Grading the Week: CU Buffs coach Karl Dorrell is running it back on offense — under the cover of Pac-12 After Dark-ness

Never has an 8:30 p.m. kickoff been so welcome for CU football fans.

After what transpired last week against the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Folsom Field, perhaps it’s best that the Buffs play under the cover of Pac-12 After Dark-ness.

With head coach Karl Dorrell signing up for another Saturday of the same old shenanigans, we can think of no better setting.

Karl Dorrell — Inc.

The CU Buffs head coach vowed to “start all over” in the wake of one of the worst offensive performances in program history — which, apparently, means getting the band back together for another jam session Saturday at Arizona State.

Freshman Brendon Lewis is still the quarterback.

Offensive coordinator Darrin Chiaverini is still drawing up the plays.

And the Buffs head football coach is going to … “show my face in the offensive room a little bit more now.”

Sounds like one heck of a reboot, as well as something best previewed by a limited audience — one they’ll almost certainly draw given that the game is on ESPNU and won’t end until sometime after midnight MDT.

If Dorrell’s decision to stay the course works out, Buffs fans will hear about it Sunday morning and be pleasantly surprised.

If it doesn’t — and that’s where the Grading the Week staff would put our money, if we had any — bedtime will have beckoned long before things get ugly, anyway.

And maybe then, with the USC Trojans stumbling into Boulder next week, Dorrell will finally have all the information he needs to decide whether or not the status quo has a future at Folsom Field.

Because seven quarters of scoreless football, and a passing attack surpassed by all but one FBS program (including triple-option practitioners Air Force and Army), evidently isn’t enough.

Teddy Bridgewater — A+

If you’re not on Team Teddy at this point, you’re just being obnoxious.

After submitting two near flawless performances as Broncos quarterback — albeit against two very flawed teams in the New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars — Bridgewater has shown the Grading the Week staff enough.

Consider us the lead conductors of the Teddy Train, and we’re welcoming any and all passengers.

Could we interest you in four touchdowns, zero interceptions and two double-digit wins? How about a 120.7 passer rating? Not even Tom Brady has matched the latter through two weeks (although, yes, he does have nine touchdown passes).

It’s slightly terrifying how comfortable Bridgewater looks as chaos swirls around him in the pocket. We can’t help but wonder if the former Louisville star missed his calling as an air traffic controller.

Say what you will about Drew Lock’s unlimited upside, that’s not something we ever considered in his 18 starts under center.

Broncos ownership rumors — B

Nothing gets the Grading the Week staff going quite like some juicy Broncos ownership rumors.

Amid Southwest Airlines’ woes, unsupported “sickout” claims take flight

DALLAS — When Southwest Airlines canceled more than 2,000 flights over the weekend, citing bad weather and air traffic control issues, unsupported claims blaming vaccine mandates began taking off.

Conservative politicians and pundits, including Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, alleged the flight disruptions resulted from pilots and air traffic controllers walking off their jobs or calling in sick to protest federal vaccination requirements.

The airline, its pilots’ union and the Federal Aviation Administration denied that.

“The weekend challenges were not a result of Southwest employee demonstrations,” Southwest spokesman Chris Mainz said Monday.

Still, Twitter posts claiming airline employees were “standing up to medical tyranny” and participating in a “mass sickout” amassed thousands of shares. Vague and anonymous messages on social media speculated that Southwest was hiding the real reason for its disruptions. And anti-vaccine rallying cries such as #DoNotComply, #NoVaccineMandate and #HoldTheLine were among the 10 most popular hashtags tweeted in connection to Southwest over the weekend, according to a report from media intelligence firm Zignal Labs.

Even as flights appeared to be running closer to normal on Tuesday, the Texas-based airline remained at the center of the latest front in the vaccine mandate culture war, its challenges exploited by opponents of vaccine requirements.

Neither the company nor its pilots’ union has provided evidence to back up their explanations for why nearly 2,400 flights were canceled from Saturday through Monday. Southwest has only said that bad weather and air traffic control issues in Florida on Friday triggered cascading failures in which planes and pilots were trapped out of position for their next flight.

The crisis peaked on Sunday, when the airline canceled more than 1,100 flights, or 30% of its schedule. By Tuesday evening, it had canceled fewer than 100 flights, or 2% of its schedule, although more than 1,000 flights were delayed, according to tracking service FlightAware.

“When you get behind, it just takes several days to catch up,” CEO Gary Kelly said Tuesday on CNBC. “We were significantly set behind on Friday.”

Southwest struggled all summer with delays and cancellations. A senior executive admitted to employees Sunday that the airline is still understaffed and might need to reduce flights in November and December.

Denver election 2021: Voters asked to tax recreational marijuana sales to fund pandemic research

Denver election 2021: Voters asked to tax recreational marijuana sales to fund pandemic research

Ordinance 300 on Denver’s Nov. 2 ballot asks voters to establish a pandemic research fund by bumping the city’s marijuana sales tax rate up to 11.8% from 10.3%, adding an extra 15 cents to every $10 spent in a recreational dispensary.

It has identified a local institution, the University of Colorado Denver’s CityCenter, to lead that potential research which would be focused on technologies that could protect people from contagious diseases and public policy changes that could boost preparedness and recovery in the event of a pandemic.

“The people of Denver want to be prepared the next time a pandemic strikes and this ballot initiative is the way to make that happen,” the Denver Pandemic Fund campaign said in a statement emailed to the Denver Post.

But opponents, including Mayor Michael Hancock, say it’s a misguided measure that would bring an unnecessary tax burden down on Denverites.

The measure was proposed by Guarding Against Pandemics, a nonprofit organization backed by cryptocurrency billionaire and Joe Biden donor Sam Bankman-Fried.

Campaign finance records show that the Guarding Against Pandemics has donated $250,000 to the Denver Pademic Fund Campaign this year. The organization lists an address in Delaware.

While originating from out of state, the campaign noted it has been endorsed by the Colorado Nurses Association.

CU Denver, whose CityCenter arm is named in the ordinance as a recipient of the funding the tax increase would bring in, has not endorsed the measure.

Fantasy football NFL Week 6 best bets to score: Austin Ekeler, Emmanuel Sanders, Najee Harris

Fantasy football NFL Week 6 best bets to score: Austin Ekeler, Emmanuel Sanders, Najee Harris

We’re almost a third of the way through the fantasy season, so scoring trends are starting to stick. These players are my best bets to keep finding the end zone at the running back and wide receivers positions in Week 6.

Running Back

AUSTIN EKELER, Chargers

Ekeler, a former Eaton High School and Western Colorado standout, is on a roll going into Week 6, having scored seven TDs to start the season. A key factor is none of the backs behind him can seem to cement a place in the rotation. With Baltimore and its middling run defense on deck, Ekeler should have little trouble finding the end zone with his 43.61% TD dependency and more than 70% snap count.

DARRELL HENDERSON, Rams

He may be injury-prone at times, but Henderson is a fantasy force when he’s on the field for the Rams, amassing at least 80 yards and a TD in three of the four games he’s played in this season. He’ll face a Giants team this week that is the seventh-best matchup for opposing running backs right now, and Henderson is playing almost 80% of snaps even with Sony Michel in the mix, so chances of him scoring this week are good.

JAMES ROBINSON, Jaguars

Robinson had a slow start to his season, but he’s finding a rhythm in the Jaguars offense, scoring four TDs in his past three games and getting more snap counts each week. With a TD dependency of 33.57%, which is impressive considering he didn’t score in his first two games, Robinson is poised to reach the end zone against a Miami team that has allowed the second-most fantasy points to running backs this season.

ANTONIO GIBSON, Washington

Gibson has a shin injury, but that hasn’t stopped him from developing into a goal-line threat, scoring three TDs over his past two games. As long as he’s on the field, he’ll produce, and Gibson is on the field almost 60% of the time. He’ll go up against a Chiefs defense this week that has allowed nine TDs on the ground this season, tied for most in the NFL.

NAJEE HARRIS, Steelers

Harris is doing it all for the Steelers these days, as injuries have affected the offense. On the field almost 85% of the time over his past four games, Harris has even developed into a primary receiving option with 31 targets in his past three games. Scoring three TDs in five games, Harris is a prime candidate to reach the end zone against a Seattle team that has allowed the third-most fantasy points to running backs this season.

Wide Receiver

TYREEK HILL, Chiefs

Hill has scored three TDs in his past two games, and the Chiefs will lean on him even more now that RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire is sidelined with a knee injury for at least the next several games. Already on the field 85% of KC’s offensive snaps, Hill is always just a play away from breaking off a major gain with six points tacked onto the end. This week he’ll go against a once-vaunted Washington secondary that has now allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to wide receivers this season.

EMMANUEL SANDERS, Bills

Buffalo’s highest fantasy point-scoring WR over the past three games, in which he’s scored four TDs, Sanders is off to a strong start. On the field 79% of the time, more than any other Bills WR, Sanders has developed into Josh Allen’s favorite deep ball option. He could have a field day in Week 6 against a Titans team that is the best matchup for WRs in the NFL.

DIONTAE JOHNSON, Steelers

Scoring a TD in all but one game he’s played in this season, Johnson has also seen double-digit targets in all but one game. Even last week, when he only got two targets against the Broncos, one of them was for a score so we know Roethlisberger is looking for him in the red zone. He’ll face a Seahawks team this week that has given up the sixth-most fantasy points to WRs this season.

FDA grapples with timing of booster for J&J COVID-19 vaccine

FDA grapples with timing of booster for J&J COVID-19 vaccine

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday it is wrestling with whether and when recipients of the single-shot Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine need another dose — at six months or as early as two months.

In an online review, FDA scientists didn’t reach a firm conclusion, citing shortcomings with J&J’s data, including little information on protection against the extra-contagious delta variant of the coronavirus.

The review comes ahead of meetings Thursday and Friday when an FDA advisory panel will recommend whether to back booster doses of both the J&J and Moderna vaccines. That’s one step in the government’s vaccine review process: Next week, the FDA will make a final decision on authorizing those boosters and then the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will debate who actually should get them.

Health authorities say all the vaccines used in the U.S. continue to provide strong protection against severe disease or death from COVID-19. But amid signs that protection against milder infections may be waning, the government already has cleared booster doses of the Pfizer vaccine for certain people starting at six months after their last shot.

Aiming for uniform recommendations, Moderna likewise asked the FDA to clear its booster dose at six months. But J&J complicated the decision by proposing a second shot over a range of two to six months.

FDA reviewers wrote that a study of the two-month booster plan suggests “there may be a benefit,” while pointing to only small numbers of people who got another shot at six months instead.

Overall, the J&J vaccine “still affords protection against severe COVID-19 disease and death,” the FDA’s reviewers concluded. But data about its effectiveness “are consistently less” than the protection seen with Pfizer and Moderna shots.

Pac-12 picks: UW’s competitive advantage over UCLA; ASU handles Utah; Cal hangs with Oregon

The Hotline typically takes a close look at key trends and statistics when evaluating Pac-12 games against the point spread, but not always.

Under certain circumstances, we make a selection with little thought and zero hesitation.

UCLA’s visit to Washington on Saturday afternoon is one of those circumstances.

The Huskies are an easy call, and here’s our 12-word explanation: Second consecutive road game against a home team coming off a bye.

UCLA is playing the second leg of back-to-back roadies and doing so against a host that has had two weeks to prepare.

What’s more, the Bruins are doing it after a night game in Tucson that was in doubt until midway through the fourth quarter. They returned to campus in the wee hours, had a quick turnaround to prepare for UW, then headed back on the road.

Meanwhile, the Huskies have been sitting around Montlake for two full weeks, resting and healing and preparing for the Bruins.

That’s a significant competitive advantage — one the Huskies are acutely familiar with, albeit from the other side.

Three years ago, Washington played a rugged game in Pasadena that was in doubt late in the fourth quarter. The following week, they were back on the road — to Eugene — for an afternoon showdown against the Ducks.

Oregon had been lying in wait for two weeks, resting up and focused entirely on UW. The game went to overtime, with the Ducks prevailing.

Then, as now, the home team with two weeks to prepare held a significant competitive advantage.

Budpop products are all lab-tested and manufactured in the United States. BudPop CBD gummies are a great place to start if you’re new to CBD. Features

The thing about CBD gummies is that they aren’t always delicious but they are ideal for getting a good night’s sleep. Gummy candies are challenging enough to get right in terms of texture and flavor as it is, but adding the strong taste of most CBD products results in a whole new level of difficulty.

CBD gummies by Charlotte’s web, on the other hand, has nailed the fruity flavoring. They come in a variety of juicy, Hawaiian-inspired flavors, as well as a handful of distinct textures and sugar-free gummies for those on a diet. JustCBD is a well-known CBD company. The firm, which is based in Florida, has been producing CBD products since 2017. FDA may penalize companies that break FDA regulations by sending out warning letters that detail the particular infractions. JustCBD has not gotten an FDA warning letter yet, which is a positive indication.

Features

While full-spectrum CBD gummies have a stronger flavor than CBD isolate gummies, there are certain advantages to purchasing a gummy with a more robust recipe. JustCBD gummies contain the full-spectrum CBD that has made the JustCBD brand famous.

Hemp products grown in the United States and Europe are usually regarded as safe for consumption. This is because the farms are controlled to produce hemp that is free of polluting chemicals, hazardous compounds, metals, and high THC levels – the psychoactive component of cannabis.

The following are the extracts that are available: broad and full-spectrum, as well as isolates. The user will have to decide which type to consume, and they must be informed about what each type entails.

Many manufacturers will prominently display the third-party laboratories they work with, so you can double-check this during your investigation.

Be sure you’re getting your money’s worth by keeping an eye out for brands that provide offers and discounts in order to build your loyalty quickly.

Individual reviews can also be useful in determining how good a brand is. Some websites will reflect this, including pertinent features from periodicals or television, so it’s best to check each one separately.

William Shatner, TV’s Capt. Kirk, blasts into space with Blue Origin

VAN HORN, Texas — Hollywood’s Captain Kirk, 90-year-old William Shatner, blasted into space Wednesday in a convergence of science fiction and science reality, reaching the final frontier aboard a ship built by Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin company.

The “Star Trek” hero and three fellow passengers hurtled to an estimated 66 miles (106 kilometers) over the West Texas desert in the fully automated capsule, then safely parachuted back to Earth in a flight that lasted just over 10 minutes.

“You have done something,” an exhilarated Shatner told Bezos as he emerged from the capsule, the words spilling from him in a torrent. ”What you have given me is the most profound experience.” He added: “I hope I never recover from this.”

He said that going from the blue sky to the blackness of space was a moving experience that made him wonder, “Is that the way death is?”

Shatner became the oldest person in space, eclipsing the previous record — set by a passenger on a similar jaunt on a Bezos spaceship in July — by eight years. The flight included about three minutes of weightlessness and a view of the curvature of the Earth.

Sci-fi fans reveled in the opportunity to see the man best known as the stalwart Capt. James T. Kirk of the starship Enterprise boldly go where no star of American TV has gone before.

“This is a pinch-me moment for all of us to see Capt. James Tiberius Kirk go to space,” Blue Origin launch commentator Jacki Cortese said before liftoff. She said she, like so many others, was drawn to the space business by shows like “Star Trek.”

Bezos is a huge “Star Trek” fan — the Amazon founder had a cameo as an alien in one of the later “Star Trek” movies — and Shatner rode free as his invited guest.

The blastoff brought priceless star power to Bezos’ spaceship company, given its built-in appeal to baby boomers, celebrity watchers and space enthusiasts. Shatner starred in TV’s original “Star Trek” from 1966 to 1969, back when the U.S. was racing for the moon, and went on to appear in a string of “Star Trek” movies.

Bezos himself drove the four to the pad, accompanied them to the platform high above the ground and cranked the hatch shut after they climbed aboard the 60-foot rocket. A jubilant Bezos was there to greet them when the capsule floated back to Earth under its brilliant blue-and-red parachutes.

“Hello, astronauts. Welcome to Earth!” Bezos said as he opened the hatch and was embraced by Shatner. The capsule, New Shepard, was named for first American in space, Alan Shepard.

The flight comes as the space tourism industry finally takes off, with passengers joyriding aboard ships built and operated by some of the richest men in the world.

Virgin Galactic’s Richard Branson led the way by riding into space in his own rocket ship in July, followed by Bezos nine days later on Blue Origin’s first flight with a crew. Elon Musk’s SpaceX made its first private voyage in mid-September, though without Musk aboard.

Last week, the Russians launched an actor and a film director to the International Space Station for a movie-making project.

“We’re just at the beginning, but how miraculous that beginning is. How extraordinary it is to be part of that beginning,” Shatner said in a Blue Origin video posted on the eve of his flight.

Shatner strapped in alongside Audrey Powers, a Blue Origin vice president and former space station flight controller for NASA, and two paying customers: Chris Boshuizen, a former NASA engineer who co-founded a satellite company, and Glen de Vries of a 3D software company. Blue Origin would not divulge the cost of their tickets.
