Broncos Briefs: KJ Hamler, Graham Glasgow, Dalton Risner unable to finish win over Jets

The Broncos’ already-lengthy injury list grew by three starters during Sunday’s 26-0 win over the New York Jets, further depleting the team’s depth.

Receiver KJ Hamler (knee), right guard Graham Glasgow (knee) and left guard Dalton Risner (foot) were injured and did not return.

Hamler landed awkwardly while attempting to catch a downfield throw from quarterback Teddy Bridgewater late in the first half. Hamler needed assistance from the medical staff to get to the locker room.

Glasgow, who started after missing Week 2 due to an irregular heartbeat in Week 1, walked gingerly off the field and tried several pass protection sets on the sideline. He did not return, though, and was replaced by Netane Muti.

Risner was sidelined late in the third quarter and replaced by rookie Quinn Meinerz, who made his NFL regular season debut.

“We should know more as the week goes on,” coach Vic Fangio said.

Mike Lynch’s Skywatch: The great flying horse of the sky

Mike Lynch’s Skywatch: The great flying horse of the sky

One of the classic constellations of the night is Pegasus, the flying horse. The heavenly horsey is currently soaring in the southeastern early evening sky. The traditional interpretation of Pegasus is a horse flying upside down with puny little wings. If you can see it that way, more power to you. Over the years I’ve strayed from that view of Pegasus, although I’m not the only one. I see a majestic horse flying right-side up with a huge wingspan. It’s the version of Pegasus you see on old Mobile gas station signs. Pegasus is rescuing the lovely Princess Andromeda from a giant ravenous sea monster.

As soon as it’s dark enough, look directly above the eastern horizon for a giant diamond of four fairly bright stars that outline the torso of Pegasus, otherwise known as the “Square of Pegasus.” They’re easy to spot since they are the brightest stars in that area of the sky. The star at the top of the diamond is Scheat, the base of the flying horse’s neck. Look above Scheat for two fainter stars that outline the rest of the neck and another relatively faint star to the lower right of the neck that marks the flying horsey’s nose.

The horse has a multi-jointed front leg that extends upward in a curved line. To see it, start at Markab, on the right-hand corner of the square of Pegasus. From there, look for a curved line of slightly fainter stars that extend up to the upper right. There’s a moderately bright star, Enif, that marks one of Pegasus’s hooves.

I love the name of the star on the left corner of the square of Pegasus. It’s called Alpheratz. You can easily see a curved line of three bright stars extending to the lower left of Alpheratz. That outlines the mighty wings of Pegasus. Above the wing stars, there’s another nearly parallel line of fainter stars.  That outlines Andromeda, the Princess, who’s hitched to the rear end of the horse. In the traditional view of the upside-down flying Pegasus, both the bright and faint curved lines of stars attached to Alpheratz make up the constellation Andromeda the Princess.

No matter how you see Pegasus and Andromeda’s constellations, the saga of how the lovely princess found herself tied to a flying horse’s rear end is part of the great Greek mythological story involving Perseus, Cassiopeia, Pegasus, and Princess Andromeda.

Perseus, son of Zeus, king of the gods, was flying back from a mission when he flew over a distressing scene. The ugly giant sea monster Cetus was closing in on a beach where Princess Andromeda was chained to a rock by her own parents, Cassiopeia and Cepheus, the king and queen of ancient Ethiopia. They were forced to offer their daughter as a sacrifice to Cetus to keep their entire kingdom from being ravaged by the sea monster. Perseus had to save this damsel in distress, but he had to be smart about it.

The mission Perseus had completed was to cut off the head of Medusa, a terrible monster that was so ugly that anyone who looked at it turned to stone. Entire communities were being stoned! It had to be stopped. To keep from being stoned himself, he managed to lop off Medusa’s head while looking the other way. That took a lot of skill!

As quick-thinking Perseus approached the sea monster, he whipped out Medusa’s head and waved it at Cetus just as the beast was about to make lunch out of Princess Andromeda. That’s all it took! Cetus sank into the depths, never to be seen again!

But that’s not all. Blood from the severed head of Medusa hit the ocean waves and magically produced Pegasus, a beautiful white-winged horse. The magical horse instinctively flew down to the boulder where Andromeda was, chewed off the chains, and then flew the Princess up to Perseus, where it was love at first sight. Perseus and Andromeda were soon married.

One of the best celestial gems in the traditional constellation Andromeda is the Andromeda Galaxy, otherwise known as Messier Object 31. The Andromeda galaxy is our Milky Way galaxy’s next-door neighbor, over 2 million light-years away, with just one light year equaling almost 6 trillion miles! With just a small telescope or binoculars, scan that area of the heavens just above the princess look for a ghostly fuzzy patch. That small fuzzy patch is the home of possibly a trillion stars with many, many more planets. In the dark countryside you may even see it with the naked eye.

Readers and writers: New books continue two series with local roots

Today we offer new books in two series. John Santana investigates missing drug money and sex trafficking, and Humboldt Prior of Woodhouse Avenue tries to keep his cousins from going to jail because of bank fraud and a stinky foot cream.

“The Price of Life” by Christopher Valen (Santa Rita Press, $17)

Keeping his head low and his chin tucked into his chest, Santana moved inside and hammered Grant’s mid-section with a left/right combination. As the air rushed out of Grant, Santana stepped back and threw a short right uppercut that caught Grant flush on the chin. — From “The Price of Life”

“The Price of Life” by Christopher Valen (Santa Rita Press)

There are three bodies in the bedroom of the opulent home. Two are a married couple who live there and the third is Drug Enforcement Administration agent Joel Ryker. Missing from the safe: half a million in drug money

St. Paul homicide Det. John Santana, searching the scene, figures from the blood spatter patterns that there had to be a fourth person in the room, and he’s right. Ana is a young, beautiful Mexican woman who’s been sex trafficked and sees the backpack full of drug money as her ticket to freedom.

So begins  Christopher Valen’s eighth police procedural featuring Santana, who was born in Colombia and knows about Mexican cartels because one ordered his mother raped and killed.

When the three bodies are discovered in a nice St. Paul neighborhood, Santana had been working on the cold case of a young woman whose body was found four years earlier at Pig’s Eye Regional Park.

Now Santana is paired with Bobbi Chacon, the dead DEA agent’s partner who’s determined to find Ryker’s killer. Her quick temper and need for revenge mean Santana has to keep an eye on her and her Glock. Then they discover Ryker was in the process of stealing the money himself when the bullets started to fly.

Where is Ana and the missing money? Santana and Chacon want to know, and so does a sicario, a Mexican cartel killer who doesn’t hesitate to use his gun.

Santana and his partner get information about a Cathedral Hill mansion where a woman is running a high-class escort service that employed Ana. But she, and the money, have again disappeared.

It all comes together slowly, as Santana painstakingly follows the clues, never sure whether Chacon was in on her partner’s scheme to steal the money. While they’re working the case their bosses give them grief and there’s internal bickering between agencies. Meanwhile, clues point to a group of very wealthy local men running a video porn operation using drugged women.

As the investigation continues, Santana is more and more convinced the drug money is connected to the cold case he was working on at the beginning of the story. That’s confirmed by hooded men in a dark barn.

Santana is an interesting character, methodical in his work, concerned for the young women being used in videos, and not given to taking foolish chances. The secondary characters, like Chacon and Ana, are believable and alive on the page.

Valen, the pen name of Jerry Peterson of White Bear Lake, will sign copies of “The Price of Life” from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Once Upon a Crime, 604 S. 26th St., Mpls.

“Unicornery on Woodhouse Avenue” by Bob Garland (Gabbrolandbooks, $15.95)

Humboldt was enjoying a quiet afternoon at home in his rowhouse. While worrying about his current roster of concerns, including Buddy Prior’s disturbing radio show, the possibility that the newly-returned Tertius Prior was plotting something with his disreputable brothers Primus and Secundus, and that someone at Prior Leather was grinding up pieces of leather for who knew what disagreeable purpose, he was enjoying some peace and quiet after a morning at the office. — From “Unicornery on Woodhouse Avenue”

“Unicornery on Woodhouse Avenue” by Bob Garland (Gabbrolandbooks)

Bob Garland, who is in his 80s and lives in Mendota Heights, announced in 2015 that he was ending his delightful, four-book series featuring Humboldt Prior, beleaguered comptroller of Prior and Cousins Leatherworks, a defunct business in City-by-the-River, which certainly sounds like St. Paul.

Happily for readers, Garland had a change of heart and published “Roughhouse on Woodhouse Avenue” and his latest, “Unicornery on Woodhouse Avenue.” (Woodhouse Avenue, which overlooks the city,  is where the leather company’s founder built rowhouses for various Prior cousins to occupy.)

More readers should find this amusing series, in which Humboldt Prior tries to keep track of the monetary schemes of his greedy cousins who are supported by a trust fund. The company hasn’t done business for decades, but all the cousins have titles anyway. They spend most of their time trying to get rich by dubious means.

In “Unicornery…” there are three schemes. One cousin decides to use old, moldy leather in the warehouse to make a foot cream with ground-up hides. Three cousins, including two old defrocked pastors who preyed on the elderly, are using their old donor lists for their new venture persuading seniors they need help with winning big foreign sums. A third deal involves a small radio station that features one of the most foul-mouthed cousins.

All of these dubious “businesses” are part of Unicorn Associates, specializing in high-risk IPOs known as unicorns. Unfortunately, most of the cousins have no idea about banking or high finance, and soon Humboldt has to get to the bottom of his relatives’ schemes, at the center of which is beautiful, manipulative, money-loving Cousin Persistence, the smartest of the bunch.

With the email help of his dear cousin Julia, who’s away doing research for her government spy job, Humboldt unravels the skeins of greed.

Humboldt, a self-effacing bachelor, is a charming protagonist, his cousins are more goofy than threatening and Woodhouse Avenue is a perfect little enclave that readers can easily envision. This is a perfect series for readers who are tired of violence.

Reed: Is Liz Warren preparing for a presidential run?

Reed: Is Liz Warren preparing for a presidential run?

Exactly one decade since U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren paved the way for today’s progressive left by creating the Occupy Wall Street protest movement, the Massachusetts Democrat has been conspicuously absent from much of the national discussion this fall.

Consider the loudest voices on the left right now. U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal rallied the troops on the $3.5 trillion dollar reconciliation package. Fellow House member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez remains a ubiquitous presence on television and social media. Vermont socialist Bernie Sanders made waves for refusing to sign onto a letter condemning the protestors harassing Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema in a bathroom.

President Biden has a growing list of political problems from within his own party, but Warren, who once accused then-Sen. Biden of “being on the side of the credit companies,” has not been one of them. Until now. Warren ratcheted up her criticism of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, whose 10-year term expires in February. She has called for an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission into allegations of insider trading by top Fed officials.

Warren has gone deeply personal, blasting the “culture of corruption” at the Fed and labeling him a “dangerous man.” Her political offensive has cast a shadow over Powell’s re-nomination, and put her at odds with the White House, which reiterated its “confidence in Powell at this time.”

Of course, as with most of Warren’s villains, there is more than meets the eye. She has developed a track record of selective sanctimony, crusading against certain individuals and institutions while turning a blind eye to others — especially those in her back yard of Massachusetts — engaged in the same behavior.

For instance, Warren rails on the high costs of college and has demanded that Biden cancel $50,000 dollars of student debt. Left unsaid are the root cause of those costs: the exorbitant $50,000 annual tuition fees commanded by institutions like Harvard University — where Warren used to draw a $400,000 salary.

Warren’s love-hate relationship with defense contractors such as Raytheon — political pinatas in Democratic politics but respected employers in Massachusetts — has been well-documented.

On insider trading, Warren has been quiet about the questionable stock-selling practices of top executives at Moderna, which happens to be headquartered in Warren’s hometown of Cambridge. Last year, the biotech company’s stock soared as their COVID-19 vaccine moved through the approval process. At the same time, Moderna insiders sold as much as $1.9 billion of stock, turning a huge profit and leading Jay Clayton, then-chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, to wonder: “Why would you want to even raise the question that you were doing something that was inappropriate?”

Which brings us back to Warren’s current crusade against Jerome Powell. Banking issues have always been Warren’s political bread and butter. In 2011, when she bragged about creating “much of the intellectual foundation” for Occupy Wall Street, she became a left-wing populist star overnight. It’s possible that she, like many others, are looking at a nearly 80-year-old Biden with a 38% approval rating and concluding that there is no earthly way he can be the Democratic standard-bearer in 2024.

Should Warren decide to take the presidential plunge again, she may well try to dust off the greatest hits that made her a political star in the first place. But all the vulnerabilities and authenticity questions lie in wait as well, and they have only ripened over time.

Colin Reed is a Republican strategist and former campaign manager for Scott Brown.

NFL Notes: Bill Belichick has lost the ace up his sleeve at the negotiating table

NFL Notes: Bill Belichick has lost the ace up his sleeve at the negotiating table

Tom Brady’s New England chapter came to an end in a rather symbolic way last Sunday.

By beating his former team, Brady got a measure of closure from the Patriots and his two championship-filled decades with the team.

And while he may have thrown a curtain down on his time in Foxboro, it hasn’t totally ended. The aftershocks from Brady’s departure remain, mostly in an intangible way. He proved to be an asset for Bill Belichick not only on the field, but at the negotiating table.

With Brady now in Tampa Bay, there’s no longer a contract ceiling for Belichick. And that new dynamic already appears to be at work.

Players simply aren’t going to take less to play for the Patriots without the GOAT in the building. In the past, Belichick was always able to use Brady’s contract as a boundary. It gave him leverage.

How could anyone legitimately ask to be paid more than the guy who won multiple Super Bowls, not to mention being the greatest to ever play the position?

Case in point: Darrelle Revis, who signed as a free agent in 2014, told a great story about negotiating with Belichick. During a video interview last year with Bleacher Report on “Untold Stories,” he spoke about the Brady factor when it came to contracts and the Patriots.

“When it came to negotiation time, Bill was real stern about a number,” Revis said. “My side, we were stuck at 16 (million for a one-year deal). And his whole deal was, ‘Tom makes 14.’ And that was really it.”

The message to Revis was clear. If he wanted to be a Patriot, he wasn’t going to make more than the franchise quarterback, who carried a $14.8 million cap hit in 2014.

So how did it play out?

Revis took a $4 million pay cut from his 2013 salary with Tampa Bay, to earn $12 million during his one season — a championship season — with the Patriots.

Now, all bets are off.

Another All-Pro corner, Stephon Gilmore, certainly didn’t budge on his contract demand. He wasn’t going to stand for a pay cut, or accept anything less than his fair market value. Would he have been as vigilant to get his money if Brady was still in town, giving Belichick bargaining power when dealing with Gilmore and other star players?

Maybe not.

But since the Brady ceiling no longer exists, Belichick no longer has that ace up his sleeve. So either he’s going to have to pay prices closer to fair market value, or come away empty. Currently, linebacker Matthew Judon sits on top of the payroll, with a $13.6 million average annual salary. Tight ends Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith are next at $12.5 million, then Devin McCourty at $11.5 million, and Nelson Agholor at $11 million.

Gilmore would have likely jumped over Judon with a new deal, if he was looking for something close to what the cornerback market dictates for a player of his stature. Even though he’s 31, he was still the Patriots best defensive player, had a 2019 Defensive Player of the Year on his resume, as well as several huge plays in the Super Bowl and playoffs.

“Players always start at fair market value, but Bill was always able to use leverage with Brady’s contract, and knock that number down,” said SiriusXM NFL analyst Solomon Wilcots. “And when you think about it, Tom Brady is the greatest player to ever play the game. No player is going to argue that it shouldn’t impact their number, and they should get more than Brady.

“But in reality, the Patriots also weren’t paying Tom fair market value,” Wilcots added. “So how can any player ask to get more, when Tom’s not even getting that? That’s how that was used, and quite effectively.”

In the NFL, players typically want more money when they outplay their existing deals. Even though there might be time left on the contract, that’s usually the impetus for seeking an extension or demanding a raise.

Brady was still a Patriot when Gilmore was the NFL’s best defensive player, and believed he had outperformed his salary. The Patriots put a Band-aid on the problem by moving roughly $5 million from the final year of the deal, and advancing it toward what Gilmore made in 2020.

The Patriots simply weren’t willing to add on after that. By the same token, Gilmore wasn’t about to cave. Brady — and that leverage — had walked out the door in 2020.

At 31, Gilmore was looking for at least one more significant pay day, and after the Patriots broke the bank for him in 2017 with a five-year, $65 million deal, Belichick wasn’t going back to that well again, especially at his age.

“I know that position is important to him,” Wilcots said with respect to having a shutdown corner. “I just don’t know how much Bill is going to evolve when it comes to the financial part of paying players. I believe that’s going to be his greatest challenge.”

Belichick did go against type with a spending spree during the offseason, dishing out more than $160 million in guaranteed money to sign new players to try and rebuild his 7-9 team.

Those players didn’t sign to play with Brady. They also didn’t have to worry about an artificial ceiling during negotiations. So Judon, Henry, Smith, Agholor et al basically came for the money, and opportunity to play for Belichick.

“There’s guys who’ll take less to play with Patrick Mahomes. But if you don’t have that marquee quarterback, it’s harder,” Patriots Hall of Famer Rodney Harrison said when asked about Belichick’s new reality. “Everybody knew Tom deserved more. Even if you’re a guy like Randy Moss, you don’t mind taking less because you have a chance to play with Brady and win. So that’s definitely a factor.”

It’s going to be a factor in the present, as well as the future, until Belichick finds another player he can use for his benchmark.

Harrison, however, believes that day might not be as far off as one would imagine.

“If Mac Jones keeps on the path he’s going, and continues on the ascension he’s on, people will be willing to come and play with a good young quarterback who’s unselfish, who’s humble, and spreads the ball around,” said Harrison. “Even though they lost that with Tom, this young kid is proving quickly he could be the next one on top of that scale.”

Gilmore in the zone

Stephon Gilmore had his introductory press conference with the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, and seemed happy to be playing for his hometown team.

He still isn’t eligible to play until Week 7.

Are the Panthers a good fit for Gilmore?

SiriusXM NFL analyst Wilcots seems to think so.

While Gilmore’s specialty was shutting down an opponent’s top receiver, locking him down while playing man to man, Carolina plays a lot more zone defense.

Wilcots believes at age 31, that will ultimately benefit Gilmore.

“Here’s why I think he’ll be as good, if not better,” said Wilcots. “Nobody plays more man-to-man defense than the Patriots, except for maybe the Dolphins. Carolina plays a lot of zone.

“Stephon Gilmore can play both man and zone. He’s good at both. But aging corners, if you put them in a zone, they can play all day,” said Wilcots, a former NFL defensive back. “That’s why Richard Sherman is still playing … Stephon Gilmore will now play less man-to-man coverage than he played with the Patriots which allows him to play longer now, and allows him to be more effective. He gets to look back at the quarterback.”

Gilmore, who rooted for the Panthers as a kid, said during his introductory press conference that he loved watching Steve Smith Sr., Jake Delhomme, Stephen Davis and Julius Peppers. His favorite memory was when Carolina reached the Super Bowl to play against the Patriots during the 2003 season.

“It’s a place that I always wanted to play,” said Gilmore. “Looking at the team and what they got, the potential. You have to put in a lot of hard work to get to where you want to go, but for sure it was a great opportunity to come here.”

Harrison’s critique

Speaking further with Rodney Harrison about the loss to the Bucs last week, he thought Belichick should have gone for it, fourth-and-3 with 59 seconds left. First, he didn’t think Nick Folk would make the 56-yard kick in the rainy conditions. Second, he thought it was a good chance to get more intel on rookie Mac Jones.

“You get a chance to see what he can do under those extreme conditions,” said Harrison. “If you really wanna see what you got, see if he can make that fourth-and-3.”

Harrison, however, was encouraged by the performance of the defense.

“I thought coming off this game, there should really be a lot of positives,” said Harrison. “I think even though they lost, they win because you walk away from that game defensively, and you say, ‘You know what? We can stand up to pretty much anybody.’ When they focus on doing things right, and taking care of their responsibilities, they can play with anybody. But it has to be week in and week out. They can’t take a week off. But they should build a lot of confidence from the way they played, and they should continue to grow.”

The trouble areas?

The defense doesn’t get totally off the hook. Harrison said the linebackers are slow, especially when compared to Tampa Bay’s Devin White and Lavonte David. And, he doesn’t like how the front gets pushed around.

“They gotta get tougher at the defensive line,” he said. “Those dudes get pushed around more than I’m used to seeing.”

Offensively, Harrison thinks it’s trouble if the Patriots can’t get the run game going.

“They have to try and find a way to run the football,” said Harrison. “It can’t be Mac dropping back 40 times every game. They have to re-establish that identity.”

Brady still hates Giants

With his win over the Patriots last Sunday, Tom Brady joined Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and Drew Brees as the only quarterbacks to beat all 32 teams.

During his SiriusXM podcast Monday night, Brady was asked by host Jim Gray what team he enjoyed beating the most, and which one he enjoyed the least?

His answers were fairly obvious.

“The team I would love to beat the most is the Giants, there’s no doubt about that, because they’ve taken away some really, you know, I’ve always joked with Eli (Manning) but, yeah, and I think he likes that I bring it up all the time. So to bring it up again, I do not like losing to those guys, so when we beat them I love that,” said Brady. “And the team I like to beat the least is obviously the Patriots. Again, those are my guys, man. Those are the other warriors that I went to battle with for so long. I’ve had a lot of battles over the years with different teams, there’s a lot of mutual respect in pro sports, but glad I’m through with the one last night.”

The Giants, of course, spoiled the Patriots perfect season in 2007, winning in that Super Bowl. And for good measure, the Giants beat them again four years later in the Super Bowl.

Former Patriots fullback James Develin ready to run Boston Marathon, ‘the Super Bowl of marathons’

Former Patriots fullback James Develin ready to run Boston Marathon, ‘the Super Bowl of marathons’

Editor’s note: Steve Hewitt and James Develin are both running the Boston Marathon as charity runners for the Joe Andruzzi Foundation.

James Develin was on injured reserve during the 2019 season when he started having this crazy thought that had already been on his mind.

The Patriots fullback — all 6-foot-3, 255 pounds of him — wanted to run the Boston Marathon.

During that period, Develin and David Andrews were both on IR and waking up early to train at Edge Performance Systems in Foxboro. Develin turned to his teammate and one of the trainers at EPS to ask them what they thought of the possibility of him running those iconic 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boylston Street.

They weren’t so convinced. Fullbacks aren’t exactly known for running marathons.

“You’re 255,” they told him. “That’s a lot of pounding on your joints.”

Develin made a mental note of that. Undrafted out of Brown, the fullback became a core member of the Patriots and a three-time Super Bowl champion. He was used to being doubted.

“Doubt has always driven me through my football career,” Develin said.

After a career of paving the way for Patriots runners, now he’s taking the lead. Develin, who retired from football in 2020, is finally going to scratch that itch Monday, when he runs the historic Boston Marathon — the 125th installment, and first ever in October — as he represents the Joe Andruzzi Foundation, the organization inspired by the former Patriots offensive lineman that provides supports for cancer patients and their families across New England.

Develin has always been interested in running. When he was younger, he cross-trained with boxing, which set a foundation for distance running. He wasn’t going long miles like he has during marathon training and will on Monday, but he loved it.

“I got a little bit of a mental thing out of it,” Develin said. “It was all about just embracing the suck, because nobody likes to run, especially over a mile.”

It was actually in 2018 when the idea of running Boston first became a possibility to Develin. Former Patriots offensive lineman Ryan Wendell was in town with Andruzzi, and the they were catching up in the weight room at Gillette Stadium when Wendell told him he was running the Boston Marathon, also for Andruzzi’s foundation.

Develin was inspired. As a similarly built football player — a “human battering ram,” he described himself — it wasn’t really something that he had thought about.

“He was an offensive lineman so you never really think an o-lineman can put in 26.2, but he did it,” Develin said. “I just admired that honestly. … You just don’t associate big football players with running that kind of distance, but he was embracing the challenge and so I really respected that. It made an impact on me. …

“I was like, ‘You know what, that would be a really cool challenge to try to take on after I’m done playing.’”

Develin retired in April 2020 and continued to train and lift weights, but it eventually got monotonous without any goals to reach for, especially in the midst of a pandemic.

“I just started thinking, I gotta do something to spark things a little bit,” Develin said.

He turned to running. One mile turned to two, eventually to 10, and one Saturday morning, he woke up and ran a half marathon on his own. He loved the mental and physical challenge it provided.

When Develin saw the news earlier this year that the Boston Marathon was being pushed back from its traditional April date to Oct. 11, he reached out to Andruzzi about getting a spot on his Boston Marathon team. It wasn’t long before he was accepted.

Develin said he’s even surprised himself with training, which hasn’t been easy. Not only is he training for his first marathon, but he also moved this summer. And with four kids, he had to get creative with his time management. He even brought them on some of his shorter runs, with strollers and shoulder straps helping the cause.

“It’s been really cool,” Develin said. “That’s the other thing, trying to set an example for them because that was out of my comfort zone, But like I said before, just embracing the challenge and go to work every day trying to accomplish this goal, I have to do it the right way for my kids and set the example.”

Develin has never been to the Boston Marathon, but as a Brown grad and with the Patriots for eight seasons, he’s well aware of what it means. And he’s taking it just as seriously as any of the big championship games he played in for the Patriots.

“I’ve been given a unique platform to be involved in something like this,” Develin said. “It’s honestly like the Super Bowl of marathons, so I jumped at that opportunity. I’m really just looking forward to being a part of this. It’s something I’ve never done, but why not try to start at the top?”

Editorial: COVID battle’s unexpected healthy outcomes

Editorial: COVID battle’s unexpected healthy outcomes

It may not seem possible that a pandemic that has taken more than 700,000 U.S. lives could provide some healthy byproducts, but the glass-half-full crowd could point to a few encouraging developments.

Precautions taken to fight COVID-19, including wearing masks and distancing, likely have contributed to the steep decline in domestic flu cases, according to experts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that it had logged just 1,316 positive flu cases in its surveillance network from September 2020 to the end of January 2021. During that same period the previous year, the CDC had recorded nearly 130,000 cases.

Stephen Kissler, a research fellow in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said in a February 11, 2021, Vox article that while more people received a flu vaccine this year, the sharp drop in cases was probably largely driven by mask-wearing and social distancing. Kissler suggested that wearing masks could be an effective way of helping control future flu outbreaks.

Neutralizing the flu isn’t the only positive reaction to the coronavirus.

Teen vaping plummeted this year, when COVID forced most students to learn remotely, according to a government report released last week.

U.S. health officials urged caution in interpreting the numbers, collected by using an online questionnaire for the first time. But outside experts believe in the validity of the big drop in electronic-cigarette use, which makes sense given the social nature of vaping.

“They found a dramatic drop from last year and it’s hard to imagine that doesn’t represent a real decrease in use among high-school and middle-school students,” Dr. Nancy Rigotti of Harvard University — who was not involved in the research — told the Associated Press.

In the national survey, 11% of high school-students and less than 3% of middle-schoolers said they used e-cigarettes and other vaping products recently, the Food and Drug Administration and CDC reported.

That’s a roughly 40% drop from last year, when nearly 20% of high school students and 5% of middle schoolers said they’d recently vaped.

If this year’s numbers hold up, it would be the second big drop in a row, from a peak of 28% for high-schoolers in 2019.

That’s because even before the pandemic, new mandates helped curb underage use of e-cigarettes. In late 2019, a new federal law raised the purchase age for all tobacco and vaping products from 18 to 21. Shortly thereafter, the FDA banned nearly all flavors from small, cartridge-based e-cigarettes, the catalyst for the teen vaping craze.

Those measures, combined with a rash of highly publicized vaping-related illnesses and deaths caused by a filler in black-market vaping liquids that contained THC, had a cumulative effect on demand.

Previous surveys were conducted solely in classrooms, while the most recent polling contained responses from students both at home and in school.

For months, tobacco experts have speculated about the potential effect of school closures on vaping, given most teens vape with their friends and get e-cigarettes from their peers.

Dr. Rigotti said the decline will have to be confirmed by other surveys due out later this year. It’s also hard to predict whether vaping could rebound now that most schools have returned to in-person classes.

No collateral health benefits can compensate for this country’s 700,000-plus deaths and nearly 44 million COVID cases, but coronavirus-created changes in behavior — as these flu and vaping statistics suggest — could emerge as the silver lining in this COVID cloud.

According to the official website, it is best for people on the verge of aging, where eye health starts to decline, and there are numerous risks coming next. But how to be sure which supplement is beneficial for you, and what makes VisiShield a better choice to make?

Eyes are a sensitive part of the body, used almost all the time, except when sleeping. For an organ that is continuously working and is exposed to so many risk factors such as light, screens, toxins, radiations, and others, it is normal to feel strain in the eyes. People often choose to ignore this strain, assuming it is related to workload or from watching too much TV, whereas it is typically an early sign of age-related eyesight loss, especially in middle-aged people. Doing nothing about these issues can make them worse over time, and before you know it, it can be too late to reverse the damage. At that point, doctors often recommend surgery that is painful and expensive. Instead, think about how you can start taking care of your eyes and save yourself from preventable damage today.

Dietary and lifestyle changes can lower your risk, but using a supplement, such as VisiShield, can significantly help maintain eye health. VisiShield comes in an easy-to-use capsular form, made from natural ingredients with no artificial or synthetic ingredients added. If you have never tried an eye health supplement before, it’s about time you start considering one. Keep reading this VisiShield review to know how it works and what people are saying about it.

What is VisiShield?

VisiShield is an eye health-boosting formula that is created for adult users. It is designed to fill the nutritional deficiencies that repair the stem cells and save from any damage to the Neural Progenitor Cells (NPC) that are a part of eye structure. By structure, these NPC cells are nerves that build a connection between the brain and eyes. Once this connection is strong, the brain to eye coordination has improved and eyesight issues are fixed.

This sounds simple, but most eye health supplements don’t offer this, making VisiShield a better alternative than many. It follows a straight path, using natural ingredients, and for this reason, there are no side effects attached to it. The supplement form makes VisiShield easier to use than some alternatives. It comes in a premium plastic bottle with 60 easy-to-swallow capsules providing a month’s supply of our eye health-boosting formula.

Another unique thing about VisiShield is that its ingredients have scientifically proven benefits for the eyes. Search lutein and zeaxanthin to see how these two ingredients contained in our product help to restore eyesight. Our formula does not require you to follow a special diet or exercise, but it is always a good idea to make healthy lifestyle choices.

How Does VisiShield Help?

VisiShield is designed on the simple idea of using stem cells to rejuvenate eye structure and function. The human body contains stem cells that typically repair all the damages in the body; they are produced in the bone marrow and can travel to anywhere they are needed. The body can change these stem cells to red blood cells or white blood cells, whichever are needed to repair the damage. So having this natural repair mechanism is bliss, and the body needs a sufficient supply of them.

Aging affects all body functions, including stem cell production. You may notice that the damage repair is affected during the late middle ages, and eventually, the body stops fixing these issues and needs medical treatment, including medicines and surgeries to repair this damage. It is because the stem cells are limited, and they may not be performing their function well. VisiShield offers certain nutrients to the body that restore stem cell production, release and use, especially for the eyes.

With age, the nerve cells bringing messages from eye to brain are affected, and vision starts to decline, and there is no stem cell help offered by the body. If ignored, it could lead to a complete eyesight loss. However, if the stem cells are available to help and the repair mechanism starts early, there are high chances the eye health can be restored. The ingredients in VisiShield offer this restoration, repair, and rejuvenation, saving the eyes from common issues. As a result, the body maintains perfect eye health despite aging.

It takes a few weeks to experience changes in eye health with VisiShield pills. For some people, it can take three to six months. If combined with a healthy diet and exercise, these results may show up earlier, but you can use the supplement for as long as you want. There are no long-term side effects linked to VisiShield.

Ingredients Inside VisiShield Formula

All the benefits associated with the VisiShield supplement are because of its ingredients. There are ten ingredients inside, each with proven health benefits for stem cells and eye health. You will see a variety in these ingredients, even some names that you never thought were beneficial for your eye health. But they all have one thing in common: improving eye health and saving from an age-related decline. They also offer benefits to the other functions of the body, including immunity, cognitive functions, and digestion.

According to the official website, these ingredients are combined under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in a contamination-free environment. There are no chances there is any harmful ingredient or contaminant added during the making and packaging. The final product is tested through a third-party laboratory for the benefits and safety to ensure it offers nothing but healing effects. All the orders are dispatched from the company’s warehouse to the customer’s address, so the chances of mishandling and storage are reduced to zero.

Here are details on all VisiShield ingredients and their benefits for the body.

  • Spirulina: the first name in VisiShield ingredients is spirulina, an ingredient with a high amount of antioxidative and anti-inflammatory benefits to offer. There is plenty of evidence suggesting its role in nerve functions, stem cells production, and repair. It also improves a person’s cholesterol profile, helping the body to metabolize all extra fat and save the heart from diseases.
  • Lutein: next in VisiShield is lutein that offers exclusive benefits for the eyes. It is often added to eye-health supplements because of its proven benefits to prevent age-related macular degeneration. It provides antioxidants that lower oxidative stress, save the macula and retina of the eye, and clear it from toxins.
  • Zeaxanthin: another ingredient that goes well with lutein is zeaxanthin, which protects the eyes from external threats. It also offers amazing benefits to the skin, and it heals if damaged. Some studies reveal zeaxanthin can save from cataract formation if taken during an early stage.
  • Astaxanthin: VisiShield also contains astaxanthin that relieves inflammation and toxin damage inside the body. It also maintains high energy levels, lowers stress, and keeps the body calm and relaxed.
  • L-carnitine: often associated with metabolic benefits, this VisiShield ingredient helps maintain a healthy weight without any additional effort. It also makes the body active and energetic and helps pass through the hectic day ahead.
  • Bladderwrack: inside the VisiShield formula, bladderwrack works as a hormonal balancer. It offers iodine to the body that regulates thyroid hormones. For this reason, it also provides metabolic, cognitive, and neurological benefits to the body.
  • Grape Seed Extract: grapes are a rich source of antioxidants, and they can supercharge immunity through the antioxidants inside them. These antioxidants clear the body from toxins, inflammation, byproducts, cellular waste, and other compounds that hinder the functions of major body organs. Also, it adds collagen to the body that improves bone health and the appearance of the skin.
  • Others: Blueberry Extract, Vitamin D, Resveratrol

What To Expect From VisiShield?

Regular use of VisiShield pills results in improved eyesight, body function, and immunity. Here is how it helps in each of these functions.

  1. VisiShield and Eyesight

The most noticeable benefit of VisiShield is to make changes in eye health, and these changes are experienced within a couple of weeks. It is no surprise that ingredients inside this supplement have proven benefits for eye health, plus they are plant-based; so there is no allergic reaction or side effect expected from them.

  1. VisiShield And Other Body Functions

VisiShield offers antioxidants to the body that are responsible for many body functions. They can cleanse the body and remove toxins, free radicals, and waste materials that otherwise affect the working of visceral organs. Some of them lower oxidative stress and improve the effects of stem cells; as a result, the body functions run smoothly.

  1. VisiShield And Immunity

All these nutrients also affect immunity and improve it to a level that the body is protected from all threats. It leaves little chance for the pathogens to attack and invade. Moreover, a better immunity means you will be able to live a better, disease-free life despite aging.

These effects show up after regular use of VisiShield pills for a few months. If you skip doses, misuse them or do not follow them seriously, the effects could delay and take a long time to show up. For better results, improve your diet and fix the habits that add extra burden to the eyes, such as screen time. Also, fix your sleeping routine and allow the body to rest for at least six to eight hours per night.

Is VisiShield Safe?

VisiShield is a herbal dietary blend with enormous health benefits. These ingredients have been tested through independent studies already and are chosen for their safe nature. Plus, there are no additional ingredients, toxins, hormones, or unnecessary fillers, further reducing the chances of side effects. It is rare for any of its ingredients to go wrong or cause a side effect, but some users may experience headaches, nausea, or sleeping irritability at first.

The website clearly states that VisiShield is suitable for adult users only. It is not recommended for children, even if they have weak eyesight. The ingredients are added as per the body requirements of an adult user; therefore, their values are too much for a younger body. It is also not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, but they can use it after consulting with their doctor. People with underlying health issues and any daily medications should also avoid using a supplement on their own.

Although dietary supplements, especially herbal blends, are helpful for all users, they should never be used without safety evaluation first. Talk to a doctor if you are not sure about using a supplement, and only use it if you are confident.

Usage Guideline For VisiShield Pills

There is no specific way to use this supplement, and it is used just like all other oral medications and supplements. The daily dosage is two capsules taken with water, preferably in the morning, before breakfast. You may also take it any time later, but its effects are better when used on an empty stomach.

Following dosage, the guideline is necessary as overdosing does not bring any good. In fact, it can cause some severe side effects that no one wants. Also, do not use this supplement if you are already taking any daily medication, including prescription and non-prescription pills.

The new users may find a bit of digestive discomfort at the start, but that vanishes within hours without treatment. If two capsules sound like a higher dose, one can even start from one capsule and increase to two capsules a day in later weeks. In all cases, avoid taking the supplement with food, alcohol, caffeine, and any medicine. Individual results may vary, but all users will see some changes in their health within three to six months of regular use.

VisiShield Review: Frequently Asked Questions (Faqs)

Read the following questions and answers on VisiShield.

Is VisiShield available at Amazon?

Despite being sold online, VisiShield is not available at Amazon, eBay, or any other website. It can only be purchased through the official website, and buying it from random sellers with no information on authenticity is not the best decision. Besides, buying from the official website allows you to enjoy discounts, promotions and other offers that independent sellers never offer. So never choose any source over the official website.

When should you expect VisiShield results?

There is no standard time to see the benefits of VisiShield, but most people start noticing changes in their health within two to three weeks of usage. These initial changes include better vision, no blurry vision, less strain, and clarity. Some people may take a longer time to show the results as the ingredients work differently for everyone. A complete eye health transformation may take up to six months or more, depending upon the damage and medical history of the user.

Where is VisiShield made?

VisiShield is a US-made product that is manufactured under the highest quality standards and protocols. The manufacturing facility uses the latest machinery, and the process takes place under the professionals. Nothing about it seems like a question mark on the quality or safety. For this reason, the risks of side effects with this product are minimal.

Who should never use VisiShield pills?

VisiShield is safe for everyone, but there are a few cases where its usage may not be suitable. For example, it is not recommended for underage children, pregnant and breastfeeding women. It is also not suitable if the person is already diagnosed with an eye disease and taking medications as prescribed by a doctor. Dietary supplements are not an alternative to medicines, and they should not be used along with medicines unless recommended by a doctor.

Can you take VisiShield if your eyesight is perfect?

VisiShield is a rich source of nutrients required for maintaining good health. It is just like taking a multivitamin supplement that many people do. It is even helpful for the body if there are no visible signs of eye damage. The role played by its ingredients is protective, which means they will save the body from potential damages. They do not treat any medical issues, so you can also use them without any visible issues in eyesight.

Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ Has Found Its Star and Release Date
New details on Christopher Nolan’s J. Robert Oppenheimer movie with Universal. Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images

In a major coup, it was announced in September that Universal had won the bidding war for Christopher Nolan’s next film about J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was instrumental in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. Now, we can report when fans can expect the film to arrive in theaters and who will play the title role.

Universal Pictures and Nolan’s production company Syncopy announced today that the filmmaker’s next film will be titled Oppenheimer. The film is an IMAX-shot thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it. Universal Pictures will distribute Oppenheimer theatrically worldwide and will release the film in North American theaters on Friday, July 21, 2023. Warner Bros., Nolan’s long time home prior to uniting with Universal, currently has Coyote vs. Acme scheduled for release that day.

Written and directed by Nolan and produced by Emma Thomas, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Nolan, the film stars Cillian Murphy (Peaky Blinders, Inception, The Dark Knight trilogy, A Quiet Place Part II) as J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin who passed away this week.

The film will begin production in early 2022. It will be shot on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film for the highest image quality and reunited Nolan with some of his frequent collaborators, including producer Charles Roven (The Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel, director of photography Hoyte Van Hoytenna (TenetDunkirkInterstellar), editor Jennifer Lame (TenetMarriage StoryHereditary) and composer Ludwig Göransson (Tenet, Black Panther, Creed).

“Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas’ films have shattered the limits of what cinematic storytelling can achieve,” said Universal Filmed Entertainment Group Chairman, Donna Langley. “We are thrilled to be working alongside them on this exceptional and extraordinary project and are grateful for their shared passion and commitment to the theatrical experience.”

Nolan’s films have earned more than $5 billion at the global box office and have been awarded 11 Oscars and 36 nominations, including two Best Picture nominations. Oppenheimer will be his first film released by Universal Pictures.

A Recently Uncovered Painting Could Potentially Be a Caravaggio

A Recently Uncovered Painting Could Potentially Be a Caravaggio

In March of this year, an artwork popped up at an auction house in Madrid that Maria Cristina Terzaghi, a professor at the Italian university Roma Tre, almost immediately clocked as a painting with characteristics that could make it an authentic Caravaggio. After extensive examination of the painting and communicating with other experts, Terzaghi has made the judgement that the painting is indeed a previously undiscovered Caravaggio; if the determination is solidified as true, the painting, which is entitled The Crowning of Thorns, could end up being worth over $100 million. The painting depicts Pontius Pilate alongside Jesus, who’s wearing a crown of thorns.

Initially, the painting that could be a Caravaggio had showed up at auction listed for only approximately $1,800. But once other scholars and officials became alerted to the canvas’s potential provenance, financial offers began to soar far beyond that extremely low price. Nevertheless, there are many steps that still have to be executed if the potential Caravaggio is found to be authentic. Paintings by Caravaggio are ultimately “probably the most difficult to recognize,” Eric Turquin, an authenticator of another painting by Caravaggio, told the Wall Street Journal.

Similarly, a professor at Iona College in in New Rochelle, New York recently found a painting in a church close by to campus that he immediately identified as an Italian Baroque painting. Using his professional connections in the field of art history, Ruggio had some of his colleagues assist him in determining that the canvas was one in a series of paintings made by Dandini in the 1630s. Holy Family with the Infant St. John, is a painting that features beautifully rendered Biblical figures, and the discovery of the painting itself is novel enough to buoy even the most passive art fan.
