Tommies’ goal at Maturi Pavilion: feel good about how they played

Facing its second Power 5 team in 24 hours, the St. Thomas volleyball team fell to Iowa State 25-12, 26-24, 25-15 in the second round of the Diet Coke Classic at Maturi Pavilion on Friday.

The Gophers will play Iowa State on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Freshman Lauren Galvin had seven kills, three aces and 12 digs to lead the St. Thomas (1-9), which is playing its first season in Division I. The Tommies lost to the Gophers on Thursday night. The Cyclones (8-2) hit .322 and recorded eight service aces against St, Thomas.

Tommies coach Thanh Pham said his players learned some good lessons Thursday night in a 3-0 loss to No. 11-ranked Minnesota. He praised the approach and consistency the Tommies showed here Friday against a tough Iowa State team.

“We were a liitle bit more composed today than we were (Thursday),” Pham said. “Playing in this venue is so special for so many of these players, and it was hard to get over those emotions against the Gophers. I thought our team did a much better job today. Obviously, Iowa State is really a good team, and to push them to extra points in the second set was big for us.”
