Venice 2021 ‘Official Competition’ Review: Duprat and Cohn’s Absurd Tribute to Filmmaking

Venice 2021 ‘Official Competition’ Review: Duprat and Cohn’s Absurd Tribute to Filmmaking

Official Competition (Spanish title: Competencia Oficial) is a festival film about the making of a festival film, premiering in (not coincidentally) official competition at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. Argentinian filmmakers Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn know their audience well, and in their fifth feature film collaboration (after The Distinguished Citizen, also in competition for the Golden Lion in 2016) they succeed in simultaneously mocking and appealing to it. A hilarious high-concept satire with a perfectionist’s eye for plot construction, Official Competition doesn’t take itself — or its medium — too seriously, but glimmers with respect and affection for the form.

The film within the film is born from the end-of-life crisis of pharmaceutical billionaire Humberto Suárez (José Luis Gómez). Surrounded by the detritus of his 80th birthday celebration, he begins to ponder his legacy. What can he create that will carry his name beyond the grave? A bridge, perhaps – his assistant nods in agreement. No, even better: a movie. His assistant tentatively asks, “A movie about what?” It doesn’t matter, it just has to be the best.

In his pursuit of the “best”, the assistant proceeds to buy the rights to a Nobel prize-winning novel (which Humberto doesn’t bother to read) and to bring on Lola Cuevas (Penélope Cruz), a celebrated arthouse director with a reputation for eccentricity. Completing the trinity of inflated egos are the lead actors Felix Rivero (Antonio Banderas) and Ivan Torres (Oscar Martínez), the former a Hollywood sellout of enormous fame and questionable talent, the latter an esteemed theater veteran who inordinately prides himself on humility and artistic integrity. It’s the first time these two industry titans appear together: a fertile source of tension for Lola, and a sure box office draw for the production. That Official Competition is the first film featuring Banderas and Cruz together in leading roles is just one more self-aware joke (and an ironically effective marketing technique) on behalf of Duprat and Cohn.

Manolo Pavon

The true comedic heart of the story is found in the nine days of rehearsal that Lola requires with her actors. Arriving with a gravity-defying red perm, gold palazzo pants (courtesy of costume designer Wanda Morales), and a binder of collages containing what appears to be human hair, she quickly throws her two leading men into a series of increasingly absurd exercises, including reciting their lines underneath a hanging boulder or watching their precious acting awards be destroyed before their eyes. Completely wrapped up in her own self-important sense of process, Lola risks crossing the line into directorial abuse multiple times. Yet there is also a brilliance to these lessons, not only bringing out better acting in Felix and Ivan, but creating scenes that could exist independently as performance art. The audience knows it’s all a satire, but can’t help reveling in the spectacle nonetheless.

Cruz especially succeeds in embodying this fundamentally cinematic struggle between the real and the fake, the sincere and the sarcastic. Her performance shifts between pretension and genuine concern for her actors and her project, and the sight of Lola’s childlike curiosity at watching a TikTok dance (and later desperately trying to learn one) is its own micro-dissertation on the contamination between high and low art. Martinez and Banderas play into this contrast with visible relish, giving voice to the age-old war between art for art’s sake and appealing to the masses. The fun of their relationship is the knowledge that neither side will ever win, but the directors keep the tension high right up until the very last frame.

Manolo Pavon

The vast geometry of Humberto’s modernist palace paired with Arnau Valls Colomer’s precise cinematography only serve to enhance the comedy, providing a minimalist backdrop for the messy antics of the three leads. The writing is equally crisp; if all the jokes land it’s as much thanks to the screenplay as to the talent of the actors. Each scene cleverly delivers comedy and criticism with an echo of larger meaning – all while moving the plot forward and developing the characters, whose admittedly archetypal roles are rendered human with a subtle touch. Towards the end the various pieces of story and theme begin to click together in a way that could be criticized as predictable. But predictability is part of the commentary. These characters, and what they represent, are not new. They have been around as long as art has been around, and trying to reinvent them is a vain pursuit. Rather, Duprat and Cohn seek to have fun with them, and with a festival audience they know could use some laughter every now and then.

Justin Bieber Gets Drunk With Diane Keaton As She Plays His Grieving Mother In ‘Ghost’ Video

Justin Bieber Gets Drunk With Diane Keaton As She Plays His Grieving Mother In ‘Ghost’ Video

With Diane Keaton by his side, Justin Bieber brings his ‘Ghost’ video to life. While the video starts off incredibly sad, Justin helps Diane find herself again once the footage concludes.

A new Justin Bieber music video is a reason for fans to celebrate, but one featuring the Academy Award-winning Diane Keaton? That’s something special, and Justin, 27, gave his Beliebers precisely that on Friday (Oct. 8). Along with the “Complete Version” of his Justice album and a new concert documentary, Justin shared the official music video for his song, “Ghost,” featuring the Annie Hall actress. In the visual, Diane plays Justin’s mother. The two are grieving the loss of Diane’s husband and Justin’s father, as the beginning of the video is set at a funeral.

The footage then jumps to two years later, with Diane still grieving the loss of her husband. Luckily, Justin is there to get her back on her feet. With a new outfit for his mom in hand, Justin takes Diane out on the town. They take shots, go dancing and then drink wine at home, where Justin sets her up on a dating app. In the end, Diane finally gets closure as she dumps her husband’s ashes in the ocean and meets a new man at the beach.

Justin and Diane announced the team-up in separate social media posts on Oct. 6. “AM I DREAMING???” she captioned the video of her living it up alongside Justin. “WHAT AN HONOR IT WAS TO WORK WITH JUSTIN BIEBER AND HIS INCREDIBLE TEAM!!!” In the preview of the video, which Colin Tilley directed, Diane’s character had the time of her life along with Justin. However, with the song about losing a loved one (“Youngblood thinks there’s always tomorrow / I miss your touch some nights when I’m hollow / I know you crossed a bridge that I can’t follow”), this preview was a Pixar-esque set up for some major heartbreak.

The video arrives with a new concert doc — Justin Bieber: Our World — and a complete, final version of Justice. This new package includes three “unreleased” tracks: “Red Eye,” “Angels Speak,” and “Hailey,” the latter obviously about Justin’s wife, Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin). Before this, the tracks had been available in different formats: “Red Eye” featuring TroyBoi was part of the Special Edition of Justice; “Angels Speak” was on the Japanese edition, the Target exclusive edition, and European web store alternative version of Justice; while “Hailey” was available on both the Japanese and Walmart exclusive edition of Justin’s album. The ultimate Belieber likely had all versions of Justice, but for those who didn’t go to those extremes, this “Complete Edition” corralled them all in one place.

Justice arrived in March 2020, one year after he released Changes. While neither album earned widespread love from the critics, both were commercially successful (while Justice was better received.) Justice managed to do something that Changes didn’t – and give Justin another No. 1 song. While Changes had the earworm “Yummy” and Bieber’s collab with Quavo, “Intentions,” neither reached the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Justice’s earlier singles also failed to reach the top (“Holy” hit No. 3, “Lonely” petered out at No. 12, “Anyone” tapped out at No. 6, and “Hold On” didn’t get farther than No. 20.)

When Justin finally released “Peaches” on March 19, along with the album, it debuted atop the Hot 100, making Justin the first solo male artist to debut at No. 1 on Hot 100 and Billboard 200 in the same week, per Billboard. BTS and Taylor Swift are the only two other acts who pulled off the feat. “Peaches” was Justin’s seventh Hot 100 No. 1, and it wouldn’t be his last for the year. Justin would reach the top of the charts again, thanks to The Kid LAROI and TikTok. Bieber lent his vocals to “Stay,” which has spent a cumulative eight weeks at No. 1 this year.

Sonja Morgan & daughter Quincy

Sonja Morgan posed with daughter Quincy for her 21st birthday photoshoot and fans couldn’t tell who was who!

We know “ageless” was a term co-opted by The Real Housewives of New York City‘s Ramona Singer for her skincare business, but her RHONY co-star, Sonja Morgan, continues to fully embody that sentiment. The 57-year-old posed with her daughter, Quincy, 21, in an Instagram video on Thursday, October 7 to celebrate Quincy’s 21st birthday, and fans pointed out how gorgeous Sonja looked as well!

“Here’s what 21 looks like,” the “Real Housewives of New York City” star, 57, captioned her Instagram post. “Happy Birthday my dearest, light of my life, center of my universe.” Quincy also commented under the post, “I LOVE YOU.”

Quincy celebrated her birthday with a lavish party at the Arlo Hotel in New York City, as Sonja shared in the second video on the Instagram post. The quick clip showcased Quincy’s delicious-looking three tiered birthday cake with sparklers firing off on top and numerous friends around for the event. The newly of-age Quincy also shared a snap of the drink menu to her Instagram story, Page Six reported, which included a drink called the “SonjaRita.”

Sonja joined the New York Housewives back in 2010, but has shared much about her private life, but her daughter Quincy was always off limits. Speaking with Page Six in 2018, the mom said of having Quincy on the show, “I just don’t think it’s good. I mean I know how to handle it and I’ll handle myself and I chose it. But I don’t think I should drag anyone else into it, especially a young kid.”

She continued in the interview, “I wanted to provide for my daughter emotional and financial security and you know, no blips for her while she’s getting her education, which education for me as a woman that supports women, you know, is everything.”

Sonja shares Quincy with John Adams Morgan, 91, great-grandson of John Pierpont Morgan who founded J.P. Morgan & Co. Sonja and John were married in 1998 and split in 2006. Although the pair have been separated for a while, Sonja shared her struggles with her feelings about the divorce on RHONY on numerous occasions, noting how much the separation took a toll on her. Even so, she and Quincy maintain a close relationship.

Riley Keough Is Groovy In ’70s Inspired Outfit On Set Of Fleetwood Mac Inspired Series

Stevie Nicks, is that you? Riley Keough looks retro while on set of her upcoming Amazon series ‘Daisy Jones and the Six.’

Riley Keough channeled her best Stevie Nicks while on set of her upcoming Amazon miniseries on October 7. The actress, 32, was photographed in retro wide-leg red pants and 1970s front tie blouse in Los Angeles on Thursday, finishing the look with a partial updo and bangs.

The star is currently filming Daisy Jones and the Six, a rock music drama that chronicles the rise of a fictional rock band, Daisy Jones and the Six, through the ’70s Los Angeles music scene. Based on the 2019 book by Taylor Jenkins Reid of the same name, the 12-episode series is produced by Reese Witherspoon‘s company Hello Sunshine.

Riley’s resemblance to Stevie comes as no accident, as the source material was inspired by iconic rock band Fleetwood Mac. In a blog post on Hello Sunshine’s website in 2019, Taylor penned a piece about how Stevie’s long and complicated relationship with fellow bandmate Lindsey Buckingham inspired her book.

The inspiration came when Taylor revisited The Dance, the band’s 1997 TV reunion special. The author wrote in the blog post:

I watched it in its entirety. I saw that later on in the show, Stevie sung ‘Silver Springs,’ like a woman scorned, holding that microphone like a weapon, drilling holes into Lindsey’s head with her eyes as she sang that her voice would haunt him. I was savvier then, I understood that sometimes looking like you’re in love or in hate are things you ramp up a bit to make a good show. I also understood then what I could never have conceived of in 1997: Love makes no goddamn sense.

And yet, two years ago, when I decided I wanted to write a book about rock ‘n’ roll, I kept coming back to that moment when Lindsey watched Stevie sing ‘Landslide.’ How it looked so much like two people in love. And yet, we’ll never truly know what lived between them. I wanted to write a story about that, about how the lines between real life and performance can get blurred, about how singing about old wounds might keep them fresh.

A release date for the film has not been announced yet. Sam Claflin, Suki Waterhouse, Camila Morrone, and Sebastian Chacon also star.

Rege-Jean Page Singing In New Clip Has ‘Bridgerton’ Fans Swooning Hard: Listen

Published

on

Rege-Jean Page

Rege-Jean Page is a man of many talents. The actor sent fans swooning when he graced our ears with his magical voice, singing in Greek in a 30-second clip posted by Audible on Twitter on Oct. 7.

As if we needed another reason to obsess over the Duke of Hastings. Rege-Jean Page, 31, sent Bridgerton fans into a frenzy when audible released a clip of the actor singing on Oct. 7.

The hunk, who voices the character of Orpheus in the audio drama adaptation of The Sandman, sang in Greek for Act II of the drama. Co-executive producer and director of the audio play Dirk Maggs was impressed, to say the least.

“We have Rege-Jean Page as Orpheus, and it turns out that Rege-Jean Page is not only an excellent actor and an outrageously good-looking chap. He also sings like an angel,” Dirk states in the 30-second clip. “I’ve been, and I’ve got to say, it still sends shivers up my spine.”

The short, but swoon-worthy clip drove fans to the comments, leaving them burning for more. “I will say I was up @ 3 am when Neil said audible would release our pre-order on the East coast with all of my friends, trying to find which episode RJP was singing. Maddening. Some friends in Puerto Rico too #worthit we had it on replay the next day at work too. Thanks!,” one fan wrote, while another said, “He is checking all the boxes! Actor, singer, dancer…those Bridgerton waltzes were nothing to play with!) What’s next?? Goosebumps is an understatement!!”

The handsome actor had quite the humbling response to practically breaking the internet. He jokingly tweeting in response to the clip, “Did @audible_com just drop my untreated stems? Rude.”

Add another talent to the list! Rege-Jean Paul surprised fans when a video of him singing in Greek was released, by Audible, on Oct. 7. (Dan Steinberg/Invision/AP/Shutterstock)

Regé is, of course, extremely talented. Beyond the hit Shonda Rhimes period drama Bridgerton, he was on a few major productions prior such as legal drama, For The People, as well as the Amazon original romance film, Sylvie’s Love, alongside Tessa Thompson.

While all of the projects were successful, his role as the Duke of Hastings truly caught everyone’s attention (as a whopping 63 million households had watched the show within the first 28 days). Sadly he won’t officially be on season two of the series; however, in an interview with British GQ on September 1, the actor curiously played coy — suggesting he could possibly return. “You know I couldn’t tell you,” he said, and gave a slick answer when he was asked more. “Isn’t there something wonderful about being surprised by what you weren’t suspecting?”

Ray J’s Kids: Meet His Two Little Ones With Princess Love

Published

Princess Love, Ray J, and daughter Melody

Ray J and Princess Love may have their ups and downs, but they’re always there for their kids. Find out more about their adorable young ones and family unit here.

Ray J, 40, is singer, television personality, and actor, and he shares two children, Melody, 3, and Epik, 1, with estranged wife, Princess Love, 36. The two star in Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood and are currently facing more drama by the day as Ray J recently filed for divorce for the third time against Princess — all while battling pneumonia in the hospital.

The couple’s relationship has definitely been a roller coaster ride since they began dating in 2014 and then tied the knot in 2016, but they’ve for their two adorable children. Find out more about Melody and Epik here and what’s in store for Ray J and Princess as they move forward as a family.

Melody Love Norwood

Melody is Princess and Ray J’s first child, born May 22, 2108. The little cutie made a few uncredited appearances on Love & Hip Hop with her parents and her welcoming to the world was chronicled in Ray J & Princess’ Labor of Love, a special which detailed the couple’s journey to parenthood. Unfortunately, Melody has been through her parents’ relationship ups and downs. Princess claimed Ray J left she and Melody in Las Vegas in November 2019 after the BET Soul Train Awards while she was pregnant with her second child.

Ray J went on to deny the claims and later released a video refuting the story completely. “I am my family. I love my family. I’ve dedicated my life to my family,” he shared. “To insinuate that I would do anything to harm my daughter was just sad, man.”

Epik Ray Norwood

Although the couple continued to struggle in their relationship, they welcomed Epik on January 7, 2020, coming together for their newborn son as Ray J celebrated his role as a father. The businessman also released a touching video around the event, sharing his excitement with fans and writing on Twitter, “I love you @mzprincesslove so proud of you. Strongest women [sic] in the world and the mother of my children. ❤️❤️❤️❤️” Princess also shared a tender shot of her newborn baby boy upon his arrival while Ray J commented EXCLUSIVELY to HollywoodLife at the time, “The main thing I see is just being a good father. I just had another baby. I had a baby boy and my daughter is one and he’s right behind her. So being the best father is everything.”

He also shared with Us Weekly at the time of Epik’s birth that his being able to “relive” the feeling of becoming a father with baby Epik was “the ultimate feeling in the world.” He went on, “I am so blessed to have a son and a daughter. My life is complete. Thank you to Princess for everything. I love my family so much.”

Ray J, Princess Love, and their daughter Melody smile for the cameras at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards (Shutterstock).

Although the couple continue to go back-and-forth on the status of their relationship, earlier this year a source close to Ray J cited the singer’s desire for a long-term marriage and family unit as the driving force for him trying to make things work with Princess. “[W]hen Ray J and Princess Love split, he never wanted to call things off and was determined to make it work regardless of everything that had happened between them,” the source shared. “Despite his public persona or what some may think, Ray J truly is a family man and that’s always been his number one priority.”

Sarah Jeffery Dishes On New Single ‘Suffer’ & What It Was Like Working With Rock Mafia For 2nd Track

Artist Sarah Jeffery has a hot new single out and she EXCLUSIVELY told HL what it was like working Rock Mafia for a second time around!

Actress and musician Sarah Jeffery, 25, has a catchy new song titled Suffer about a break-up on her second track with Rock Mafia. “They’ve been so amazing,” Sarah told HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY during an episode of TVTalk on Instagram Live on Sept. 30 of reuniting with the producer and song writing trio. “Not just as producers and musicians but as people, so it’s been a really amazing collaborative experience and I’m excited to see what else we can cook up.”

Best known for playing Princess Audrey in Disney’s Descendant’s movie series, Sarah’s putting her focus on music after the song’s Oct. 1 release. “I’m so excited,” Sarah said of the song finally being released. “I feel like it’s been a long time coming and everything’s been kind of stunted with the pandemic. I’ve been ready for awhile and now it’s finally here and I’m very excited to hear it with the world.”

While she’s staying mum on who exactly this is about, it’s relatable to just about any person out there who’s ever been in a relationship that didn’t work out. “I guess it’s less about someone specific and more just — I had a really hard breakup about 4 years ago and one that kind of just shook me to my core,” Sarah revealed. “I think a lot of people have gone through something like that whether it’s a friendship or a boyfriend or a girlfriend and yeah, that breakup really stuck with me. It forced me to get to know myself better and remind myself that I only have me at the end of the day and for me the song is about that’s their loss and your gain and yeah, just finding the silver lining. The silver lining that yeah, I get to date myself now.”

It’s a mystery if this ex knows this song is in fact about him, but Sarah is getting the last laugh when it comes down to it. “That’s a good question!” Sarah said. “Probably not, although I do know that when I booked the series Charmed, there was a billboard right outside of where he lived so that was good. Maybe he does, who knows.”

Speaking of her hit show, Sarah is looking forward to reprising her role as Maggie Vera any day now as filming is set to begin on season 4. “There’s a lot of change this season and I’ve only read the first couple scripts and so far they’re really fun,” Sarah teased. “I think fans can look forward to just a lot of different stuff. I’ve heard a few sneak peaks of what’s to come and it’s so fun. It’s just a magical world, so the options are limitless and I also think that they can expect the changes to be handled in a very delicate and respectful way.”

Kate Hudson and daughter Rani Rose sang an inspired rendition of ‘Girl on Fire’ by Alicia Keys. Watch the sweet performance.

Rani Rose could have a career in Hollywood. Kate Hudson shared a delightful new video of her and her daughter, 3, performing a spirited rendition of Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire.” In the clip shared on Instagram on October 7, the actress’ daughter with musician Danny Fujikawa belted out the lyrics to her “favorite song” as she emerged from behind a baby gate.

“7:30 am showing!” Kate, 42, captioned the post. “Rani’s favorite song This Girl is On Fire 🔥 This is how we do it over here….we love putting on a show LETS GO!” Rani opted for soft, melodious start, and eventually put her all into it once she and her mom reached the chorus. She even gave a bow at the end of her inspired performance. Her concert ensemble? A tie-dye dress and festive hairband.

Before sharing the performance in full, Kate uploaded a series of stills that featured her daughter singing while she performed an interpretive dance. She captioned the post, “Interpretive dance is kind of our thing.”

Along with Rani, Kate is also mom to sons Ryder, 17, and Bingham, 10, whom she shares with previous partners. The Almost Famous star began a relationship with her musician fiancé, 35, in 2017. Kate announced their engagement on Instagram on September 13, sharing a photo of the two kissing and showing off her ring. She captioned the post, “Let’s go!”

The marriage would mark Danny’s first time down the aisle, and Kate’s second. She was previously married to Chris Robinson between 2000 and 2007. They share son Ryder together. While Kate and Danny have been romantically linked for four years, they’ve actually known each other for over a decade.

Kate previously revealed in 2017 that she met her fiancé when she was 23 and pregnant with her first child, explaining that they met through his stepsisters (and her besties) Erin and Sara Foster. (Erin and Sara’s mother Rebecca Dyer was with Danny’s father Ron for several years until his death.) “The first time I met Danny I was 23 and enormously pregnant with Ryder,” she wrote on Instagram.

“His step sisters are my best friends @sarafoster @erinfoster and so it goes we have been in the same circle for over a decade!” Kate continued. “A year ago today Danny took me on a hike and what I thought was just a hike with a family friend turned very quickly into an unexpected first date. . . on our 15th year of knowing each other we were able to open our hearts to each other to feel so much pure love and it’s been truly incredible.”
