Battenfeld: Liberal Somerville rejects vaccine passport, putting more heat on Michelle Wu and Boston

Liberal Somerville’s surprise decision to reject a citywide vaccine passport could signal a waning in COVID-19 mandates and leave cities like Boston that have strict mandates more isolated and scrutinized.

Somerville’s Board of Health voted 2-1 to reject a proposal to require patrons at restaurants, bars and other indoor venues to show proof of vaccination, saying “masking and testing” were more effective than a vaccine passport at fighting coronavirus.

“This policy is a really good idea for what we were facing with delta, and I’m worried that it’s less of a good policy for omicron,” Board of Health chairman Brian Green said. “I see people going into TD Garden, and they show their vax pass, and then they take their masks off and scream and yell.”

Somerville’s plan also would have opened the door to $300 fines for people that violate the policy.

Businesses in general opposed the vax pass proposal, calling for more public hearings and time to make a decision. More than 80% of Somerville residents are already fully vaccinated.

Somerville’s decision puts more of a focus on Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s strict vaccine mandates for city establishments and city workers, looking more like an outlier than a precedent these days.

But Wu on Friday doubled down on her policy, notifying workers that she will start putting non-vaccinated people on leave next week.

“During this pandemic, we all have an obligation to keep Boston safe though prioritizing the health of our communities at large,” she said.

Wu has taken heat from angry anti-vaxers over the past few weeks, even dealing with loud protestors with cowbells outside her Roslindale home.

And now there are more problems for Wu. On Friday, the large and influential firefighters’ union announced its opposition to Wu’s mandate for city employees — the latest sign of discontent in the city with all the vax mandates.

The International Association of Firefighters said it planned to appeal a court ruling that forced city workers to abide by the vax mandate.

“We intend to be loud,” union president Edward Kelly said. “Our rights are being trampled on by this administration and we’re not going to stand for it.”

Even pizza restaurant managers aren’t safe from the escalation of tension. A Regina Pizzeria manager in the North End got a punch in the face from an unvaccinated patron last weekend.

But whether it’s Starbucks reversing its vaccine mandate for employees or the Supreme Court blocking President Biden’s mandate for businesses, more and more organizations are backing away from strict coronavirus requirements.

In Massachusetts, Gov. Charlie Baker has repeatedly rejected a mandatory vaccine passport for indoor establishments, and a statewide mask mandate — leaving it to cities and towns to decide.

And with omicron cases appearing to drop, and more and more people being vaccinated, the prospects for future vaccine mandates in the state are uncertain at most.

Brookline has a similar vaccine mandate as Boston’s but other communities have not followed suit.

Ex-White House press secretary Jen Psaki hired by MSNBC

By MARK KENNEDY

NEW YORK (AP) — Former White House press secretary Jen Psaki has officially landed at MSNBC, where she is expected to make appearances on the network’s cable and streaming programs as well as host a new original show.

The program, set to debut in the first quarter of 2023, will “bring together her unique perspective from behind the podium and her deep experience in the highest levels of government and presidential politics,” the network said in a statement Tuesday.

Psaki will also appear on NBC and during MSNBC’s primetime special election programming throughout the midterms and 2024 presidential election.

Psaki most recently served as White House spokesperson for the first 16 months of the Biden administration. She previously served as White House communications director under former President Barack Obama and as the spokeswoman for the Department of State.

“Her extensive experience in government and on the campaign trail and perspective as a White House and Washington insider is the type of analysis that sets MSNBC apart,” MSNBC President Rashida Jones said in a statement. “She’s a familiar face and trusted authority to MSNBC viewers, and we look forward to her insight during this consequential election season.”

At MSNBC, on-air personalities are mostly sympathetic to Biden and the Democrats. During Psaki’s White House tenure, Democrats saw her as a champion of their causes, while conservatives found her combative and standoffish.

MSNBC has also hired Symone Sanders, former chief spokeswoman for Vice President Kamala Harris. NBC News has taken pains to draw distinctions between its journalists and MSNBC, which has beefed up its opinion programming.
