Common Sewer Cleaning Equipment

Sewer cleaning is something that does not happen often but when it does, it means that there is usually some sort of clog in the drains or the pipes. The service is something that is done by drain and sewer cleaning professionals who may be plumbers as well as cleaners. This does not necessarily mean, however, that all workers who clean are plumbers. There are many different tools and equipments that these professionals use and many of these come in residential and commercial versions.

This is one of the more common solutions to a clogged drain or toilet. A plunger is used for both residential and commercial toilets to ease congestion. This sewer cleaning equipment is handy to have at the home as well in any office building. It is small instrument with a wooden handle.

The business end is made out of rubber and is plunged into the toilet and pushed to create a “blast” of pressure that usually pushes whatever may be clogging it. This tool is the most basic and one of the least expensive that is used to resolve any form of stoppages in pipes or drains. If this cannot solve the problem than other equipment might do the trick. There is a different kind of tool that also operates on a similar idea.

A hose is attached to special equipment that supplies a blast of air through it to the cause of the clog and pushes it out. The hose needs to be placed into the drain (preferably with a slim fit to be able to handle the blast of air well) and the container of the air is attached to the other end.

Snakes and Augers

These instruments are very versatile tools that are also used for sewer cleaning to clear up stoppages and clogging that may have happened in sinks, drains and pipes. They work by being put down a drain or a sink with the provision that they can be extended to a certain length. These are made up of sturdy but flexible cables that have specific lengths, usually up to about several feet. Sewer cleaning is made easier with the general use of these snakes and augers because even without any stoppages or clogging, they can clear potential blockages. There are also some shorter versions of this type of sewer cleaning equipment that are connected to a drill.

The premise is that the drill makes the cable or wire spin sufficiently enough to catch hold of any debris which may be the cause of the blockage and take it out. In many cases, hair is the primary debris that causes stoppages. Heavy duty versions of these snakes and augers come with pneumatic power which are used to service larger drains, pipes and other sewage inlets or ports. It is important that the cable used for these equipment fit well enough the drains and pipes in order not to miss any debris or blockages in them.

These are just a few of the more basic equipment used to help with sewer cleaning problems and services. In most cases, they are the first line of resolution that professional cleaners use for many problems.

How to Clean Different Types of Flooring in Your Home

Confused about which cleaning method is best for you floor? Some cleaning solutions can work wonders on one kind of floor and wreak havoc on another. We thought we’d make it that little bit easier. So whatever your floor type, check out our top tips on how to keep them ship-shape.

Carpets and Tiles

Regular vacuuming is essential for carpets, as it prevents loose dirt and grit from working into the carpet pile where it will damage the fibres. Upright vacuum cleaners are best, especially those with revolving brushes to dislodge embedded dirt. Use the suction head for loop-pile carpets, as beater brushes and heads can cause the carpet to bobble. Manufacturers recommend an annual steam clean. Clean according to wear. Whether you do it yourself or call in the professionals, high-traffic areas should be cleaned once every two years.

Natural remedy

Remove wine or grease stains from carpet by lightly sprinkling area with baking soda. Dab it up and add a little more if necessary. Leave on until the wine is absorbed, then vacuum up any residue left.

Natural Flooring

All good quality natural floorcoverings should have a substantial latex back to prevent dust and debris falling through and ensure easy maintenance by vacuuming. A cylinder-type vacuum cleaner without brushes is the best choice for natural floorings to avoid damaging the fibres.

Most high quality natural floorings are sold with a stain inhibitor that protects them from dirt and prolongs there life, so ask your supplier for details of cleaning products for natural fibres. These should be used on stains immediately – not once the stain has been absorbed. Mop up with a clean cloth or kitchen paper. Don’t use carpet mousse or shampoo as these can cause natural floorings to shrink.

Consider hiring a professional cleaning company if you want to give your flooring a thorough clean, but make sure they use a dry-cleaning system as opposed to a wet on. Ask your retailer to recommend a firm

Wooden Flooring

Sweep wooden floors regularly, or use a vacuum cleaner with a brush setting. Mop once a week or so with a well-wrung mop, using soapy cleaner specifically for use on wood. Don’t saturate the floor or allow water to stand on it as this can cause damage. Wet-clean waxed boards sparingly and wax polish them to improve the patina. Dirty wax build-up should be removed with white spirit and the boards re-waxed. Treat engineered boards with oil or lacquer reviver, applied with a soft cloth.

Natural remedies

Remove scuff marks from wooden floors by rubbing them gently with a pencil eraser.

Bring out the natural colour of your wood flooring by wiping the surface with lemon oil and a dry cloth. However, this only applies to natural and waxed flooring, not varnished floors.

Laminate flooring

Laminate should be swept or vacuumed regularly. Using a damp cloth is fine, but never soak the floor with water – they’re designed to be water resistant. Most spills on laminate can be removed with household cleaners but, if the stain is lipstick, ink or permanent marker, try acetone. Never use scouring pads to remove stains on laminate flooring, and remove any liquid stains from the floor as soon as possible.

How to clean tiles and stone flooring

Stone floors

Stone will often have been treated before it left the factory. If not, it will stain easily so it’s important to seal it with a proprietary sealant or, for terracotta and slate, use linseed oil. Once sealed, clean it with a mix of mild detergent and water. However, it will need re-sealing at regular intervals to keep it looking its best.

Immediately wipe away any acidic spills.

Reconstituted stone needs to be sealed with a stain inhibitor then impregnated with a top coat of water-based sealant. It’ll need re-sealing every two years. Ask your manufacturer or suppler for specific care advice and suitable products.

Ceramic tiles

Ceramic tiles can be cleaned with a mild detergent and water solution and do not require sealing. Damp-mop your ceramic tile with a standard, all-purpose cleaner. Dry the floor with a soft cloth to avoid streaks.

Never use harsh abrasive cleaners that might scratch the glaze.

Flagstone, limestone, slate

Damp-mop flagstone or slate floors using either clear water, an all-purpose cleaning solution in warm water, or water to which fabric softener has been added. Wring the mop until it doesn’t drip, and apply it to the floor in slow, even strokes. Ask the manufacturer for recommend the appropriate cleaning product.

Wipe up spills on unglazed floors immediately or they might cause a stain.

Remove stubborn marks with white spirit, but always do a spot test first.

Flexible flooring

Vinyls, linoleums and rubber are hard wearing and easy to care for. The amount of cleaning and maintenance depends both on your lifestyle and the colour of the floor. Vacuum or brush regularly to remove dust and grit that might lead to your floor being scratched, and follow with a weekly wipe with the cleaning agent recommended by your supplier.

Remove scuff marks by gently rubbing with a scouring pad – the sort you would use to clean non-stick cookware.

Clean the floor with mild detergent and water. Don’t use abrasive cleaners, which may leave a dull film on your floor. Be careful with spray polishes and other silicone-based products as they can make your floor very slippery, as can white spirit.

Help Your Clients De-Clutter With a Garage Sale

Many agents have come across the client who wants to sell their house and who wants to get rid of their clutter, but has no idea of how to go about it.  A garage/yard/lawn sale is a terrific way to both get clutter out of the house and put some money in your buyers’ pockets.  It’s also a good way to develop a rapport with your clients.  Here are some tips for you to organize a garage sale with your clients and then get all the deadweight out of the house!

  • Take your clients through the concepts of staging.  Impress upon them the need to have everything uncluttered to attract buyers.
  • Give your clients an action plan.  For instance, have them divide each room into “Keep, Consider and Sell.”  Once everything is divided, they need to go through the Consider pile and make a final decision.
  • Offer to put the ad in the paper.
  • Tell them to consider buying a few flats of pop to sell for $1 during hot garage sale days.
  • Help them obtain enough tables for the day; people like browsing on tables as opposed to blankets on the ground.
  • Help them with pricing items.  A price tag should be on everything.  One thing that can help are pre-printed stickers that you can purchase at most print shops or print out yourself using your computer.
  • Remind them that the main goal is to get rid of clutter, not get the maximum price.  For more valuable items that they wish to dispose of, suggest consignment shops, Craigslist or E-Bay.
  • Ensure that their float is suitable.  A good number is $100 broken down into a $20, $10s, $5s and change.
  • Provide them with a cash box for use on the day.
  • Offer to assist with set-up and take-down.
  • Help put up signs.
  • Arrange for transporting the articles they don’t sell to thrift stores, family centers or the dump.  Don’t give them a chance to get it back in the house, because it will stay there.

You certainly don’t have to organize a sale for your clients if you don’t want to, but it’s a great way to bond with them and show them that you care about their situation and their home.  Also, money from the garage sale is a good incentive for your clients to get their home staged quickly.

10 Bathroom Waterproofing Mistakes To Avoid

I have seen countless cases of bad bathroom waterproofing, causing very costly waterproofing repairs and disruption to home owners. This problem is more common than people think, even in relatively new buildings as well as in existing homes when bathroom remodeling is being carried out. Bathroom waterproofing repair can mean major work because tiles, fixtures, floor tile bedding and so on need to come out for the waterproofing to be redone, not to mention restoring everything to its original state. Based on my personal experience, I’ve compiled a list of 10 important mistakes and reasons why bathroom waterproofing fails that you should take seriously.

The following general and specific mistakes come to mind, when looking back at so many of my bathroom waterproofing jobs, carried out over the years. Many home owners give little importance to bathroom waterproofing, especially shower cubicles during a bathroom remodeling process.

1. Attempting to do the waterproofing job yourself, yet having no experience and not following the waterproofing material data sheet and application instructions.

2. Giving the job to an unlicensed and unqualified person and not requesting warranties for the job in writing.

3. Floor and wall surfaces which can be concrete, wood chipboard paneling or cement fibre boards, not prepared and primed adequately before applying the waterproofing membrane material.

4. Not leaving the waterproofing membrane material enough time to dry before applying cement and sand bedding or gluing tiles to it.

5. Inadequate sealing of floor to wall and wall to wall corner details, where there is a lot of movement due to temperature changes which is particularly a problem with cement fibre sheeted walls on timber framing.

6. Not having the membrane turned up under the bathroom door area with an aluminum or brass angle fixed into the floor first.. This is a very common mistake and easily avoidable.

7. Inadequate sealing around pipe and tap wall penetrations in shower cubicles and bathtubs, usually because the plumber had no attention to detail or used the wrong sealant, resulting in water leaking into the wall.. In some instances the repair is not so extensive or difficult, but will still cost money.

8. Although not directly related to waterproofing, the tiler using the wrong type of glue for wall tiles, because the walls were waterproofed with a polyurethane based waterproof membrane for example while the glue used is acrylic based.

9. The plumber should conduct a water pressure test on the water pipes, by leaving the pipes under water pressure for 24 hours and do a visual inspection for any water leaks before the walls are sheeted to ensure that that are no pinholes in the system where water can slowly drip and find its way under the bathroom floor and surrounding areas. In some of the waterproofing rectification jobs I had a contract to do, the culprit for the water leaks from under the bathroom floor turned out to be a small leak in the water pipe in the wall which kept dripping ever so slowly and saturating the area around it.

10. Lastly, if you are going to do the bathroom waterproofing yourself, you must read the manufacturers data sheet for the material, or the instructions on the side of the can, bucket, tube of sealant or other packaging that that waterproofing materials come in. If I were to use a product that I haven’t used before, even though it is chemically the same type of material I would still read the manufacturers instructions on application, priming and other info because there might be something I don’t know. Read the application and other manufacturers instructions carefully and take the time to do the job thoroughly.

Please take the bathroom waterproofing seriously and don’t try to save money on this important part of the remodeling work in your bathroom.. I hope that this article was helpful to you so that you avoid the bathroom waterproofing mistakes listed above.

Top Tips For Picking A Kitchen Faucet

When designing your kitchen, you may be thinking about cabinet styles, flooring, and appliances when creating the look and feel. What many don’t realize is that the kitchen sink can have a big role in your design. While it’s only used for washing dishes, rinsing food, and washing your hands, the kitchen sink comes in many varieties.

There are many common old styles that people go with but over the years the designs of kitchen faucets have expanded in look and function. Whether you are renovating, your old faucet is leaking, or you’re ready for an update, here are the items to consider when choosing your kitchen faucet.

Your Current Faucet and Sink

Take a look at your sink to decide if you want to keep that when getting a new kitchen faucet. If you are going to keep the sink, then you’d be able to use the holes in the sink deck that are already in place. From there you can decide if you want to add a spray hose or sink dispenser.

You may decide to get a new sink, especially if you’re going from a deck-mounted faucet to a wall-mounted faucet. New faucets will range in on to four holes varieties. You can always purchase a faucet that includes a deck plate at the base to cover up old sink holes.

If you choose a deck-mounted faucet, one that mounts directly to the countertop and not the sink, you’ll get a seamless look but it’ll take up countertop space. If you choose a wall-mounted faucet, make sure the distance the water projects will match your sink. It can make countertop cleanup easy but in colder weather you’ll have to insulate against freezing.

For those keeping your sink, make sure you choose a design that would go with the sink style. If you have a stainless-steel sink, it may not look right to add an antique-styled brass faucet.

Where to Begin

When you begin your search you’ll have to make decisions between the spout type, height, and number of handles. Many people are choosing the pull-down spray attachment for the spout type, but you can always get a side-mounted spray hose. The height can range from 10 to 18 inches so choosing the right height would be based on your sink size. Finally, you can always get hot and cold handles but most pull-down faucets only have one handle.

From there you can make decisions about how high-tech you want to go. Consider if you want or need to spend extra on any of the following:

· Hands-free operation

· Built-in water filters

· Touch-sensitive controls

· Spray volume control

· Water pause buttons

Your spout style is something to consider. The “gooseneck” or high arc faucets are trending because it allows more room for cleaning large pots and pants. If you have a large sink then you may want something with a wider spray.

Materials and Finishes

Everyone will find they have their own style to put into their decision. Chrome-plated brass is a popular finish that many choose. Solid brass faucets with ceramic disc valves used to control water flow are going to offer longevity. Many choose stainless steel hoses since they don’t kink as much as other styles.

Again, make sure your kitchen design matches the faucet style. A modern kitchen may not look right with a rustic, farmhouse themed kitchen faucet. Faucets can also vary in angles, curves, and details.

When you choose your materials and finishes, whether that be nickel, chrome, bronze, black, stainless steel, etc., make sure to buy accessories like soap dispensers from the same collection since many manufacturers’ finishes may vary slightly.

Price and Quality

For a more durable faucet, choose stainless steel, solid brass, or a faucet with a ceramic disk valve. It’s more expensive than plastic parts. A heavier faucet in weight will indicate better quality. Solid-brass bodies will last the longest. Faucets with plastic parts don’t last and are cheaper. Eventually you might have to replace it which is an additional cost to you.

There are many factors to consider when choosing the look and functionality of your kitchen faucet. Be sure to consider your needs and what will work best for your kitchen before making your purchase.

Home Gym Flooring – Rubber Mats, Interlocking Tiles Or Rolled Rubber Flooring?

Which flooring is the best type of flooring for a home gym? Are rubber mats the best way to go or perhaps Interlocking Tiles – or maybe rolled rubber flooring? There are many options on the market today. Following is a brief overview of a few of the more popular home gym flooring products on the market with a discussion of some of the pro’s and cons.

Rubber Mats

Rubber Mats were initially designed for the animal husbandry industry (horses, cows, etc.) to help protect livestock from the cold ground and from slips and falls. As a result, these rubber mats are quite durable – after all – they are required to withstand the abuse of 1,000 pound animals as they stomp around with their sharp hooves.

Rubber Mats generally consist of a very dense rubber that is 3/8 “, 1/2″ or 3/4″ thick. These mats are solid black in color. Rubber mats for weight rooms are also available in thinner gauges but their uses are usually for under machines. If you are planning on using free weights with very heavy weights for squat racks or have free weight drop zones, it is recommended that the 3/4″ thick mats be used. The price differential is not that great between the 1/2″ and 3/4” so it is better to go with the heavier weight goods.

Regardless of which thickness of matting you go with, you may wish to stay away from the mats that consist of 100% recycled rubber. They tend to emit an odor that becomes quite strong – especially in an enclosed area like a gym. If the mats are going in a garage setting where there is plenty of ventilation, you may be able to use the mats with a high concentration of recycled rubber and save a few dollars.

Interlocking Tiles

Interlocking Tiles are usually made from a crumb rubber material with a color fleck. The interlocking tiles are cut from rubber rolled flooring like puzzle pieces. These interlocking tiles are usually 3/8″ or 1/2″ in thickness. One of the strong reasons to use an interlocking tile is that it is easier to install, pick up and move, etc. And should one part of the floor become damaged, you can simply remove the tile or tiles that are damaged and replace them with new tiles rather than ordering an entire floor. The tiles are available in a solid black, but it is generally recommended to use color flecks in a 10% or 20% mixture to hide footprints and dirt. Solid black flooring really shows white dirts like hand chalk, foot prints, lint, etc.

Rubber Roll Flooring

Rubber Roll Flooring offers the ability to cover large areas quickly. The rolls are usually 4′ wide and can come in lengths up to 70′ or 80′. Rubber Roll Flooring is available in 1/8″, 1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″ and 1/2″ Thicknesses. In a nutshell, the thinner gauge matting should be glued down to help prevent tearing. These mats are great for rooms where you need a durable product but want to dress it up. The color flecks really add to the aesthetics of the room. Another great feature of using rolled rubber flooring is that seams are almost invisible. And it is simple to cut out any damaged flooring and replace it with a new piece. The color flecks really hide any seams.

As you may have surmised, thicker goods will hold up to the rigors of dumb bells, free weights and abuses associated with weight rooms.

These are a few suggestions for a home gym flooring. Should you have any further questions or particular concerns, please visit us online at We look forward to the opportunity to help you find the gym flooring that is right for you.
