beginners complain that playing the guitar hurts their fingers. Steve suggests exercises for improving finger agility and strength in the initial part of this instructional program itself, so that nobody quits learning because of this problem. He clarifies that the problem can be solved through regular practice, which encourages callus building, when the finger tips press down hard on the strings. He also points out that barring a chord is very helpful for callus building and also improves finger strength and dexterity.

In addition to introducing you to the world of chords, chord families, chord progressions, chord formulas, smooth chord transitions, chord substitution, advanced chords and altered chords, Steve also equips you with several tips pertaining to chords. He tells you to teach yourself as many different ways of playing a chord as possible, because it adds greater flexibility during cord changing and is also going to be useful when you try to compose your own music. According to him, you should carry the guitar with you and practice playing chords as frequently as possible, while watching TV or talking to a friend, as this will refrain you from looking at the guitar and playing each not. As you continue with this practice, your fingers will get used to playing fluently and with greater confidence, even if you do not look constantly look at the fretboard each time you strike a note.

This program provides many such useful tips, which we can very well do without, but whose implementation can add an element of grace and perfection to your guitar playing skills. This program provides you with such a large variety of free guitar licks and songs that you can practice as often as you like. It helps polish your guitar playing skills and takes your guitar learning process to an entirely different level, wherein you know how to apply what you have learnt. Therefore, irrespective of whether you are a born guitarist or not, you can soon start playing the guitar like any of the professional guitarists.

Gymnastic Leotards: Historic Facts

Published

on

By

It goes without saying that every kind of sport requires specific apparel. The unique outfit is necessary for the athlete’s comfort, attractiveness and hence best performance. The sportswear uniforms have been changing throughout the centuries, developing innovative tailoring as well as involving new fabrics and design. In this brief post we would like to look at interesting facts and the history of a gymnastics leotard.

This may seem funny, yet the initial gymnastic apparel was created by a man. The skin tight garment which is now used mainly by girls is named after a French acrobat Jules Léotard, who popularized the garment. Being a pioneer of the artistic gymnastics and one of the most famous acrobats of his time, Jules was looking for an impeccable outfit for his performances which should be perfect in all aspects. Eventually he tailored the first maillot (the original name of the garment) for himself in 1859. It allowed him to perform sophisticated tricks flawlessly, simultaneously exhibiting his well developed muscles to the audience. So, the contemporary gymnastic leotards for girls root back to the nineteenth century.

Although the revolutionary garment was initially created for acrobats, soon it has become very popular with other athletes. Unisex leotards were worn by dancers, gymnasts, wrestlers, cyclists etc. In a few decades the garment penetrated the casual wear market and appeared in the form of bathing suits and exercise outfits (1930’s and 1950’s respectively). By the late 1970’s this functional apparel has become a vivid symbol of a disco and aerobics craze of the time. Newly invented spandex and nylon on a par with traditional cotton have offered a wide variety of styles and cuts of leos.

Gymnastics Uniform Today

Undoubtedly, leotards are very practical and functional as swimsuits and exercise garments, although they are the most beneficial for gymnastics. They fit perfectly and bring a feeling of a second skin, since gymnastics requires an ultimate concentration. Loose pants, rubbing seams and other distractions can lead to mistakes and thus severe injuries. The perfectly fitting gymnastics apparel will never distract an athlete, but bring a complete sense of convenience and safety. Such a kind of uniform also winningly displays the perfect muscles, especially in artistic gymnastics.

You will find a wide array of gymnastic apparel available in the sportswear market today. They can be both sleeveless or feature long/short/enlarged sleeves depending on their usage. Leos can be made of different fabrics and may have no seams at all. There also exist simple modest workout outfits and those manufactured (very often handmade) for competitive purposes. The latter usually incorporate vivid decorative elements, tinsel, fringes and other kinds of fancy embellishments. Depending on the purpose of the garment the price can vary. As a rule, high quality leos are very expensive (even those for little girls), especially the competition outfits. However, you can always make use of one of the reliable online shops offering a great range of gymnastic leos for girls of all ages for reasonable prices.

10 Top Tips For Upgrading Your Evo I-III-DSM

Published

on

By

Like many, you probably thought that once you bought your early Evo/DSM that it would be the end of money spent on it. Sure, maintenance would have to be done but the car was pretty quick from the off and you surely wouldn’t want it to go quicker. And then you upgrade one part and you can feel the difference it makes. Your mindset then changes to one of “I’ll just get this one upgrade, and then I’ll be happy with the power/handling” and before you realize it, you’ve spent the GDP of a small country on the car.

But there are a multitude of upgrades available and knowing what to choose can sometimes be a daunting prospect. I’d like to think I have done pretty well with my car (a mid 11s car in the 1/4 mile and full daily driver) and so wanted to give you my top 10 tips for upgrading your Evo I-III/DSM.

  1. Have a plan. Before you make any real upgrades you should decide what you want out of the car and therefore the areas you need to look at. For example, a car made purely for drag racing is going to have different requirements for power and handling to a car made for touge or gymkhana. A lot of people just throw money at the car trying to buy every upgrade they can. While this car give you a nice looking car which performs well, it might be a jack-of-all trades and master of none. At this time, also determine if the car will also be a daily driver or whether it will be a weekend/race car only. If the latter then you’ll be able to strip out the interior to save weight, but you’ll be losing a lot of home comforts.
  2. Maintenance. Upgrading your car usually means pushing stock components past their normal operating limits. In order to keep reliability high you’ll want to make sure a full service is done for the car (including timing belt change, if not done in the past 5 years, and balancer belt if you still have balance shafts). Also, do a full fluid change for the car, which means engine oil, gearbox oil, transfer box and rear diff, brake fluid, clutch fluid and coolant. That means everything is fresh and you know what time your service intervals start at. I will talk about service intervals for your car in a future post.
  3. Get some air in your lungs. One of the first things you should look to do is change the restrictive air filter that your stock Evo is equipped with. A lot of people will go for the HKS Super Power Flow Induction Kit, and indeed I did have that on my car for around 18 months. However, the foam filters do get dirty easily and the cleaning qualities of the HKS filter is not good, as shown by this set of reviews. Plus I have read of the foam filters getting sucked into the turbos of some cars (not an issue with the standard MAF on the Evos but still something to consider). I currently have the Apexi Power Intake and can highly recommend it. Its filtering is excellent, offers a very nice increase in low and mid-range power, and does not have to be replaced unlike the foam elements in the HKS kit. It costs a little more but works out cheaper after around a year of use. The Apexi filter also comes with a nice heat shield to keep some of the engine bay heat (which does get pretty high in a bay containing a 4G63 engine) away from the intake.
  4. Adding fuel to the fire. A car needs 2 basic things to function: oxygen and fuel. We have helped the former immensely by getting a new air filter (and possibly intake pipe), but a steady supply of fuel is vital to keep the engine performing when you put the foot down. A Walbro 255l/hr fuel pump is a very popular upgrade, and with good reason as it will support the power requirements for all but the most potent Evos. Do be wary when you get the Walbro though, and especially if you buy from Ebay. There are quite a few Chinese knock-off Walbros being sold as genuine at the moment, and fuelling is something you do not want to sacrifice on just to save a few pennies. The last thing you want is the fuel pump packing up just as you’re flying down the drag strip, starving your engine of fuel and potentially causing serious damage. One thing to be aware of though is that the new fuel pump (especially with a “fuel pump rewire) can cause too much fuel to flow through and it might overrun the stock fuel pressure regulator. I can highly recommend a Sard fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure meter. The Sard can handle the most pressure and is the best performing of the bunch, and will ensure just enough fuel gets to the engine.
  5. Power is nothing without control. “What are you talking about brakes for? I just want to go fast!” is a common phrase from people who are starting out on the upgrade path, but is something that needs addressing. After all, it is more important to be able to stop when you need to than to be able to go. The Evos brakes are not too bad to start with, although on a circuit they will experience brake fade pretty quickly. Put in some DOT 4 brake fluid, along with a set of decent brake pads (I use Project Mu B-Spec pads front and rear) and your driving will feel much more assured. If you want to go one step further then look at a set of braided brake lines (HEL and Goodridge seem to have the best deals for the Evo I-III) and a Cusco Brake Stopper and you’ll be more confident, meaning later braking into the corners and a much safer drive.
  6. Show your support. Support and stability for the car are vital when you start upgrading, very much so when you are planning to throw the car around the corners but even for straightline drag racing too. Tower strut bars can be picked up relatively cheaply and you should get front and rear, upper and lower if you have the budget for it. They stiffen the chassis up and once again will have you cornering with confidence.
  7. Extreme logging. Am sure you’re getting frustrated and want to get to the bits that will make us go faster, but bear with me. My tips are done in this way for a reason. One of the reasons I have had relative success with my tuning and upgrades so far is that everything has been done in a balanced way, with close monitoring of my car’s health. Boost and oil pressure gauges are pretty much a must at this point, and a wideband will help you in the future as you increase the boost and start tuning. Alongside the standard gauges though you should really consider a datalogging device. The best one I have seen for the early Evo is Pocketlogger, and it can be combined with a dirt cheap but compatible PDA from eBay. This little device plugs into your car’s OBDI diagnostic port and is able to log a number of variables, from rpm to ignition timing to the all important engine knock levels. You can then view these logs on the PDA itself or download to your PC and analyse them there. This provides an invaluable tool for monitoring your engine’s health as you do any testing.
  8. Breathe in… breathe out. What goes into your car must go out, and old adage is certainly true when we talk about gases. The stock Evo exhaust system can be a little restrictive and money spent on a cat-back exhaust system (that is, one running from the catalytic converter back to the muffler) will result in a much more powerful sound coming from your car as well as an increase in performance. I would go one step further and recommend that, if you can, you should replace the catalytic converter with a straight pipe, which is exactly what it sounds like. I should note though that this modification may be illegal in your country, and I would recommend checking with the local authorities before removing the catalytic converter. It could also cause you to fail the emissions test in your country.
  9. Boooooooooooost! Yes, we’re almost at the point where we can turn up the boost. But how do you do it? The answer is a boost controller. There are 2 main types of boost controller, a simple manual controller or a more complex electronic boost controller. The former are cheaper and have a strong following in the DSM community, where the Hallman Boost Controller gets some excellent reviews. I opted for the extra features of the Blitz Dual SBC Spec S boost controller and haven’t looked back. Four different boost settings, a boost warning if it gets too high, and very accurate control of your boost has made it a no-brainer for me. The Spec S is also reasonably priced and is currently holding around 1.6bar of boost on my car without any problems.
  10. Baby steps. Now is the moment you’ve been waiting for. You’ll be able to increase the boost from the stock 0.7bar levels to around 0.8 or 0.9 bar and, providing your gauges and logger are not showing up any big problems, should be feeling a much quicker car. But take things very slowly and don’t assume because you had no problems going to 0.9bar that you can immediately crank up the boost to 1.9 bar as things don’t work like that. Keep things conservative, especially if the car is a daily driver. You should be aiming for zero knock.

Obviously, this is an initial guide and I haven’t even started to talk about fuel controllers, blow off valves, standalone engine management systems etc. But hopefully it’s given you a thing or two to think about. Do you have any more tips you’d offer people starting on the road to tuning nirvana?

Direct Response Copywriter Tricks of the Trade

Published

on

By

Direct response copywriters won’t always tell you what I’m about to tell you…

We know direct response copywriters have more in common with salespeople than with writers of literature… since it’s the job of direct response copywriters to sell products and services rather than to entertain or provide dramatic satisfaction for readers. They differ greatly from agency copywriters, too, whose job is to sound clever.

Nonetheless, there is a “creative” dimension to direct response copywriting that’s not often discussed.

Take a look at some of the great direct response copywriters such as John Carlton and Dan Kennedy, for instance. There’s a strong literary component to their writing, with compelling characters… a rollicking story… and style.

These copywriters, like novelists, create a whole world for their readers. And they immerse readers in that world, take them by the hand, and lead them where they want them to go.

Novelists lead their readers to dramatic tensions and satisfactions; copywriters lead their readers to solutions to their problems… a new land where their lives are better and their futures brighter–if only they buy the product!

This immersive, literary element in DR copywriting is crucial to “getting” this kind of writing. And just as almost any story is embellished for effect, so too are DR ads.

Let’s say I told you I received these copywriting strategies from a secret DR copywriting “wizard” who went into hiding to avoid public exposure. That would affect you a lot more than if I told you I learned this stuff from a retired DR copywriter, wouldn’t it?

Do you see the difference? I’m essentially saying the same thing, except I’ve transformed a boring fact into an extraordinary, almost mystical one.

So it’s the story behind what you’re selling that really creates the impact and makes for epic copywriting.

Great copywriters don’t have to lie, because they’re creative enough to “dress up” the facts to make them appear otherworldly and alluring.

Another thing to realize is that great copywriters create great characters… characters readers empathize with because they share the same problem or situation. These characters once experienced the same problem readers are going through but managed to escape or defeat that problem… typically because they used the product or service offered.

Here’s the deal: DR copywriting often has a strong literary, creative component. Many great DR copywriters have studied literature or even write it themselves.

Is it absolutely essential to writing good DR copy? No. But studying literature and storytelling will take your DR copy to the next level, I promise you.

Sudoku Snake – Generate, Design and Solve Unlimited Sudokus

Published

on

By

Over two years ago, when I was challenged by my dad to write a sudoku program, I never could have imagined what this program would turn into. Initially it was just to be a program to find the solution to any puzzle. Now it is more… so much more.

The ability to print puzzles to paper is just the latest out of so many features that have been added to what now is called ‘Sudoku Snake.’ Hints, Cheats, Saving, Pasting, Anaysis, Equivalency Checking, and even a button that will fill in all the little numbers for you so you don’t have to take forever writing them all in one at a time, these just name a few.

I designed this program (using C++) for myself, to be everything I ever wanted in a Sudoku Program. I wanted flexibility with an easy system to enter numbers. I wanted the possible solutions to change every time I put in a number so I could see how the solution was developing as I designed the puzzle. I wanted it to be able to solve any puzzle on earth (which it can in milliseconds), and give an accurate rating for every puzzle. To give an accurate rating Sudoku Snake now uses more than 40 different solving techniques of progressing difficulty, each with a certain score associated. I’ve tested the rating system by trying to solve the same puzzles by hand, and I tell you it is more accurate than any newspaper or magazine rating you will ever find.

Since the program was initially designed to just design and analyze puzzles, it required some creative working to implement an interface to help the user try to solve the puzzle himself. Thus Solve Mode was born. Switching between design and solve mode the user can first create a puzzle (with the computer solving and analyzing it), then solve it separately (with the computer giving hints and solving tools, such as button that color in the squares)

I thought of everything I might ever want a helper program to do for me. For instance, if I’m solving a puzzle by hand, and I’m stuck and want the answer to just one single cell. If I look in the back of the book I risk seeing the answer to a lot more than one, so I included the capability to look at the answer to just one cell without ever seeing any other. Solve Mode allows two types of hints to help you when you’re stuck. It can either tell you what the next easiest solving technique is (without showing where so you can try to find it yourself), or it will highlight where the next easiest solving technique is (without saying what it is, in case you want to try to figure out the logic yourself). Of course you can also do both.

Gymnastic Tumbling Techniques for Low Gravity Games and Contests Considered

Published

on

By

Humans love to play sports and compete in games of agility, strength, courage, and skill. Perhaps that is why gymnastics is not only so fun to watch, but it also attracts the most competitive humans to participate in the sport. Now then, I am here to tell you that someday gymnastics will be a sport for our future human space colonies. There will be competitions on the Moon, Mars, Europa, and Titan. Gymnastics will be performed in orbiting space stations, space hotels for exhibition matches, and The International Federation of Space Olympics (IFSO) will host gymnastics in the future.

Of course, the gymnastic Tumbling Techniques for low gravity games and tournaments will be completely out of this world. Consider if you will the ability to tumble with a gravity that is one-third that on Earth, or even the one-fifth that of the Earth’s gravity? Yes I am talking about the Moon and Mars. The grappling techniques and tumbling strategies will be fast paced, dynamic, and ultra-fun to watch. Also a good amount of fear will be taken away giving the gymnast the self-confidence to try new things, tricks which have never been performed in the history of humankind.

Consider the parallel bars, and the uneven bars at one third the gravity. Are you beginning to see what is possible. And even those who are not of 10% body fat or the Olympic conditioned athlete can also participate. Perhaps there will be gymnastic camps on the moon to help gymnasts hone their skills, and create new tricks. Yes, it appears that gymnastics will survive the human endeavor as this species boldly goes where they’ve never previously been.

Not only will it be an incredible sport to perform, it will also be incredible to watch. It will certainly draw crowds, spectators who watch what people have only dreamed of being able to do. Super agility, in a low gravity environment will become the fascination of the space colony. Not only that, but the gymnast will know that if they make a mistake they will not pay for it with a broken wrist, or a severe sprain. Of all the sports I expect to survive in space colonies, gymnastics is at the top of the list, and for good reason.

If you are gymnast, and if this line of discussion intrigues you, or if you have any comments, questions, case studies, or concerns, I’d certainly like to hear from you. Please shoot me an e-mail so we can discuss this at your earliest possible convenience.

Classic Metal and Hard Rock – The Best Shock Rock Bands

Published

on

By

-In no particular order

Arthur Brown – Burning Helmet

It’s safe to say that for once Alice Cooper borrowed some ideas from somebody else; case in point, Arthur Brown. Arthur Bown is most well known for the single “Fire” which is vindictive of the Arthur Brown experience. Brown extensively used fire to cause a stir in the audience while the whole band resembled some kind of medieval satanic cult. Brown himself was one of the first to use face paint/makeup to create a stage persona along with the music. His incendiary stage act was so controversial that he was even kicked off a tour with Jimi Hendrix. On one tour Brown descended on the stage wearing a suit and helmet welded from sheet metal that was doused in lighter fluid and set a flame. The band never saw huge success because of an unstable line-up and was therefore unable to gain the notoriety they deserve in the Rock world.

Motley Crue (Early Years 81-85)- Nikki Lights his legs on fire

What most people aren’t aware of when it comes to Motley Crue is the fact that they pretty much started as a shock rock band. Other than being the kings of 80’s rock and metal, Motley Crue started off with elaborate stage antics inspired by Kiss and Alice. During The Too Fast for Love era live performances The Crue aimed to shock and entertain the audience with Fire, Blood, Crazy Hair, ‘Scary’ Makeup, and outrageous outfits.

Nikki Sixx adopted the technique (from Blackie Lawless) of setting his leather pants and boots on fire during live performances which can be seen in the “Live wire” video. Also in “Live Wire”, the Kiss inspired blood dripping from the mouth technique is used by Mr Mars. Crazy thigh high boots, leather and studs, pale-face makeup, and larger-than-life hair were all used to initially shock audiences with such an extreme and wild image. Motley also experimented with the controversy of satanic symbols, not to mention pushing violent and sexual lyrics and imagery into the forefront. Perhaps Motley Crue are not usually paired with other shock rock acts because outrageous androgyny in 81-84 became the norm for the rest of the 80’s with the arrival of other Hair Metal acts. As well, the Crue toned down their image by 87. There always was a fine line between Shock Rock and Glam.

W.A.S.P. – Torture Rack

WASP, just like Motley Crue came from the sunset strip glam metal movement. Considering the fact the members of WASP and Crue played together in a band at some point (Sister), it comes as no surprise to see the similarities of these two bands in their early days. WASP is of course synonymous with the shock rock genre. They mixed Alice Cooper’s horror show with aggressive but catchy heavy metal tunes. Blackie is known for using raw meat in his performance and throwing it into the audience, as well as eating live worms on stage (although this was before WASP), dangerous fire use, and blood to get a reaction out of the audience.

WASP’s most well known ‘gimmick’ was the use of the torture rack in which they hung a naked woman and proceeded to mutilate her body (all showmanship of course). Randy Piper borrows some ideas from Ace Frehley’s bag of tricks with his smoking guitar. Stage antics considered, WASP got much of their shock rock credit from the PMRC’s filthy fifteen with the violent and sexual lyrics/image in songs such as Animal (Fuck Like A Beast).

Other techniques include: Chainsaw cod piece, pyro, and exploding cod piece (fireworks)

Alice Cooper – Beheading Himself

Credited as the godfather of Shock Rock, Alice Cooper was every parent’s worst nightmare in the 60’s and 70’s. Alice Cooper is a full on Macbeth Rock and Roll play. He coined pretty much every technique that has ever been used by any Shock Rock acts to follow. Snakes, makeup, guillotines, nooses, blood, thigh high boots, straight-jackets, etc… Alice Cooper explored the fears of Americans by experimenting with imagery and lyrics. Alice’s is one of the first to make concept albums. His lyrics ranged from tales inspiring youth rebellion to the clinically insane.

Alice Cooper’s wild stage shows inspired gossip and fear to spread among conservative America. One of the most prominent incidents during a live performance was the fiasco of a live chicken being ripped to shreds by a hostile Toronto crowd. Newspapers and media empowered the eerie Alice Cooper aura with reports of Alice beheading himself night after night. Alice Cooper is a combination of Bloody Tragedies, Houdini, and Rock and Roll.

Lizzy Borden

Here is another shock rock band that was yet again influenced by Kiss and Alice Cooper. The band’s name is inspired from a woman accused and acquitted of murder in the 19th century. Clearly borrowing from Alice Cooper, the lead singer is also named Lizzy Borden. The band’s music was pure metal influenced from bands such as Maiden (especially vocally), Sabbath, Priest, Kiss, and Alice Cooper. They are most well known for their video “Me Against The World” which showcases their outrageous glam androgyny used to shock audiences. In the early days they borrowed many tricks from Alice Cooper lyrically and visually including hacking up a woman on stage with an axe. In the 80s Lizzy Borden was an example of a heavier Glam metal band that garnered a huge underground following.

Kiss – Gene Simmons breathing Fire

Kiss is recognized as another pioneer in the Shock Rock genre. Alice Cooper was yet another influence on Kiss very early on. Kiss started as a Glam Rock band but after seeing Alice Cooper decided they would have 4 Alice Cooper’s on stage and drastically changed their image. Of course we are all well aware of Gene Simmons breathing fire and spitting blood. Kiss became one of the major targets of religious and parental organizations as well as influencing decades of bands to follow. Their stage show is constantly cited as one of the biggest around and Kiss is considered entertainment both musically and visually. Ace Frehley plays guitar with smoke spewing from his pickups, while Gene Simmons flies to the highest peak in an arena (with wires of course).

Their face paint and outfits are synonymous with Hard Rock and Heavy Metal style. Although their antics may seem more like pure entertainment versus shock value it’s important to consider the impact they had in the 70’s. The make-up never came off till the 80’s so Kiss surrounded themselves with controversy and mysticism that garnered the band even more attention. The band caused a stir with their sexual lyrics and their logo was accused of being racist (The SS in the word Kiss looked similar to the Nazi SS symbol). Like most/all shock rock bands, presently, Kiss’ antics are more just a simple form of entertainment and hardly shock most audiences but they continue to thrive due to great music.

King Diamond

King Diamond is Gene Simmons’ Demon meets Alice Cooper. Originating from Denmark, the band came to prominence in the 80’s with their blend of Heavy Metal Riffing and ghostly falsetto vocals. Diamond created a satanic stage persona in the vein of previous shock rock pioneers but unlike the rest was not using Satanism only for shock value. Diamond follows LaVeyan Satanism which he considers more of a philosophy than a religion.
