An incomplete mission: For Chris Nobrega, no wars were won after 9/11

Over the past two decades, Nobrega has had a unique, occasionally jarring, view of a world in flux. Afghanistan was merely the first stage.

This profile is part of a series called ‘Living in the shadow of 9/11,’ which looks at how the worlds of five extraordinary people changed, twenty years later.

The most frightening rabbit hole any soldier can tumble down is to look back on their years of service and try to analyze, from a distance, whether it was worth it. It’s a question most vets hate being asked: look too deep and there is the worst kind of doubt and self-hatred; not deep enough and there is avoidance and denial.

After 34 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, Maj. Chris Nobrega has a great deal to reflect on, but the question of whether or not it was worth it rarely comes up. The most important lesson he has learned, he says, is that his job is to complete the mission he is assigned. Everything else is better left to the historians.

Still, the problem with the post-9/11 war on terror, Nobrega, 52, admits, is that its logic is so serpentine that it can be used to justify almost any mission. “It’s not just a problem with the way the war has been executed,” he says. “We’re also talking about an adversary that has the ability to move quickly and endlessly refocus its attention.”

Nobrega has experienced the rapid evolution of post-9/11 wars up close. In 2001, he was one of the first soldiers deployed to Afghanistan as part of the NATO mission after the fall of the Taliban regime and was deployed again to Kandahar in 2007. In 2014, he was deployed to the Sinai as part of Canada’s contribution to the international force overseeing the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, at a time when Islamic State militants were stepping up attacks on the volatile peninsula.

Over the past two decades, Nobrega has had a unique, occasionally jarring, view of a world in flux. Afghanistan was merely the first stage. As that war dragged on, and new theatres in the war on terror opened up, he witnessed the evolution of a new kind of warfare, against an agile and adaptive enemy that paid little heed to the rules of war and was constantly developing novel ways of killing. The “war on terror” was being lost, though he is loath to use that term, in part because the very notion of winning and losing are meaningless in this new era of counterinsurgency warfare.

“From my perspective, defeating the Taliban was never the primary mission in Afghanistan,” Nobrega says. “We were there to help the people of Afghanistan come out of some dark times.”

That mission remains incomplete, and that incompleteness bothers him. From an “end-state” perspective, he says, the Afghanistan mission should have been considered generational. But as the post-9/11 world spiralled into uncertainty, the political will to stay the course waned. Canada left Afghanistan in 2014; the U.S. and remaining NATO forces will be out by the 20th anniversary of the attacks that triggered the invasion. But life in Afghanistan will continue and, Nobrega fears, revert to what it was before Canadians arrived, fought and died. Was it worth it? That awful question may be best left unanswered.

Could it be his wife, Majorie Harvey? How about Steve Harvey himself? Or maybe it’s his baby girl, Lori Harvey!

The world wants to know and SKN by LH, CEO, Lori Harvey sat down with Daily Pop to reveal the answer. According to the 24-year-old model herself, her father’s elevated look has been inspired by fashion stylist Elly Karamoh.

“I would like to take credit, but he actually has my best friend as a stylist, Elly Karamoh,” Lori explained. “He has completely transformed him, he’s like a new style icon. He’s feeling himself. You can’t tell him anything right now.”

Elly has taken Steve Harvey from baggy suits to slim-fit runway tuxedos, leather pants, and monochromatic hot pink suits. His latest looks have gone viral making Steve a soon to be fashion icon.

While Lori can’t take credit for Steve Harvey’s new fashion sense she can take credit for his glowing skin! The comedian’s youngest daughter just launched her new skincare line, SKN by LH.

“I’ve honestly been obsessed with skincare since I was a little girl,” Lori said on E! News’ Daily Pop. “Watching my mom do her skincare tutorials in the mirror, I was like, okay, I want to emulate that. I want to get glowing skin. She continued, “So as I got older, trying out different products trying to figure out what worked with my skin—I have extremely sensitive skin so a lot of the products I was using were honestly making my skin so much worse—and I decided, you know what, I think I want to give this a try. I think I can come out with a great skincare line. And SKN by LH was born.”

Her father and boyfriend, Michael B. Jordan, have served as test subjects for Lori to develop the best products for future consumers.

“He [Steve Harvey] always gives me unsolicited advice, but he gives me great business advice,” Lori explained. “He’s an incredible businessman so he’s been extremely helpful as I’ve been on this new business venture.”

Through the years, Kumail Nanjiani has gone from a fan-favorite comedian and hilarious actor to an A-list star, earning roles in major motion pictures, including his Marvel debut in ‘Eternals.’

Tons of actors go through rigorous workout routines when they take on roles as superheroes, and Kumail Nanjiani is no exception! The 43-year-old Pakistani-American actor will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut on November 5, when Eternals hits theaters nationwide, but the actor’s muscular gains have been in the making for a few years now! The actor has gone from lovable comedian to a total hunk in a matter of years!

Kumail began his acting career in 2008 with a bit part in an episode of Saturday Night Live, where he played an Indian reporter, and he continued to get cast in a variety of TV shows and movies. His first big breakout role was in 2014’s Silicon Valley, where he played the programmer Dinesh Chugtai. While he rose to fame mostly for comedic roles, he also received much critical-acclaim when he co-wrote the screenplay for the rom-com The Big Sick with his wife Emily V. Gordon, 42. The Big Sick earned Kuamil and his wife an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay in 2018.

While Kumail was always a good looking comic and actor, he debuted his six-pack and Chris Pratt–like transformation for the MCU in 2019, when he took to his Instagram to show-off his muscular new physique. The Stuber star joked about showing off his new body at the time. “I never thought I’d be one of those people who would post a thirsty shirtless, but I’ve worked way too hard for way too long so here we are,” he wrote in the caption.

When debuting his new look, Kumail praised the team that helped him completely change his look. “I found out a year ago I was going to be in Marvel’s Eternals and decided I wanted to transform how I looked. I would not have been able to do this if I didn’t have a full year with the best trainers and nutritionists paid for by the biggest studio in the world,” he wrote. With the first stills of the movie, Kumail still looks like he’s in totally great shape and showed off his character Kingo’s silver and purple superhero outfit!

James Kennedy appeared on Tuesday’s episode of Watch What Happens Live with fiancee Raquel Leviss and during the appearance, he offered an update on his friendship with Max Todd.

After Raquel was seen presenting a peace offering to Max on James’ behalf during the latest episode of Vanderpump Rules, James revealed where the two of them stand today while also shading Lala Kent for meddling in the relationship of Scheana Shay and her fiancé Brock Davies.

“What is the current status of your friendship with Max and why are you always getting into the most stupid fights over food?” a fan asked, via webcam, on the October 19 episode of WWHL.

“Max and I, we’re on great terms. [I] wish we could hang out more but he’s just been so busy and I’ve been so busy but we are on good terms and I just get myself into these sticky situations sometimes and I gotta learn,” James replied, also confirming that Max “loved” his gift.

Then when Andy Cohen asked, “Do you agree with Lala that Scheana’s ignoring big red flags with Brock or do you have faith in Scheana’s judgment?,” James admitted to feeling that Lala should butt out of the relationships of other Pump Rules cast members.

“I’ve got faith in Scheana’s judgment and I don’t think Lala should be sticking her nose in everyone’s relationship business,” he told the host.

Also during the show, Raquel reacted to a question from Andy about Sandoval’s ongoing tension with Katie, who is determined to be involved with their new bar.

“Does Sandoval need to be more accepting of Katie’s potential role in the business or should she butt out?” Andy wondered.

“Do you want my honest answer? I think that she should butt out. It’s Tom Sandoval and Tom Schwartz’s business and I feel like she’s kind of bored with her life and she wants to insert herself,” Raquel replied.

Vanderpump Rules season nine airs Tuesday at 9/8c on Bravo.
