What Age Is Appropriate To Start Wearing Perfume?

Published

on

When did you start to wear perfume? Was it when you first discovered your mother’s makeup, jewelry, and perfume bottles? Or was it later on in life when you had your first crush on a boy? Or was it even later, when you were thinking about the idea of getting married? I guess the time of when one should start wearing perfume is questionable.

As a young girl, you may just be playing around and think it is cute to wear your mother’s perfume. If your mother owned Bvlgari perfume, like Omnia Crystalline or Omnia Coral, she must have had really exquisite and elegant taste. Bvlgari perfume is for women that are very elegant and have luxurious style. She might have also owned a Prada bag or two, if she was wearing such luxurious perfume such as Bvlgari. At a young age, perfume was probably just another item to use to dress up. I don’t think it is appropriate for young girls to be walking around outside with their mothers with perfume on, but just to try it on and wear as something fun in your house is quite harmless.

As a teenager, when one starts to be attracted to the opposite gender, there is a different reason for trying on different scents. At first it was just a tool for dress up, but as a teenager it turns into a tool of attraction. It may be more appropriate for an older teenager to walk around outside with perfume on, but for a younger teenager, say a thirteen year old girl for example, it would be less appropriate. Younger teenagers are still very innocent and less ready for marriage, whereas older teenagers are closer to marriageable age, and therefore, it would seemingly be more appropriate for them to start wearing perfume.

When one becomes an older teenager, or even into their early twenties, it is then acceptable for young women to be wearing different scents. I think this age is not even questionable about whether it is appropriate or not to wear perfume. At this age one is ready to be dating and eligible for marriage. Then it doesn’t seem strange that a woman is walking around with perfume, but as a younger girl, it may seem strange.

In conclusion, it is questionable about what age exactly it is appropriate to start wearing perfume. However, it seems inappropriate for a young girl to be walking outside with perfume on. For an older teenager or young woman in her early twenties, it seems acceptable to be wearing perfume then. It is the age range in between that is negotiable about the appropriate time to start wearing different scents.

Skin and Gill Flukes in Tropical Fish

Published

on

By

While parasites of various types are often responsible for fish rubbing themselves against objects in the tank, sometimes to the point of causing raw skin, it can be difficult to identify which parasite it is, unless you have a very good visual of it.

In the case of skin fluke, which is a parasitic flatworm, they are unlikely to show themselves to the extent where you would be able to remove them manually as you can with leeches or fish lice. One of the common denominators they have with other parasite infections, is they can cause redness of skin, but so can rubbing against stones and wood. However, skin fluke also causes a fading of color, and because the treatment is common to other types of parasites, you are best to go with a general medication, such as Droncit or formalin baths, when unsure whether it is skin fluke or not. Remove severely affected fish to a hospital tank.

The standard treatments of adding 1 tbs. of aquarium salt to a daily change of water in the home aquarium, and raising the tank temperature by four degrees also applies. This is used for most parasites, including gill fluke, which has more obvious and visual symptoms.

Gill fluke is a worm that specifically attacks the gill membranes, causing them to turn red and acquire a coating of slime that makes it difficult to breathe. Fish will hang at the water’s surface, gasp, and lose weight rapidly. The same tank treatments as skin fluke can be used, but with gill fluke, removing to a hospital tank and adding short baths in either formalin, salt or ammonium hydroxide to the regimen will help kill what is on the fish, and you can then treat their environment.

The Meaning Of True Beauty

Published

By

Unlike the traditional concepts, beauty is not just defined by humans. What comes to your mind when you see a Bugatti parked in your street (though let’s face it, that doesn’t really happen. Ever!!)? “Wow, what a beauty!”.

For this article, we have decided to focus on the physical aspect of beauty and ignore the rest for now. Beauty in our case is the quality of being pleasant especially to look at. Beauty in not limited to a specific gender. However more often than not it is used when it comes to women. A common misconception is that woman use makeup to look beautiful. That is not true. Natural Makeup can enhance your features so it just brings to notice your plus points and minimizes your negatives. That does not mean that it makes a woman beautiful. Beauty is not defined by physical attractiveness alone. Makeup is very common now and is an important part of our everyday regime. In fact for some people make up might me as important as oxygen. But for everyone out there who loves makeup, a small warning – do not over do it. The best way to go about using makeup is to try to make it look simple and elegant. The natural makeup look is the perfect one to try out this season.

For men, words like handsome and striking are a more common occurrence. However that does not deter us from the fact that both men and women may possess beauty. And yes this again is not limited to physical attributes. Some may perceive a person to be a beauty based on a random act of kindness done by said person. Some may even consider you to be a beauty based on the way you talk or cook or act and the list goes on. What we’re trying to say is that beauty is not just what you look like, it’s what you are and what you do with what you are.

Kindness, Selflessness and other such acts are bound to get you the title of a beauty in the eyes in the same way that having a nice face and figure will. It just matters on the people who are looking AT YOU. Some people place a lot of importance on the physical aspect of beauty whereas other place more significance on the spiritual one. In the end it is just about the type of people who are around you and the qualities that you yourself possess! It isn’t wrong if people place more importance on physical beauty because that is what we see about a person at first glance.

Reminiscence – Impacting Brain Fitness, Lifelong Learning, Healthy Aging, and Wellness

Published

By

The Power of Reminiscence

For thousands of years, people from diverse cultures around the world have passed on their traditions, beliefs, and advice through the telling of stories. These stories have explained the following:

• Lessons of life

• How to survive in difficult circumstances

• Why things have happened the way they have

• Tales of great adventure, tragedy or love

In addition to the wisdom passed down, we now know that reminiscence and life review is a proven way for older adults to gain self worth, learn more about themselves, and give the gift of their stories to the next generation. Recalling life stories should be encouraged at any juncture in one’s life, but primarily as people reach end of life. There are a number of studies that have shown that reminiscence and life review affects people’s lives in extraordinary ways that stimulate the brain, promote lifelong learning, and lead to healthy aging.

Brain Fitness & Lifelong Learning

Our life experiences impact the brain as we age. Every person is completely unique-with different people, events, and learning that shapes who we are. The wisdom and experience gained helps our brains prepare for the future. Engaging our brains in learning throughout our lives can help people age in a positive way. New research shows how the brain continues to adapt and gain neurons through the years if the brain is challenged.

“We can make the brain work better simply by accumulating more knowledge, which builds more networks of connections in the brain. The wisdom that we acquire can compensate for the decline that may be gradually occurring,” says James McGaugh, PhD, a Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives member at University of California, Irvine.

Learning strengthens the brain as weightlifting strengthens the body. Focusing on learning can lead to positive aging experiences.

Healthy Aging, Wellness & Reminiscence

Human interaction matters in promoting positive brain health. “There’s a lot of evidence that other people are the most unpredictable things you can encounter. So activities that have you engaging with other human beings are a fantastic form of brain exercise.” said Lawrence Katz, Neurobiologist and Investigator at Duke University Medical Center.

Opportunities to reminisce together and learn about one another’s lives in autobiography classes show positive outcomes in community settings. People have a chance to move beyond everyday, typical conversations such as weather, health, sports, and food. Now conversations about grandparents, neighborhood, school experiences, and personal values and beliefs are more commonplace. Reminiscence opens a door to new discovery.

Genetics plays an important role in successful, active aging and wellness, but the choices people make every day are critical too. Cognitive stimulation matters, but the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives also noted that physical exercise, diet, social connections, how we manage stress, and seeing the self and the world in a positive way are also important too.

What the experts say….

• Dr. Robert Butler, author of Why Survive? Being Old in America, coined the term “life review” fifty years ago. Before that time, researchers and physicians saw reminiscence as just a stepping stone toward senility and dementia. He disagreed with this belief and proposed that, as people age, reminiscence and life review were a normal part of healthy aging. Now large bodies of research show the positive outcomes from reminiscence and life review.

• Dr. Gene Cohen, author of The Mature Mind, sees reminiscence as a critical brain activity and he recently remarked, “Autobiography for older adults is like chocolate for the brain.” Cohen cites a 2003 study by Eleanor Maguire and Christopher Frith that performed brain scans on people in their 70s and in their 30s while they were reminiscing. They found that the entire hippocampus is “lit up” and actively engaged in older adults, while 30 year olds only utilize one small part of the left hippocampal region.

• Dr. Andrew Weil, author of Healthy Aging, encourages older adults to keep a record of wisdom, values, and life lessons in an ethical will, or heartfelt letter to loved ones. He writes, “An ordinary will… concerns the disposition of one’s material possessions at death. An ethical will has to do with nonmaterial gifts: the values and life lessons that you wish to leave to others…At critical points in your life, take your ethical will and read it over. Add to it. Revise it and share it with people you care about. An ethical will helps you organize your own experience and focus on who you are. It’s a spiritual inventory about what you want to pass on to others.” Life stories can lead to a letter from the heart.

Skilled Nursing Care, Memory Care & Reminiscence

Studies have shown that communities see remarkable results when reminiscence and life review is encouraged.

Increases Life Satisfaction

With female nursing home residents, a study randomly assigned participants to a reminiscence group, current events discussion, or no treatment group. The results showed significant increases in life satisfaction in the reminiscence group.

Improves Resident/Staff Relations

Nursing home residents were interviewed with and without staff present and in either a reminiscence/life review format or a format more focused on the present time. The attitudes of residents toward staff improved with reminiscence and with the staff’s presence at interview.

Reduces Geriatric Depression

Newly relocated nursing home residents underwent a study to examine if life review could prevent clinical depression. Significant positive results were shown in reducing depression at the short-term testing stage with an additional decrease in depression and hopelessness at one year.

Decreases Disorientation, Improves Social Interaction

A study demonstrated it is possible for older people with dementia to reminisce and that this is meaningful for them in particular, because of the losses associated with dementia. Another related case study used life review with groups of people with Alzheimer’s disease. They were assigned to groups with some participating in life reviews and others did not. Results showed significance for life review groups in decreased disorientation and improvement in social interaction.

Increases Orientation, Competence After Relocation

A case study examined the use of a life review program with newly-relocated nursing home residents and it was found to decrease depression, while increasing orientation, perceived competence, and social interaction.

Increases Sense of Purpose and Meaning

After group therapy with older adults in long-term care setting over an 8-week period, this study found that the two treatment groups were significantly different from control group showing increased sense of purpose and meaning in their lives.

Can’t Trim Your Own Toenails? Medicare MAY Have You Covered

Published

on

By

Toenails seem like a simple part of our body to care for, and in many instances this is true. Unfortunately, as we age, several factors conspire to make this seemingly simple task more difficult. The advance of time and years of shoe pressure and minor injury often lead to toenails that are thickened, and differently shaped. Nail fungus infections become more common, further thickening the nails. The body’s ability to bend over to reach the toes decreases, especially when hip or back disease is present, or if the belly is a bit too large. Vision issues can also hamper one’s ability to see the nails safely. When one combines these factors, what is left is nails that standard nail cutters cannot work through, and toes that are too far out of reach to be easily worked on or even seen.

When these problems arise, many people turn to their foot specialists for care, as many people harbor suspicion of the sanitation of nail salons (sometimes rightfully so). Given the age group that most people begin to experience trouble with nail care, Medicare becomes the primary health insurance provider that the physicians must bill to receive payment for their services. The benefits Medicare provides for it’s enrollees is quite extensive, and includes many medical services, tests, and surgical procedures. Many people also assume that this coverage extends into more minor procedures, such as nail and callus care. While universal coverage of things like nail care for difficult-to-treat nails would be ideal, the reality is that Medicare only has a limited amount of monetary resources to pay for health care. The government has to place priorities on certain types of care, and nail care is not high on that list when compared to stroke or fracture care. Medicare’s philosophy on nail services can be essentially described as an unwillingness to cover nail care by a physician (podiatrist generally), even if someone cannot reach their own toenails or has poor vision, as someone outside of the medical community can generally provide this service (family, friend, nail tech). This policy effects many cases of nail and callus care in which medical treatment is sought, and defines such care as non-covered ‘routine foot care’. Medicare will not pay for such a service, and it is unethical and illegal for a physician to knowingly bill Medicare for this service. A cash price is usually set for payment by the physician’s office for this type of service. Medicare enrollees have the right to demand the physician submit a claim to Medicare, but this claim has to be a special code that shows Medicare this service is non-covered, and Medicare will eventually return with a confirmation of this, and the instruction to bill the enrollee a cash cost for this service. This special claim is not required by Medicare, who lets physicians recognize on their own when a service is non-covered, unless the enrollee demands it. The problem with this demand is that this only delays one’s physician from getting paid for their care, sometimes for weeks to months, even though the patient will still have to pay cash in the end. It is an unnecessary delay that is usually only serve as an antagonizing act by a patient on their physician.

Given all this, it is fortunate that there are some very common scenarios that change Medicare’s policy regarding toe nail care. Medicare is very willing to cover nail care when such care, if provided by someone outside of a physician’s office, would possibly lead to harm of that patient. For example, a person who is diabetic or has circulation disease has a greater chance of developing significant wounds and infections from minor skin nicks than someone who is generally healthy. For this reason, if an untrained individual cut their toenails and caused a small skin wound, the patient in question could be significantly harmed. Medicare wants to prevent this, and has set up a list of conditions in which they feel warrant toenail attention by a physician. This list includes the following conditions:

diabetes, arteriosclerosis (confirmed), rheumatoid arthritis, peripheral neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, arteritis, chronic kidney disease, ALS, leprosy, syphilis related nerve disease, beriberi, pellagra, lipidoses, amyloidosis, pernicious anemia, Freidreich’s ataxia, quadriplegia or paraplegia, Refsum’s disease, polyneuritis, toxic myoneural disease, Raynaud’s disease(not phenomenon), erythromelalgia, phlebitis (active), celiac disease, tropical sprue, blind loop syndrome, pancreatic steatorrhea

Unfortunately, the situation is not as simple as strictly having one of these conditions. Certain combinations of symptoms or findings on a medical exam need to be also present in order to justify this greater risk. These include things like thin skin, swelling, poor pulses, poor sensation, a history of amputation, and other various findings that need to be noted by the doctor and categorized into one of three classes. Together, these are known as ‘class findings’. Without their presence, Medicare will not cover some types of nail care, and also will not cover callus care. Adding even more confusion to the mix is the fact that certain qualifying diseases require one to have been to the doctor treating that condition within the last six months prior to the nail care date. Medicare requires the physician treating the nails to submit the exact date the doctor treating the qualifying disease was seen with every claim, or it won’t pay. Finally, the agencies that administer Medicare claims are numerous, each covering several states. There can be slight variation from state to state regarding these coverage policies, creating even more confusion when one moves to a new state and expects the same exact foot care coverage policy.

For those who completely qualify for toenail care, Medicare will pay 80% of the cost of this service, and some Medicare supplemental insurance will pick up the rest. The new HMO-style Medicare advantage plans usually cover 100%, minus any co-pay the plan has in place. Keep in mind that this payment to the physician is often quite low, sometimes under what a nail salon tech may get paid, depending on the regional Medicare carrier administering the program. Callus care reimburses a little bit more, but also carries more risk of complications if improperly performed. Medicare will allow this service to be performed no less than sixty one days apart. For those uncommon individuals whose nails and calluses grow bothersome faster, Medicare offers no other option.

As one can see, there are options for Medicare enrollees to have their toenails cared for by a podiatrist. Unfortunately, the restrictions that follow this care are extensive, and limit the option for medical trimming of toenails to only those with the greatest of risk for complications.

The Handyman’s Toolbox: Fasteners and Fixings Every Man Should Have on Hand

Published

on

By

Any proper handyman should be prepared with the right tools. Along with your tool set, having a readily available assortment of nuts, bolts, O-Rings, washers, and screws can make any project or household emergency much easier to deal with. Not every man is born a handyman. If fixing things just doesn’t come naturally to you, that’s okay. Here’s a list of fasteners and fixings you should have on hand at all times.

Types of Fasteners and Fixings

Fasteners and fixings come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials. Here are some of the more common variations you should have on hand:

  • Screws- Screws are an easy alternative to nails for some projects. They are easy to install and take out, are less likely to bend, and provide more strength and support. Make sure the screws you purchase match the screwdrivers you have on hand.
  • Nails- There are a variety of different nails. Some are used for simple wood projects, while others may be used to install insulation board, repair roofs, fix shingles, or install floor boards.
  • Bolts- Depending on the type of bolt, these are generally used on items that require additional strength.
  • Nuts- Nuts are usually combined with a bolt or screw to lock them down against the project material.
  • Cable ties- Cable ties are a great way to hold cables, wires, and pipes in place.
  • Staples- Staples are great for tacking down carpeting to a wood subfloor, or for use with other wood projects.

There are, of course, many other fasteners and fixings that are more specifically related to certain projects or materials.

Choosing the Right Fasteners and Fixings for Your Home Project

Many fasteners and fixings serve a unique purpose. Don’t turn into a duct tape type of handyman, or one who uses one or two fasteners and fixings for virtually every project. If you are unsure what to use when starting a new project, look for online help or instructions. Base your choice on the following:

  • Location of the project. Will it be outdoors?
  • Will I need to protect against rust?
  • Will the finished project need to hold up under excessive weight?

Those are just a few of the questions to ask yourself. Gathering the correct fasteners and fixings before starting your project is the most efficient way to work. If you have to make numerous trips to the hardware store, it’s likely that your household project will be pushed aside until the next week, or next month. You get the picture.

Be Prepared for Any Project

No one likes to deal with emergency repairs, but if you have the right tools, along with your supply of fasteners and fixings, even an emergency can seem less daunting. Doesn’t it always seem that emergency repairs are needed in the middle of the night or on a weekend just after the hardware store has closed? By preparing yourself with the right selection of tools, you won’t have to worry, or rely on that roll of duct tape to get you through until the hardware store reopens.

Best Picture Hook For the Job

Published

on

By

There are many different types of picture hooks. The type of picture hook you want depends on several different factors. Firstly and most importantly, you need to know what type of wall you have. There are four main types of walls that people deal with on a regular basis. Drywall (also known by its most common brand name Sheet Rock), Plaster, Concrete (or cement), and Brick. There are two different categories of hooks. There are ones for use in Drywall and Plaster or ones for use in Concrete and Brick. Picture hooks are also designed to hold certain weights which are designated on their packaging. The most common picture hooks used in Drywall and Plaster are steel with regular common nails, brass hooks with smaller black hardened steel nails, hook and loop (Velcro) self adhesive picture hooks, push through hooks, and anchored hooks among others.

  • The common steel hooks with common nails must be mounted to wood studs or wood lathing behind the wall. So it limits the potential places that you can place your frame. Wood studs are only every 16″ on the center of them. Although this is the most inexpensive choice a stud finder is needed to find where the studs are behind the wall.
  • The brass hooks with smaller black hardened steel nails often referred to as ook hooks are able to be mounted anywhere on the surface of the wall that you want to put them. The reason being for this is that the hook has more surface area gripping the wall thus using more of the wall for strength. Also, in the heavier pound rated hooks the weight is spread across more than one nail sometimes of a thicker gauge.
  • The hook and loop (Velcro) self-adhesive picture hangers are definitely the easiest ones to use but they can only hold a maximum of 10 pounds. Bathrooms and high traffic areas are also probably not the most ideal place for these hooks because of the moisture in the bathroom and possibility of being knocked into in the higher traffic areas.
  • Push through hooks are also pretty easy to use and can hold as much weight as the nail in picture hooks. These look almost like a section of a lightning bolt. The reason that it works is that one side of the hook is resting on the wall while the other is being pressed into the back of the wall on this inside with equal pressure. The only downside that I see with these hooks is that they often stick out from the wall farther than regular hooks.
  • There are two types of picture hanging systems that you can use anchors with. There are the ones which are just a hook where you can stick a screw into and then there are also those that have wide mounting plate which has a level built in so that you can get a perfect level for your frame. The simple one is often only for lighter weight pictures. The ones that allow multiple points of anchoring are very secure and the flushest way to mount your picture to the wall. It is also the most secure method as well. It is versatile enough to use on any wall surface. The only downside is the amount of work it takes to mount it.

The most common hooks for concrete and brick usage are nail in hooks with a cushion on the nail for when you hammer it in, brass plated nails with hooks, and small pin hooks. These hooks all have hardened nails used specifically for cement surfaces.

  • The steel nail in hooks with the cushion are very handy in that there is less impact on the wrist when driving the nail in.
  • The brass plated hooks are more decorative and also spread the weight across a couple of nails in the higher weight versions.
  • The smaller pin hooks also spread the weight over multiple nails but this is only for lightweight frames

When installing the frames into the concrete walls it is fine to put the hook anywhere that you would like. When installing the hooks into a brick wall make sure to install the hooks into the mortar between the bricks otherwise you may split the brick.

Hormonal Imbalance Due to medication: This happens when you are taking any supplements or medicine to stimulate or restore hormones, say for treating infertility. This hormonal change in your body can also trigger hair loss. If you are consuming any such medicine or supplement that trigger hormonal imbalance, talk to your doctor immediately and ask him to change your supplement or medicine, this will resolve your hair loss problem.

Anemia deficiency: Deficiency of iron in the body can trigger hair loss; other symptoms of anemia include pale skin, cold leg and hands, fatigue, headache. Your doctor will conduct a blood test to confirm any such issue and to resolve it he will provide your iron supplements to be consumed orally.
