The Benefits of Wearing a Moisturizer for Combination Skin

Your cheeks are most likely dry, tight and in need of some intense moisture but your forehead, nose and chin are probably oily with enlarged pores and a blemish or two. So, how do you make your whole face happy without applying two products? Wear a moisturizer that has been specifically designed for you.

Why do You Have Combination Skin?

When the sebaceous glands in specific areas of your face become overactive, you end up with combination skin. Unfortunately, this causes your T-zone to be extremely prone to blackheads, whiteheads and acne breakouts.

You will probably never exactly be able to pinpoint the cause of your combination skin. It can be a result of many influences including improper diet and lifestyle choices, lack of sleep or exercise, stress, anxiety and poor health. Thankfully, regardless of the cause of your skin being the way it is, there are products such as Shiseido Pureness Mattifying Moisturizer Oil-Free that will effectively nourish your skin without clogging your pores.

Daily Care

It is essential that you only apply a moisturizer to a freshly washed face. As a side note, always choose a gentle cleanser. You may assume you need a harsh product to eliminate oil but all you are doing is robbing your skin of oils so it feels as though it needs to produce twice as much to compensate.

After you wash your face, gently pat dry with a clean towel. Apply your moisturizer beginning at the neck and working upward. You never want to start at your forehead and use downward motions! You may feel the urge to skip your T-zone and apply only to your cheeks but this is not a wise decision. Most combination skin products are oil-free so you don’t have to worry about them making your skin more oily.

Additionally, if you do have a problem with your T-zone becoming ridiculously shiny during the day, a product such as Billy Jealousy Combination Code Face Moisturizer will remedy that problem for you. This is a remarkable moisturizer for combination skin that not only nourishes, protects and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, it also provides you with a matte finish all day long whether you wear makeup over it or not.

Will My Oily Skin Ever Go Away?

The big question people with oily skin, or any type of skin problem, will always want to know is: Will it ever go away?

Oily skin, the result of overactive sebaceous glands (thus producing too much oil, or sebum), will always vary from person to person. The causes behind it are all very different, and these causes may often be the answer to whether or not you will always be stuck with oily skin.

Some people have chronically oily skin, and there is not much they can do about it. It is in their genetics to have sebaceous glands that continuously produce oil, thus leading them to have many, many years of dealing with oily skin and the problems it can bring, such as acne, dull appearance, shiny skin, and skin thickness.

Your best bet, in the case that you do have chronically oily skin, is to see a dermatologist and get the best possible products to help tame it. If you are going to have it for an extremely long time, you might as well go all out in treating it, taking the best care of your skin as you can, and checking up with your dermatologist regularly to see about your progress and to find out about any new possibilities in the area of oily skin relief.

Most people that have oily skin, however, do not have it chronically. Instead, oily skin crops up due to sudden hormonal changes. The most common reason for oily skin falls on the shoulders of teenagers who are going through puberty. Dealing with oily skin can last several years, as well as the frustration of acne outbreaks, but you can at least live with the thought that your oily skin will not last forever, certainly not far into your adult life.

Because of the hormonal fluctuations people go through during puberty, the sebaceous glands act up and produce more sebum than is necessary, leading to the aforementioned problems. But with good care and a decent amount of patience (avoid stress whenever possible!), you can lessen the problems of oily skin and be able to relax once your hormones have gone back to a less rambunctious state and freed your skin from excess oil.

There are also much shorter terms in which you may find a sudden oily skin problem. Women who are pregnant, start taking birth control, or go through other areas in life that can affect their hormone levels may find resulting oily skin and possibly acne breakouts. But no worries; like with puberty, once your hormones have gone back to normal, your oily skin should clear up.

Issues such as stress, exercise, and eating right may contribute to temporary dealings with oily skin. Stress has been a major link in sebum production and the appearance of acne, so stressing less may lead you to a more oil free and acne free life. Exercise is good for you, both inside and out, and can help clear up skin. Sitting around doing nothing is unhealthy, and while it will not be the cause of oily skin, it will do nothing to aid it. The same can be said for a good diet.

Eating junk food such as sweets and salty snacks are not directly related to sebum overproduction, but an improved diet with healthy fruits, vegetables, and other foods may help, as it will help your body overall in terms of nutrition and necessary vitamins and minerals.

The best you can do for your oily skin is to continue to cleanse, exfoliate, use toner, and blot as necessary throughout the day, especially if you have already found a routine that works for you. If you have yet to find a good routine and your oily skin is still a nuisance to you, then you should probably begin looking into a different skin care routine or question the effectiveness of some of your products.

Ask questions of others with oily skin to compare information or ask your dermatologist for possible solutions. Even if you have oily skin for a short time, knowing how to care for it can help you tone it down and have more patience as you wait for it to go away.

Bat-Wings: The Dreaded Hanging Arm Skin After WLS

Gastric-bypass surgery is only the first step many morbidly obese patients take in their total body make overs. One residue of massive weight loss is the dreaded “bat-wings”. You know what I’m talking about – that upper arm skin which hangs like bat wings if you spread your arms wide ready for flight. Wave your hand and the bat-wing waves too. For some after massive weight loss there is so much skin it’s difficult to find shirts with sleeves that fit, and worse, it’s embarrassing to wear sleeveless shirts.

What to do?

The first line of defense is to do weight or strength training during the phase of rapid weight loss. Many patients report satisfactory skin shrinkage of the upper arms when they’ve incorporated light exercise during weight loss. Bicep curls and tricep pulldowns are the best exercises for firming upper arms. Arm training takes minimal equipment (2 light dumbbells 3-5 lbs each) and limited space. It should be noted, the younger the patient and the fewer times they’ve seen significant weight change, the better chance they have of toning and shaping their arms with exercise. Now, that doesn’t let older patients off the hook for doing exercise – it just gives a bit more encouragement for younger people who undergo weight loss surgery.

The next, but not very plausible option is liposuction. Lipo is only appropriate when there is a lot of fat and the skin is tight. The lipo sucks out the fat and allows the skin to shrink. This isn’t plausible for most WLS patients because they’ve already lost the fat leaving an empty balloon of upper arm skin.

The last resort is the $5,000 arm lift called brachioplasty Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure that eliminates excess skin from the upper arm.

Incisions and Scars in Arm Lift

Scars are the greatest drawback of this operation. They will extend from the armpit to the elbow, along the inside of the arm. This operation exchanges one cosmetic problem (loose skin) for another (scars). In general, those with very loose saggy skin are most likely to find this exchange worthwhile. Those with a small amount of looseness will probably not want the scars.

Eyewear Styles That Will Totally Flatter Your Face Type

Size doesn’t matter! But shape does. So, the next time you’re choosing an eyewear for yourself, make sure it complements the beautiful contours of your face. While there is a range of the most versatile eyewear online, it’s always better to keep your face shape in mind before purchasing. Uh-oh! Never had the time check what’s your face shape? Sweat not! Know your face shape in these three easy ways:

  • 1. Stand Straight in front of a mirror.
  • 2. Take a Lipstick and outline your face on the mirror.
  • 3. The outline is your face shape!
  • Now that you know what your face shape is, we’re here with a quick guide on how to choose eyewear that truly flatters your face:

There’s no frame shape that won’t suit an oval face. So if you have one, you’re blessed! Whether it’s a pair of barely there rimless eyeglasses or whether it’s a pair of those oversized eyeglasses, everything is tailor-made for you. All you have to do is just pick what appeals to your style sensibilities.

    Our recommendation:

  • Go for broad frames, especially when you are choosing everyday eyeglasses. Go for a nice wayfarer design to get the perfect cubicle to club look.
  • Bold frames can be your buddies! Go for those embellished cat eye glasses or the unisex basic hued club master sunglasses. They’re just what you need while flaunting the perfect ‘pop’ look.
  • Even the slim rim aviator sunglasses will suit your face. They’ll accentuate the curvy contours of your face. Go for the dusty gold ones to make sure you’re updated with what’s trending in the aviator world.
  • Heart

Heart shaped faces are lovely (like literally!) Wide forehead and high cheekbones can totally work in your favour. You have a ton of eyeglasses & sunglasses to complement the contours. The key is to choose frames that are wider than your forehead.

    Our recommendation:

  • Rectangle frames are your go-to frames. Pick the acetate one if you are looking for something light yet stylish.
  • Your accessory collection should totally have a pair of wide bottomed wayfarer sunglasses. Own a pair of reflector wayfarer Googles if you hit the beach quite often.
  • You can also go for those round frames in case you want to highlight other features of your face apart from the cheekbones.
  • Square

Those angles are angels! (Yes we got the spelling right!) Your angular face has curves right where they should be. You can totally experiment with your eyeglasses! From the curvy frames to the round frames, you have a lot to choose from.

    Our recommendation:

  • Pick those cool wayfarer eyewear if you’re all up for some ‘square on square’ style. If you think it will look odd, think again! You can go for premium acetate eyeglasses in wayfarer style for an everyday upbeat look.
  • You can also pick thin steel eyeglasses to flaunt the angular features of your face. Go for the super sassy aviators whenever you’re heading out.

Now to the most conscious people! Round faced people always worry about what hairstyle will suit them and of course, what eyewear will suit them. While you’ve chosen to let your hair down, you can also choose to play with various frame shapes.

    Our recommendation:

  • Just like square on square, round on round combo is also quite fun. It’s a good idea to invest in those round sunglasses when you have a lovely round face to complement them.
  • You can also go nerdy in broad rectangular eyeglasses. Go for basic blue or black colours if you want your features to stand out.
  • You can also experiment with clear sunglasses. Not only are they super trendy but they come in curvy square shape that suits a round face perfectly.
  • Don’t forget to pick the best lenses while choosing your eyeglasses. For sunglasses, go for reflectors if you’re always by the sea or just plain tinted sunglasses if you’re just out for city strolls. So, are you ready to update your eyewear?

Select Chemical Free Products For Your Skin

Did you know that many of your skincare products contain harsh chemicals that actually damage your skin? Although many products say “natural” the contents are not natural. However, understanding the carcinogenic nature of chemicals in skin care products could change this behavior. Here are a few of the top ingredients that should be avoided in skin care products:

    Perfumes and Fragrances

Just because it smells good doesn’t mean that it is good for your skin. Most fragrances are synthetic origin, many toxic or carcinogenic (causing or contributing to cancer). Fragrances affect the central nervous system and cause depression, hyperactivity, irritability, and other behavioral changes. The label of “Fragrances” can mean a multitude of synthetic and toxic chemicals. When looking for something that smells good, make sure it’s scented by essential oils.

    Alkylphenol Ethoxylates

This chemical is found to reduce sperm cell count in animals and is currently under review by the EPA.

This is well known as petroleum jelly and is a mineral oil used in various cosmetics. It has no nutrient value for the skin and can interfere with the body’s own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dryness and chapping. Companies produce petrolatum because it is super cheap.

    Synthetic Coloring –FD&C Food Coloring

Color makes things look good but they may not be good for the skin. The colors are often synthetic colors made from coal tar, containing heavy metal salts that deposit toxins onto the skin, causing skin sensitivity and irritation. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No. 6. Many synthetic colors can be carcinogenic.

    Coal Tar

This is a carcinogen that is prohibited for us in cosmetics in the European Union. It is found in dandruff shampoos, hair dyes, and anti-itch creams.

This chemical makes shaving cream smooth, but research links it to neuro-toxicity and neuro-developmental disorders, as well as to asthma and allergies. It is also found in nail polish, perfume, and hair spray.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

This is found in things that foam. They are known to cause inflammation of the skin.

DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (monoethanolamine), & TEA (triethanolamine)

These hormone-disrupting chemicals are already restricted in Europe due to known carcinogenic effects. They were sited for causing cancer.

Causes cancer and is noted by the EPA as a pesticide.

Propylene Glycol (PG) & Butylene Glycol

These are petroleum plastics that easily go through the skin and may weaken protein and cellular structure.

    Mineral Oil (i.e. Baby Oil)

This one ingredient is so common in everyday skin care products. It stops the body from being able to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders. It slows down skin function and cell development. Stop putting this on our babies!

Overall as consumers we should read labels carefully. Don’t buy it because is smells good or looks good. Read what “good” means to your body and then make a healthy choice of a quality product that maintains the skin that you deserve. Promote a healthier and resilient appearance naturally. It is time that you take a more active role in skin health and show interest in investing in the skin they are in. Furthermore, magazines should take a more active role in the education and advertisement of natural products that promote health outside as well as inside of the body.

A daily regiment for cleansing and moisturizing, and a weekly regiment for exfoliating is essential to healthy skin in everyone.

The author is the owner of Mikios Natural Body Scrub, a company that makes 100% natural salt body scrubs that exfoliate and moisturize skin. The owner believes that companies and consumers are mutually responsible for reducing exposure to chemicals and toxic substances. While companies can stop producing them by offering alternative ingredients, consumers can stop purchasing them and require healthier products.

The Beauty of the Female Bond

I recently witnessed the dissolution of a friendship between two women who had been extremely close. It was interesting to see the two diverse paths each decided to take in regards to the healing of this tragic event. The one woman chose to do everything in her power to create havoc in the life of the other. She used vengeful tactics to express her anger and hurt, which included speaking badly of her former friend in their tight knit community. In the end, this behavior backfired on her. The second woman took a very different approach. It started with forgiveness. She reached out to the other woman, trying to mend the misunderstanding. When that didn’t work, she turned to the network of other women in her life, letting them swaddle her with their love and support. It was beautiful to witness such companionship amongst women and to see the bonds tighten because of honesty and humility.

Female friendships can be complex. When we are young, we envy our friends, we covet their possessions and sometimes, even their boyfriends. We aren’t always taught the importance of being happy for one another so when we reach adulthood, these intricate insecurities travel with us. I remember when I was in my early twenties and my best friend had it all, or so I thought. She had a dream job working for a network television company and she had boyfriend after boyfriend while I couldn’t even get a date. In hindsight, I know I should have been happy for her, but I wasn’t. She possessed all the things I thought I wanted in my life and I was jealous. I couldn’t find it in my heart to support her, and I was always putting her down, mirroring my own lack of confidence onto her. In the end, I believe this led to the disintegration of our friendship. It was a difficult life lesson for me since deep down, I loved her very much and was grief stricken over this loss. After that, I decided to change my rapport with women.

Throughout history, women have bonded together during difficult times. When the men were off to war, the wives and widows turned to each other for a sense of community and family. Scarlet O’Haras were a rarity. For the most part, the bond of female friendships was resilient, and this was prevalent in all cultures around the world. So then, how did we become our own worst enemies?

We live in a culture that glamorizes negative relations between women. Reality shows profit from promoting competition and conflict, bringing out the ugliness inside of the participants. We even have the gall to call these people celebrities, as though we should celebrate this type of behavior.

A study at the University of Michigan focused on the importance of female friendships. In a news release, Stephanie Brown, the lead author of the paper found that “Most of the hormones involved in bonding and helping behavior lead to reductions in stress and anxiety.” During a study at UCLA, Dr. Laura Cousino Klein, now at Penn State University discovered that during times of stress, men tend to go into “fight or flight” mode. For women, when the hormone, oxytocin (the love hormone) is released, they tend to gather with other women instead. By doing this, more oxytocin is released and acts as a calming agent. Our relationships with other women in turn, lower our blood pressure and cholesterol. “There’s no doubt that friends are helping us live longer,” Dr. Klein states.

Today, I am surrounded by beautiful, smart, successful women. Instead of envying all they have, I take so much pleasure in watching them grow, watching them succeed, seeing them in loving relationships. I’m always there to nurture them when their hearts are in need of healing, and I never find pleasure from in their failings. I love that I can partake in their happiness and especially, be a cause for it at times. I can say this about every woman who is an important part of my life, and judging by the support they give me in return, I’m sure they can say the same about me too. It took a lot of growth on my part to reach this point, but now that I have, my life is more fulfilling than ever. Yes, my friends are good for my health, and I anticipate a long, happy lifetime of joy with them.

Graduation Photo – Tips For Looking Your Best

High school graduation pictures are a lasting record of a celebration in which one door closes and another door opens. It is a rite of passage for high school seniors getting ready to embark on a new adventure. Because of the importance, meaning, and longevity of these pictures, it is crucial to consider how you want to look in them.

Most people these days choose to do outdoor photos, both in their caps and gowns and also in their celebratory clothing. It is important not to choose an outfit for under your cap and gown that blends into your surroundings; however, choose something that you feel comfortable in and highlights your best features. Solid colors often translate well in a picture, whereas prints can seem overwhelming. Also, consider that you may want pictures with your friends, and you don’t want your outfits to clash with one another.

Girls often want to get extremely dressed up for their picture, but it is better to keep things more simple and go for a natural look. Wear make-up that you would wear out on a regular day and dress up just one feature. For example, wear a darker lipstick or darker eye shadow, but remember to only do this with one feature. Also remember that graduation is an emotional event, and your eye make-up may run. Don’t wear too much of it, and bring a bag for touch-ups. For your hair, wearing it up can create sharp facial angles whereas when your hair is down it creates a softer image. Sundresses are perfect for graduation, as it can get hot during the ceremony.

Guys should be careful not to use too much gel in their hair, and they should also wear softer colors that go well with what the group is wearing. Full suits are rarely worn at graduation ceremonies, but nice slacks, usually in a light summery color, paired with a dress shirt look great. Also remember that your pants and shoes will show beneath your cap and gown, so dress well and avoid wearing your favorite pair of sneakers.

Interactive Website Content – A Total Makeover (or Just Some Makeup) For Your Webpage

CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT – Website Real Estate Needs Unique, High-Quality Content

This article is for anyone who uses the web – I assume that includes you since you are reading this.

Webmasters, website builders, and website owners will learn why the type of content is becoming more important and how to find content that is more than just text.

Website users will learn what types of content are available. You can use this knowledge to evaluate sites and waste less time deciding if a site has what you need. You can also add or recommend some new interactive content tools to your personal, company, or favorite websites.

An Introduction to Content: What exactly IS content?

The short answer to that is – it’s EVERYTHING you see on the web! Each web page IS content that is, itself, made up of different types of content. All content is not written and it’s not created equal. Much content certainly is the written word, but content is taking on many forms on the web these days.

Web 2.0 sites like Squidoo, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube, Digg, and Bloglines (to name just a very few) allow users to create, submit and manage their own content. Look at these exciting sites and ask yourself, “What different kinds of content is on here?” You should quickly notice images, photos, video, music, and text to capture and hold your attention. A little deeper look and you’ll probably find articles, ebooks, or RSS feeds.

Have you noticed more and more sites beginning to bring you interactive content? Users don’t necessarily create their own interactive content, rather they use interactive tools on these websites to educate themselves, prequalify themselves, answer their obvious questions, or just have fun. Examples of these interactive tools are online games, online calculators, blogs, maps, journals, voting, and comment boxes. Interactive content is best when it’s colorful, easy to use and engaging while still managing to be useful, helpful and informative.

Website visitors LOVE exciting and high quality content. That’s pretty obvious from the success of some of the sites listed above. What makes high quality content? Users have to have a reason to really like it. That may be because the message it portrays is ease of use, better quality, more relevant, more complete, more fun, more unique – more SOMETHING.

The SEO Dilemma: What is going on with the search engines?

Every website is trying to provide information to people – for different reasons to be sure. Observant website owners know that people want quality information from their sites – not just optimized, keyword laden verbage – and they give it to them.

For many of us, the buzzword SEO (Search Engine Optimization) conjures up this frenzied image of millions of websites competing for page rank and keyword position, which ultimately leads to web traffic and income of some kind. There are books, articles, and companies dedicated to helping you make your site “search engine friendly”. Everyone seems to have advice for how to succeed in this race. Too much focus, however, on high rankings and search position has created huge numbers of unfriendly sites, making it tedious and painfully time-consuming to find even 1 or 2 truly useful sites. Even the most targeted search usually turns up tens of thousands of results. Do these search engine companies really think that’s what we want?

How many searches have you done where the top results are unmaintained sites as evidenced by many broken links, nonworking contact forms and such? Search results are often flooded with misleading descriptions that go nowhere but an ad page or directory listing. (I don’t have anything against directories, just the misleading ads/descriptions that keep taking me there. If it’s a directory TELL me it’s a directory.) Or, worse still, the link takes me to a page full of unorganized links where it’s all but impossible to find anything.

So, how have these dead or ineffective sites floated to the top of the search engine results? A good questions to be sure and I certainly don’t know the answer. They have apparently figured out the SEO formula, but I hate to play that game because I know I’m providing my visitors with quality information. But what good is my high quality site if no one can find it? I believe these search engines want to display the highest quality and most relevant sites, but until they figure out how to evaluate them more effectively, we all have to compromise our standards to please them. A dilemma to be sure!

The Future of Content: What will your site need to stay competitive?

It’s obvious the search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN are working to solve this dilemma, but there’s still a ways to go. In the meantime, content will continue to evolve, with new types of content introduced every day. Some of the most popular sites on the web are adding interactive content to get and keep people’s attention.

To remain competitive every site will likely be required to do something unique – offer something different, make it look better, make it better organized, make it more fun – something. If you’re not creating or overhauling your site into a totally web 2.0 site, I believe interactive content is a great way to start. Interactive content is easy to add to your site and can give your visitors the tools they need to prequalify themselves, answer their obvious questions, understand what to expect when they use your service and more.

In the future, it will be even more important that your website be able to quickly establish you or your company as an authority in your field. Interactive tools let people experience your authority through site and touch, not just reading your PhD-sounding articles.

    In Conclusion

Hopefully, you are now more aware of the actual types of content you’ve been using and you’ll continue to develop a sense of how these different types of content can be used for different purposes. We’ve discussed the dilemma the search engines have caused site builders. Hopefully in the near future, we can build sites that meet the needs of our visitors and know that if we provide a quality site the search engines will reward us.

For now, we all have to play the search engine game, but let’s give our visitors a reason to stay and return by giving them good quality content. Provide this type of content and your visitors will return again and again, if only to use your useful, interactive tools. In the meantime, your brand and service is being seen over and over (and proudly shared). They’ll be back when they’re ready for your product or service.

It can be hard to decide the best kind of content for your site, but be assured there’s high quality, interactive content out there for everyone who’s looking. Start exploring and good luck!

Essential Oils – The Ancient Romans Lavishly Used Essential Oils For Everything

The Romans were much more generous in their use of oils and perfumes than either the Egyptians or the Greeks. The Romans were known for taking from other peoples not only goods and possessions but also knowledge. The Romans never wrote a single medical text but rather borrowed everything from the Greeks. If the Greeks used aromatic essential oils for healing the body-so did the Romans. If the Greeks used oils in their temples-then so did the Romans. If the Greeks had scented public baths, then the Romans improved this concept by having heated baths, scented with lavender flowers brought in daily by the slaves. In other words, they copied what the intellectual Greeks had accomplished and then took it to the extreme. History shows that the Romans fumigated their temples and political buildings with essential oils and their soldiers are reported to have used aromatic oils on themselves before going into battle to bolster their courage.

The Romans used three kinds of perfumes-solid unguents, scented oils and powdered perfumes to fragrance their hair, their bodies and their clothes and beds. The solid unguents included rhodium, which was rose scented and narcissum, from narcissus flowers. Their most popular scented oils included susinum, which was made from honey, calamus, cinnamon, myrrh, and saffron, and nardinum composed of calamus, cistus, cardamon, melissa, spikenard, and myrrh. These blends were very expensive and only the wealthy could afford them. They were what we would refer to today as “signature perfumes.”

The height of excess is exhibited by the report that the Roman Emperor Nero commanded that an entire year’s production of frankincense be burned at the funeral of his wife, Sabina Poppae. An entire fleet of ships was used solely to transport frankincense from Arabia to Rome. She obviously meant a great deal to Nero since the cost of such extravagance would be staggering in today’s economies.
