‘Dopesick’s Will Poulter & Phillipa Soo Reveal The Parts Of The Opioid Crisis That ‘Disturbed’ Them

HL spoke EXCLUSIVELY with ‘Dopesick’ stars Will Poulter and Phillipa Soo about their characters’ very ‘different’ approaches to Purdue Pharma and what aspects of the opioid crisis left them ‘gut-wrenched.’

Dopesick is a new limited series that explores the origins of the opioid crisis in America. Will Poulter and Phillipa Soo play Billy and Amber, sales reps for Purdue Pharma. Purdue Pharma is the company that pushed the drug OxyContin on countless doctors and said it was “less addictive” than other drugs. Out of Purdue Pharma’s lies, the opioid crisis was born. Will and Phillipa spoke EXCLUSIVELY with HollywoodLife about what stunned them the most when they were learning about the addiction crisis.

“I was particularly gut-wrenched at the thought that there would be an attempt made to blame the victims, quite frankly, for their own addiction,” Phillipa told HollywoodLife. “I think that we’ve lost a little bit of our empathy, our ability to empathize with other people because other things get in the way: money, greed, power. The person behind all of these implications, it’s just devastating to see that people would be blamed for their own addiction.”

Will added, “I agree. That’s the thing that disturbed me the most. It’s the compound effect of actively burying information that implicates the drug as being highly addictive. And then going that one step further to then blame the people who become addicted and sort of labeling them as the villains in the story, all in pursuit of money. That’s really kind of the sort of whole sinister nutshell of it, which really disturbed me, and I think is, is probably going to disturb quite a lot of people to find out.”

When Billy and Amber begin to realize the addictiveness of OxyContin, they have “different” reactions to the situation. “I think for Amber, she’s incredibly ambitious and motivated. And ultimately, there’s a lot at stake for her, and she might not necessarily want to face the truths,” Phillipa said. “I think that there’s a very nuanced way that she’s able to justify and navigate what she’s doing, which is all stuff that she’s being told by her company that she works for. She’s doing her job, that’s really her perspective, and trying to put herself in somebody else’s shoes in a moment where she herself is just trying to find her way feels like a secondary priority.”

Will agreed that Billy and Amber have “different perspectives” on the issue. “I think without absolving Billy of blame entirely because, for a long while, he goes along with the rhetoric at Purdue,” Will told HollywoodLife. “He is fully immersed in the work culture there. Even when he first realizes that some of the things that he is, I guess, regurgitating and selling doctors on are not entirely truthful, he is by his own kind of admission sort of caught up in the success and the money and the status that I think comes with being at that company and rising through the ranks. My character is an amalgam, like a composite of a lot of different people who would have kind of occupied roles at Purdue at that time. I think he kind of reflects, as Pippa pointed out, what a lot of people were doing there which is they were mouthpieces for what they were being told by their higher-ups. They were relaying company messaging, which was knowingly false. They were very aware of the fact that what they were doing was fraudulent, and it’s interesting to have a role that allows you to kind of play both sides of that line, where you see a character aware of what’s fraudulent and then crossing that line into a public-facing space and presenting differently and kind of upholding the lie on behalf of the company.”

Will’s character, Billy, forges a relationship with Dr. Samuel Finnix, played by Michael Keaton. Will noted that Billy’s relationships with both Amber and Dr. Finnix pull him in separate directions as he becomes aware of the havoc that Purdue Pharma is causing. Will said getting to work with Michael was a “pinch myself” moment.

“I loved Michael both as a person and an actor. He was so generous, which is a phrase that gets overused with actors, but he really was with his time, with his energy, with his support of me. I’m really, really grateful to him. I loved virtually every scene that I did with him. The Billy and Finnix relationship was kind of alongside I think the relationship that Billy has with Amber. [It] was sort of very key to Billy’s development over the course of the series. It was really those two relationships that were sort of almost in opposition of each other in terms of which way Billy was going to go. I think, without giving anything away, Billy was being pulled in one direction by Amber and ultimately in the other by Finnix as the series unfolds. So it was great to kind of play the sort of the pinball between those two people.” Dopesick premieres October 13 on Hulu.

Adele & Rich Paul: How They’re Feeling About A Potential Engagement & Marriage

Adele and boyfriend Rich Paul are reportedly ‘in love’ and are starting to think about their future life together, a source tells HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY.

Adele, 33, is head over heels for boyfriend Rich Paul, 39, and apparently, things are heating up between the couple. “Adele and Rich are in love,” an insider revealed EXCLUSIVELY to HollywoodLife. “They both find each other great driven people that really work hard. That is something that inspires both of them. She is so charming and lights up any room she is in, and he lets Adele be Adele. The success of him being an agent is to let his clients shine while he is in the shadows so to speak getting everything else done.”

The source went on to reveal that the sports agent, with whom Adele has been pictured a lot lately, also “finds commitment very important,” and that the couple are considering their future –while trying to stay grateful for their present, of course. “They would welcome [the idea of marriage] but there is literally zero rush for that to happen and is not on the horizon as they are really enjoying being boyfriend and girlfriend and getting to know each other more and more each day.

The source went on, “They make it simple for each other and they want to be in that sort of relationship right now before they take it to the next level. It is nice to think about, but they are currently happy with where things are at this moment.”

Another insider also recently spoke with HL about how “connected” the pair has been in the past few months they’ve been dating. “Adele is having such an amazing time with Rich, they really have connected over each’s sense of humor, and they really admire each other’s work ethic,” the source revealed. “They allow time to spend together and also give each other plenty of space so they are not overbearing with each other.”

Another insider also discussed the couple’s upcoming holiday plans on Nov. 5. “Coming into the holiday season, she is really looking forward to making more and more memories with Rich,” they revealed. “It is not a honeymoon phase type of situation; it is two people that have clearly found the right person and it genuinely just works.”

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were two of many celebrities who attended fashion designer Virgil Abloh’s memorial at the Museum Of Contemporary Art in Chicago on Monday.

Kim Kardashian, 41, and Kanye West, 44, appeared in the same place at the same time this week when they both showed up to Virgil Abloh‘s memorial at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, IL. The exes, who filed for divorce in Feb., were photographed separately at the ceremony for the late fashion designer, who died of cancer at the age of 41 on Nov. 28, and seemed to try and not pay attention to cameras. They both wore black outfits and sunglasses and were seen walking at the location as onlookers surrounded them.

In addition to Kim and Kanye, others stars that were seen at the memorial included Rihanna and her boyfriend A$AP Rocky, Drake, Frank Ocean, and more. Tyler the Creator delivered the eulogy and Lauryn Hill gave a performance.

Before her appearance at the memorial, Kim has been making headlines for her outings with Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson. The two were seen holding hands on at least one of the outings and it’s been reported that they’re casually dating. A source previously told us that Kanye was “put off” by their speculated relationship and the pics of them holding hands and does “not like it.”

Kanye was really put off by Kim holding hands with Pete and he did not like it at all. He asked Kim to ‘please refrain’ from showing public display of affection with anyone until their divorced is finalized. He told her that it doesn’t look good for their family and it doesn’t look good for her, or in the ‘eyes of God,’” the source EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife.

Kim and Pete were first spotted together after she hosted SNL and did a sketch with him that included an onscreen kiss. “They were having a good time — you could see that there were sparks,” another source EXCLUSIVELY revealed about their time on the set together. “You can tell they became quick friends while she was on the show.”

Selena Gomez ‘Dying’ Over Working With Taylor Swift Squad Pal Cara Delevingne On ‘Only Murders’ S2

Selena Gomez revealed she’s having ‘so much fun’ working with her pal Cara Delevingne on the second season of ‘Only Murders in the Building.’

Selena Gomez, 29, just revealed how “excited” she’s been working with her friend Cara Delevingne, 29, on the second season of Only Murders in the Building. “I’m so excited! We just did our first day together yesterday and it’s so much fun working with your friends,” she shared with Extra TV on Dec. 6. “We had never worked together — or, actually, we did a long time ago, but on something completely different — [so] it’s so fun, we were just dying laughing most of the time because we just know each other so well.”

The Texas-born actress shared that she didn’t exactly ask showrunners for her friend to be on the show, but that “they actually wanted [Cara]” and she, as one of the executive producers on the show, was able to give them “a little push.”

Fans know Selena and Cara as part of the Taylor Swift squad of gals, as both stars famously made an appearance in the singer’s star-studded music video for “Bad Blood” in 2015. They’ve remained friends for some time, recently having a sweet, silly moment at the New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 17. The two actresses were put on the jumbotron in the middle of the game, and Selena sweetly leaned over and gave the model a little kiss on the cheek. The duo may have taken note from Selena’s other adorable video with their mutual pal Taylor, when the two took a cute TikTok together backstage during Taylor’s hosting gig at SNL.

A source close to Selena EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife on Sept. 20 that Selena felt like her role as Mabel Mora in the crime comedy with Steve Martin, 76, and Martin Short, 71, could be something of a career-defining part. “After all the things Selena has done in the business both in acting and in music, she feels like she finally has realized where she wants to be and that is thanks to the success of Only Murders In The Building,” the insider shared. “To have worked and to be working with Steve Martin and Martin Short on something that has been so well received she feels it has and will catapult her into roles that she really wants to do.”
