Adele postpones Las Vegas residency, citing pandemic impact

LONDON — Adele has postponed a 24-date Las Vegas residency hours before it was to start, citing delivery delays and coronavirus illness in her crew.

The chart-topping British singer said she was “gutted” and promised to reschedule the shows.

In a video message posted on social media, a tearful Adele said: “I’m so sorry but my show ain’t ready.”

“We’ve tried absolutely everything that we can to pull it together in time and for it to be good enough for you but we’ve been absolutely destroyed by delivery delays and COVID,” she said, adding that “half my team are down with” the virus.

Adele had been due to perform 24 shows at Caesars Palace Hotel starting Friday following the release of her fourth album, “30.”

In a tweet, Caesars Palace said it understood fans’ disappointment but added: “Creating a show of this magnitude is incredibly complex. We fully support Adele and are confident the show she unveils at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace will be extraordinary.”

Celtics without Marcus Smart, Al Horford for East finals Game 1 vs. Heat, joining Miami’s Lowry as out

Celtics without Marcus Smart, Al Horford for East finals Game 1 vs. Heat, joining Heat’s Lowry as out

A potentially seismic shift hit the Eastern Conference finals less than three hours prior to Tuesday night’s start of Game 1 at FTX Arena, when the Boston Celtics announced that forward Al Horford had entered NBA health-and-safety protocols and would be out for the series opener against the Miami Heat.

The designation not only had Horford out for Tuesday’s start of the best-of-seven series, but also, based on the NBA’s required quarantine in such cases, possibly out for Thursday night’s Game 2 at FTX Arena and Saturday’s Game 3 at TD Garden.

“We found out about Al about two hours ago,” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said, less than two hours before tipoff.

Udoka indicated that upcoming testing results could impact the timing of a Horford return.

“He’s feeling fine,” Udoka said, “and we’ll go from there, wait to see results of tests and future tests.”

Udoka said he was unaware of any contact-tracing issues with others on the team.

It is the third time this season Horford, 35, has entered NBA protocols.

In addition, the Celtics announced that a second starter, point guard Marcus Smart, would miss the series opener due to the right mid-foot sprain sustained during Sunday’s Game 7 victory over the visiting Milwaukee Bucks that advanced them to the East finals against the Heat.

Smart was listed as questionable earlier in the day. Horford had not appeared on the Celtics’ injury report until he was listed as out.

“The soreness was too much,” Udoka said of Smart’s injury, “still some swelling, and limited basketball movements that he couldn’t do.”

Derrick White was the replacement starter for Smart, with recently injured Robert Williams moving back into the lineup in Boston’s power rotation.

“I feel like this is the world we’ve been living in for a long time, certainly this year,” Spoelstra said of the lingering uncertainties amid the pandemic, “Every team has experience dealing with this.”

Or working on the fly with evolving rosters on both sides, Spoelstra said, “This has become the normal prep: expect the unexpected.”

For the Heat, guard Kyle Lowry remained sidelined with a strained left hamstring, although he was on the court for pregame shooting. It is the seventh time in the past nine games Lowry has been sidelined by the hamstring.

Four Heat players had been listed as questionable earlier Tuesday, but then were cleared to play: Caleb Martin (ankle sprain), Max Strus (hamstring strain), P.J. Tucker (calf strain) and Gabe Vincent (hamstring strain).

Earlier, Spoelstra said at the morning shootaround that his team was in for an extended challenge, stressing the littlest things could make the biggest difference.

“They’re big, those moments in between, the plays in between, ball in the air, ball on the floor,” he said. “I’m sure they’re saying the same thing. You have two teams that take pride in that, so it should be very competitive in between the lines.

“And both teams do it in a way that’s not over the top. It’s just about doing whatever it takes to get the win.”

Heat guard Tyler Herro said he appreciated it was time to dig in defensively.

“I think both teams, everybody knows how well we are on that side of the ball,” he said. “I think whoever can get the relief buckets in transition, a couple of buckets here or there, that aren’t from set plays and things like that, I think whoever can get those in-between possessions, I think will have an advantage throughout the series.”

All without forgoing any defensive elements.

“I mean, that’s what we are, since I got here three years ago,” he said. “We’ve always been old-school that way. We’re willing to score 120, but we also can play a game in the 90s.”

Heat center Bam Adebayo said the team was savoring, but not caught up in, the moment.

“We’re just enjoying our moment,” he said. “For the most part, we’re keeping our head down, keeping the main thing the main thing.”

The series not only is a rematch of the teams’ 2020 East finals that the Heat won 4-2, but also a reunion for Adebayo with USA Basketball gold-medal Olympic teammate Jayson Tatum.

“Since I’m playing against him, I know his tendencies,” Adebayo said. “The Olympic team is totally different. But just knowing his tendencies, that’s basically it.”

For all the backstories, Herro said what can’t be lost is the significance of the moment.

“This is what you want as a competitor,” he said. “As a basketball player growing up this is everything you could ever ask for, to be in a game like that.”

Omar Kelly: Mike McDaniel must make Dolphins offense in vogue

Omar Kelly: Mike McDaniel must make Dolphins offense in vogue

Mike McDaniel’s style can’t, and shouldn’t be ignored.

The Miami Dolphins coach avoided the team-issued gear and wore spring’s hottest colors to the NFL combine, and accented that wardrobe with Burberry sneakers and a Louis Vuitton backpack hanging over his shoulder the entire week.

For the NFL owners meeting he wore crispy white linen shirt and some designer jeans, looking South Florida chic.

Then there’s the array of Yeezy sneakers that would impress any and every NFL player, even those with a stellar sneaker collection of their own.

“There’s a good amount,” McDaniel said Tuesday when asked about his collection of Yeezy’s, an expensive and hard to get Adidas sneaker created by musician and designer Kanye West, which the coach wears regularly.

“I’m trying to overcome my personality shortcomings,” McDaniel joked in a deadpan nature after pointing out his entire wardrobe has finally made its way from California.

His style clearly catches your attention.

Let’s hope the Dolphins offense, which is what McDaniel was hired to fix, features the same kind of fashion-forward approach because turning that unit into the upper echelon of NFL productivity, is the easiest way to make this franchise relevant again.

And it is McDaniel’s job to set that trend.

“He’s a super genius,” said receiver River Cracraft, who spent time with McDaniel with the 49ers. “That’s all you need to know. He’s smarter than everyone else. And no offense to everyone else.”

Hearing that type of praise from his players, and his peers is cool. But we’ve heard this before.

Former Dolphins coach Joe Philbin was supposedly the innovative genius behind Mike McCarthy’s offense in Green Bay. You know, the one that helped future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers win his one and only championship.

That turned out to be a hoax.

Adam Gase rode the great Peyton Manning’s success in Denver to “offensive genius” status when he was named the Dolphins’ head coach in 2016. But that label turned out to be fraudulent too, with the exception of the 2016 season, where Miami rode tailback Jay Ajayi and a forceful offensive line to a 10-win season, and the team’s last playoff berth.

From there on Gase’s offense was a bottom-dweller until he was fired after the 2018 season, and replaced by Brian Flores.

Flores turned out to be exactly who he was advertised as — a leader of men, and defensive guru — but he was never capable of putting together the type of staff that could produce a reliable offense that would inject fear into opposing defenses.

This is where McDaniel, who is Flores’ replacement, could set himself apart from his predecessors. He’s responsible for building a run-heavy, play-action-based offense that’s custom made for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa — and if that doesn’t happen we’re likely looking at another wasted era.

Only two things can hold this offense back and keep it from reaching its potential after the massive makeover the Dolphins underwent this offseason — adding offensive linemen Terron Armstead and Connor Williams, receivers Tyreek Hill, Cedrick Wilson and rookie Erik Ezukanma, and tailbacks Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert and Sony Michel.

The first is injuries, which every team faces.

And the second is the offensive line, which has usually weighed this franchise down over the past decade-plus, struggling.

Good thing that’s supposedly one of McDaniel’s specialties considering he’s worked his way up the NFL coaching ranks by establishing a reputation as a run-game specialist.

That explains why the focus this spring has been placed on the offensive line and improving Miami’s offensive trench play.

“As far as the offseason program is concerned, it’s almost built for our offensive linemen in terms of how to approach things because you need about two weeks of an hour-and-a-half, or an hour-and-45-minute meetings to digest, ‘Hey, we’re asking you to run off the ball, we’re asking you to have these landmarks, we’re asking you not to hesitate,’ ” McDaniel said, referring to Phase 1 of the offseason program. “Then in Phase 2, you can kind of drill it.”

Running the football isn’t stylish in today’s wide-open, pass-happy, fantasy football focused era of football. But coaches like McDaniel, who helped turnaround the 49ers franchise by helping them establish a physical rushing attack, could bring it back, making the ground-and-pound approach in vogue again.

But that only happens if the Dolphins manage to iron out the imperfections from what was leftover from last year’s dismal offensive line, and Miami produces a run-based offense that’s not only efficient and effective.

But a style the rest of the NFL admires, if not attempts to emulate.

Let’s see if he can go from being stylish, to being a trend-setter.
