Classroom Management – How To Handle Power Seeking Students

Published

on

The sad fact is, it doesn’t matter how well teachers know their content…it doesn’t matter how many strategies teachers know to improve reading comprehension or to increase academic achievement…if teachers can not manage their classroom, they can not teach.

Many experts in education agree that the students who are causing the classroom management problems usually fall into one of four categories:

1. attention seekers ~ (pencil tappers, hummers, students who talk out etc.)

2. power seekers ~ (always getting in the last word, muttering under their breath)

3. revenge seekers ~ (recipients of frequent punishment)

4. avoiding failure ~ (students who don’t do the work or withdraw from the lesson as a means of avoiding more failure)

However, for most teachers, it is the power seekers that start to make our blood boil. These are the students who question your authority and do so in front of the whole class.

Many teachers feel that they cannot let the power seeking student get in the last word because the will lose face with the rest of the class…leading others to feel comfortable questioning your authority as well.

These power seekers are trying to “bait” the teacher by mumbling something under their breath or flat out stating, “You can’t make me do this assignment!”

Bottom line…these power seeking students are trying to get a reaction out of the teacher and there is nothing they would like more than to have their fellow classmates watch the teacher explode.

Don’t do this…Don’t fall for their tricks…Don’t take the bait!!!

At least not then and there in front of the other students.

There are other options…A much better approach is to take a deep breath, don’t lose your cool, and in a calm, matter-of-fact manner simply tell the student to see you after class and then immediately continue on with the lesson.

If the power seeking student then mutter’s something under his breath again just ignore it…that’s right ignore it…the rest of class already knows that you will handle the situation without their presence. There is no need for further response at this time as all you will be doing is disrupting your own lesson and giving that power seeking student just what he wants.

Then, when the bell rings and the class is leaving, simply pull that power seeking student aside and follow through without the audience that the student desired. Depending on the situation you may also follow that up with a phone call home, parent conference, detention etc.

Just don’t get “into it” in front of the rest of the class.

By knowing the reasoning behind why a student is misbehaving (i.e. seeking power) a teacher can make much better classroom management decisions.

Renew and Reuse Screws With These 4 Tricks

Published

on

By

1. How to renew and reuse a screw
The result of taking out and reseating a screw is usually a damaged slot. This is especially true if your screwdriver blade did not fit the screw. You can try to restore the old screw if you do not have a new screw to replace it. Start this by making the slots of the screw deeper. This can be done by using a hacksaw to cut into the slots. If the screw is not in the hole when you go to repair it, you will need to use a vise to hold the screw. Do not use your fingers to hold the screw. This protects you from injury as well as the threads.

Imagine you need to remove a Phillips-head screw, but only have a screwdriver that will remove slots. You can extend one of the slots all the way across the head with a hacksaw. This will allow you to remove the screw with your screwdriver.

2. Remove clogged screw
If a screw has been clogged over with paint, dig out the paint with a scratch awl.

3. Trick to keeping track of where screws go
When working on a large project, it can become easy to lose track of where your screws go when putting the project back together. This trick can help you keep track of your screws. Grab a piece of corrugated cardboard that has slots in the side. Use these slots to keep your screws in order of when you took the screws off your item. Sometimes writing notes on the side of the cardboard can help you when reassembling.

4. Restore a stripped screw hole
Plug a hole with a wooden golf tee. Fill in the hole with glue and put the plug into hole. Once the glue has dried, you will be able to drill out the hole and drive the new screw in.

No Doubt That Dr. Mark Stengler Knows His Stuff, But Is High Energy For Life All It Claims to Be?

Published

on

By

There’s no doubt that Dr. Mark Stengler has released some fantastic products in the past, but is High Energy For Life a great product?

Let us to the research for you, and delve into the details of this program to review how great it really is.

Dr. Mark Stengler is widely known as America’s Natural Doctor, and spends time helping patients in his California clinic using both standard and alternative medicine methods, believing in giving the greatest treatment needed for each specific patient.

He is also a best-selling author, topping the lists with 3 popular books “The Natural Physician’s Healing Therapies”, “Prescription for Natural Cures”, and “Prescription for Drug Alternatives.”

In addition to practicing and writing, he also participates in a weekly tv show with his wife, Dr. Angela Stengler, “Dr. Stengler’s Natural Healing.”

Patients from all over have been so impressed with his skills they’ve taken a moment to provide statement on his website describing their experiences. These reviews are all highly favorable.

With this in mind, he just launched a new program called High Energy For Life- a 5-week online coaching program that promises to sky-rocket your energy levels by tackling ailments usually affecting our energy, such as hormone imbalances and weight issues.

Pick 10 people out of a crowd, and 8 of them are dealing with an ailment of some kind at any given time; some as everyday as a simple cold, others much more complex. Whatever the problem is, it always manifests itself initially as feeling “blah”- low energy.

High Energy For Life will be offering online coaching, downloadable mp3’s, and action plans for every week of the course for you to get the most out of it!

Nothing travels faster than word of mouth, and so Dr. Stengler and his team will be offering stellar bonuses to their customers to get the word out on how fantastic it really is!

Once I decided to look at the product for review, I was expecting a run of the mill program. Now, I’m convinced that it’s a fantastic product; plan on using it myself, and also plan on buying early so I can get some of those bonuses!

The fact that the program is less than 200$ is amazing. Other program I reviewed were offering less, and were more pricey. Plus, they didn’t have Dr. Stengler behind them, whose credentials impress me.

Imagine what having high energy would do for you? It would completely change your life! You could do all the things you wish you could do, all the things you are missing out on because you are too tired every day.

We all know that energy brings in more energy. Being energetic will give you more passion in your life! More vitality! More love! More laughter!

I’m convinced that Dr. Mark Stengler is not only a great physician in what he does, but that he truly cares about his patients and worked hard to develop a wonderful product. Now everyone has the ability to take advantage of his care, rather than those located near him, and it’s a great product to try.

The best part? It has a 30-day money back guarantee. This means you could complete practically the whole program, and if it wasn’t for you, get your money back and it’s like it never happened. NO RISK. That’s stellar!

The 8 Best Mannheim Steamroller Songs From Their "Other" Albums

Published

on

By

The Mannheim Steamroller “other” albums are considered to be everything but their Christmas and Fresh Aire CDs. Mannheim Steamroller is a pioneer of the new age music genre, and has continuously been producing original and arranged music for the last several decades. I am a huge fan, and have picked out, in my opinion, the 8 best Mannheim Steamroller songs from their other albums besides the Christmas and Fresh Aire series.

Here are my top 8 picks, in chronological order…

1. Tigers & Lions- Saving the Wildlife, 1986

I’ve been listening to this song for almost my entire life, and it’s always been a favorite of mine. The ethnic sound makes you feel that you’re in India surrounded by Tigers. This song plus several others were written for the soundtrack of a PBS special about saving the wildlife. Wolves is another excellent song from the album, and if you’ve never seen the music video for Wolfgang Amadeus Penguin it’s hilarious.

2. Fugue- Impressions, 1993

When Chip Davis first met his very good friend Arnie Roth (Mannheim’s violinist) he thought he was a really classical guy. But later found out that when he was in college he played in a heavy metal bad. So, Chip wrote this song for Arnie, which is why it’s on the album Impressions (an album made up entirely of gifts that Chip Davis wrote for various friends and family members). He describes this song as a “Gothic Concerto Sounding Dooda Something or Other”, and it’s quite en excellent piece.

3. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious- Mannheim Meets the Mouse, 1999

I hope I spelled that right! I love most of the songs on this album, and was especially pleased with this arrangement of my favorite Mary Poppin’s tune, which recently had a successful run on Broadway. This album is an excellent collection of arranged Disney tunes and should be in your collection along with their Christmas albums.

4. You’ve Got a Friend In Me- Mannheim Meets the Mouse, 1999

I love the synthetic bass line of this song! Not only is this a classic Disney movie and a great Randy Newman song, but it’s a brilliant Mannheim Steamroller arrangement. When this album was released I drove down to the music store during my lunch break in order to get it. I first heard about it when they performed Under the Sea at their live show during the Christmas in the Aire tour.

5. Slo Dancin’ in the Living Room- Romantic Melodies, 2001

This song is quite different from all the others I have picked. For me, it just paints a very quaint little story about a loving married couple spending a few minutes of their busy day to be romantic and slow dance together in the living room. With, most likely, screaming children and burning food on the stove in the other room.

6. Mt. McKinley- Spirit, 2003

The feel of this piece is very American, which is why it blends so well into Mannheim’s patriotic album- Spirit. It’s an original composition by Chip Davis and channels Aaron Copland and other great American composers. It’s short, but sweet. The Star-Spangled Banner is another wonderful arrangement on this album which also appears on the albums Impressions and To Russia With Love.

7. All Hallow’s Eve- Halloween, 2003

This Halloween piece, an original composition by Chip Davis, fits perfectly into the season. It’s always well received at Halloween parties. I wish they had thought to do Halloween albums back when they first started. I wouldn’t mind if they released a few more. I’ve always thought it was funny that they put “Deranged by Chip Davis” on the album credits.

8. Creatures of the Night- Halloween 2, 2006

This creation was designed for dance clubs, and was the first time that Mannheim Steamroller did something for the Dance/Techno genre. In the music video you get to see Chip Davis play the Theremin creating all sorts of eerie sounds. They even went so far as to create a line dance specifically for this song for people to dance to in clubs.

Whether you agree with my picks or not, there is no disputing that Chip Davis of Mannheim Steamroller is the best contemporary composer/arranger of our time.
