MLS Betting Picks & Predictions From Expert Handicappers

Our expert MLS handicappers provide MLS betting picks throughout the season in Major League Soccer. These picks can be anything from single-match winner wagers to more complex bets that last the duration of the season.

How Do We Generate Our MLS Expert Picks

Our MLS expert picks come from our team of expert handicappers who devote themselves to bringing you the best possible predictions from this league. They break down each roster, each team’s statistics, each team’s schedule, and more to bring you the most value-added MLS picks.

What’s The MLS Consensus?

The MLS consensus is the amount of action on both sides of a game in Major League Soccer. MLS isn’t as big of a betting market as the NFL or other top soccer leagues, which means the consensus may not carry as much weight as it might in a league with more bets on either side of a game.

Moneyline MLS Picks

Moneyline betting in MLS involves predicting the outcome of each match during the season. You can bet on either team to win each match or for the match to end in a draw. Because it is the simplest form of sports betting, there tends to be the most action in this market.

Best MLS Picks For The Regular Season

Eastern Conference

The Eastern Conference in MLS during the 2022 season should be highly competitive, as the conference features the defending champions, a team expected to make a meteoric rise, and several other contenders. The favorite to win the East this season is the New England Revolution, who finished at the top of the East standings a season ago.

New England enters this year at around +650

to win the MLS Cup in 2022 after they fell in the conference semifinal round last year to eventual champions New York City FC. The Revs were the only team in the East to score 60 or more goals last season, resulting in plenty of MLS betting picks being dedicated to their overs. This year, if they can avoid faltering defensively, they should be able to ride that attack to title contention.

New York City FC is the Eastern Conference team with the second-best odds to win MLS Cup this coming season. NYCFC is listed at +850

to claim a second straight title, following their surprising playoff run from the eighth seed in the East to the championship. NYCFC will need more consistency to repeat, but that should be well within the realm of possibility.

For those looking for a team with longer odds to come out of the East and win the title, Toronto FC may be the way to go. TFC had a terrible 2021 campaign, finishing ahead of only FC Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference. They’ve made a notable signing this offseason, though, that could change their fortunes immediately in 2022.

Lorenzo Insigne was that signing, as he’s joining Toronto FC in a move from Italian side Napoli before the 2022 campaign. Insigne matched the legendary Diego Maradona in career goals scored at Napoli, which speaks to the quality of the player joining the Canadian side. At better than +1600 odds

to win MLS Cup, Toronto FC could see success with Insigne as they did with fellow Italian Sebastian Giovinco.

Western Conference

In the Western Conference, Seattle Sounders are the favorites to make a run to the top of the MLS mountain. They’re at around +600 odds

to win the title in 2022, as they’ll look to avenge a disappointing postseason from last year. Last season, the Sounders fell in penalties to an impressive Real Salt Lake squad, and the Sounders will be expected to do better this time around.

Los Angeles FC is another Western Conference team expected to do big things this coming season in MLS. LAFC is on the shortlist of favorites to win this year’s championship, coming into the year at around +700 odds.

Despite finishing in ninth place in the West standings last season, even behind local rivals LA Galaxy, a major return for LAFC should see them back on the right track.

Carlos Vela missed over half of LAFC’s games last season, with a hamstring injury primarily responsible for his time off the pitch. When healthy, Vela is likely to be one of the contenders to lead the league in goals scored. If he can recapture his pre-injury form, LAFC goes from a mid-table team in the Western Conference to one of the legitimate contenders to win the title.

Last year’s MLS Cup runner-up finds themselves as a relative longshot to win this year’s title as they hope to bounce back from their agonizing defeat in the final against NYCFC. The Portland Timbers enter this season at +2200 odds to win the title, which ranks sixth among Western Conference teams alone. For the Timbers, the goal for this season will be to prove that last year’s run to the final was no fluke.

In the playoffs last year, the Timbers’ defense stepped up in a big way, allowing just two goals in four playoff matches. They allowed over 50 regular-season goals, though, leading many to believe they’ll regress this season. Portland could be a good value selection if their defense continues to trend in the right direction.

Most Valuable Player (MVP)

In terms of candidates to win the MVP of MLS, Valentín Castellanos has to be at the top of the list heading into 2022. Castellanos led MLS in scoring last season with 19 goals scored, helping to lead NYCFC to their first MLS Cup title. If they’re to remain a legitimate threat to win the league again this season, Castellanos will have a lot to do with it, hence his MVP candidacy.

The top scorers of both Los Angeles teams are also worth keeping an eye on when looking for MLS MVP candidates. A healthy Carlos Vela is likely to score more than the five goals he mustered in an injury-hampered 2021 campaign. Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez of the LA Galaxy is also capable of finishing this season as the top player in the competition, as he’s proven he can score goals anywhere in the world.

Top Scoring Player

In the race for the top scorer in MLS during the 2022 season, newcomer Lorenzo Insigne is an excellent option to back. Insigne has a couple of things working for him, as he has been a scoring machine internationally, and his team doesn’t have a lot of other scoring options. As long as he gives MLS his all, Insigne should take advantage of a steep downgrade in the quality of competition going from Serie A to MLS.

Ola Kamara of D.C. United shouldn’t be overlooked in the MLS scoring race, either. Castellanos of NYCFC, Vela of LAFC, and Chicharito of the Galaxy are also worthy candidates. Kamara was tied for the league lead in goals with Castellanos last season and D.C. United should be competitive enough to where Kamara should get his fair share of looks at goal.

Best Striker

One of the best picks as the top striker in MLS, Chicharito’s ability to rifle shots into the back of the net should make him the frontrunner here. Beyond his laser-like speed and precision on the attack, he’s also popular enough in the United States and abroad that he’s likely to get even more credit than he deserves at times for the Galaxy.

Another top striker candidate for the 2022 MLS season is Raúl Ruidíaz of the Seattle Sounders. Ruidíaz finished in a tie with Chicharito for third in MLS in goals scored during the 2021 season. If the Sounders are going to come back from last season’s playoff indignity, Ruidíaz must be a considerable part of the equation and will deserve plenty of praise.

Best Midfielder

Midfielders can fill many roles in MLS, and the best midfielder can mean very different things to two different fans and award voters alike. The top candidate to be the league’s best midfielder in 2022, though, is Carles Gil of the New England Revolution. Gil led MLS in assists last season and should be high up on that list again this season for a Revs team that’ll contend for the Eastern Conference crown.

Maxi Moralez of NYCFC will also likely be considered one of the best midfielders in MLS in 2022. Moralez doesn’t do much scoring for the defending MLS Cup winners, but he did crack double digits in assists last season. He also provides a veteran leadership that clearly paid off last season for NYCFC, as the 34-year-old has shown he can help his team get through choppy waters during the season.

Best Defender

Walker Zimmerman has to be the top player on the list of candidates to be considered the best defender in MLS coming into the season. Zimmerman has been named the league’s defender of the year award recipient in back-to-back seasons, serving as one of the lone bright spots for a Cincinnati team that finished as the worst team in the league a year ago. That stat alone speaks volumes about his quality of play.

Atlanta United defender Miles Robinson is another candidate for consideration as the best defender in MLS this season. Though he scored the match-winner in the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup Final for the United States against Mexico, Robinson isn’t known for scoring at the club level. Fortunately, his defending has been at a level where he’s not needed to score goals during MLS play.

Top Goalkeeper

After his heroic work saving penalty after penalty in the MLS Cup Final shootout, NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson is a strong candidate to be the league’s best keeper this season. He kept nine clean sheets during the 2021 campaign, but his real value appears to be what he can bring in the playoffs. Having the potential to get the saves necessary to win single-elimination matches in shootouts means more than stopping shots in the regular season, and Johnson checks both boxes.

Carlos Miguel Coronel is another candidate to be the best goalkeeper in MLS in 2022. Coronel led MLS in clean sheets last season with 13, which was impressive given his New York Red Bulls weren’t all that good this past season. If he can help keep his team in games, the Red Bulls could turn it around and get back near the top of the East.

Coach Of The Year

The Coach of the Year in MLS often comes down to the performance of each club rather than the work the coach has done behind the scenes. For that reason, the coaches of some of the favorites to win this year’s MLS Cup are worth considering for the Coach of the Year in Major League Soccer.

Brian Schmetzer of Seattle Sounders, Bruce Arena of New England Revolution, and Ronny Deila of NYCFC will be among the top candidates for this award throughout the 2022 campaign. Of course, their teams will need to win regularly to avoid dropping out of contention, but that’s not anticipated to be a major concern.

MLS Playoff Betting Tips

As it pertains to which teams will make the MLS Cup Playoffs, it’s important to remember half of the league qualifies for the tournament. When determining which teams will get there this year, it’s wise to go with a combination of clubs who’ve got playoff pedigree, along with those that recently made it with a roster similar to how they’re currently constructed, and up-and-comers who improved during the offseason.

In terms of teams who could make a run to the MLS Cup Final, it’s hard to pick against the new-look Toronto FC out of the East and Los Angeles FC out of the West. Both teams have game-changing talents upfront that’ll make the game easier on their midfielders. If those teams were to play, it’d be too close to call, other than to expect a high-scoring matchup.

Of course, the teams expected to get to the MLS Cup could change from week to week throughout the season. Factors like injuries, dips in form, and incoming transfers could very well change which teams are most likely to meet in the showpiece event of the MLS season.

Joanna Vail, ‘greatest public service lobbyist in Minnesota,’ dies at 93

Many colleagues considered Joanna Vail the “greatest public service lobbyist in Minnesota.”

“At the Metropolitan Council, she was called ‘our legislative mortician’ because she would always kill off any bad legislation,” Todd Lefko, a longtime friend and president of the International Business Development Company, told the Pioneer Press. “She was a fixture, sitting in the front row of the legislative hearing rooms, knitting and staring at any legislator who might vote against her bills.”

Vail was also a former nurse, Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party leader and aide to the late Gov. Wendell Anderson.

But to Capitol insiders, she will likely be best remembered for her furious knitting during legislative committee meetings. A political foe once mailed her a pencil drawing of a guillotine over the message: “Are you knitting, Madame Defarge?” — a reference to the fictional character in Charles Dickens’ 1859 novel “A Tale of Two Cities” who sat outside her Paris wine shop during the French Revolution endlessly knitting a scarf listing people to be killed.

Vail died May 12 at Presbyterian Homes in Arden Hills, where she had been receiving memory care since 2020. A former longtime resident of White Bear Lake and later Mahtomedi, she was 93.

“Joanna loved cats, baseball, reading and spending time at her family camp on Agate Island in Ontario, Canada,” her son, David, wrote in a profile.

“Joanna was a combination of the Massachusetts culture and the Minnesota nice,” Lefko said. “This was reflected in her humor, which could be biting, but in the Minnesota tradition, always told the truth.”

Vail was born Nov. 16, 1928, in Waltham, Mass. She graduated from Waltham High School in 1945, and then earned a nursing degree from McLean Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. She worked as a registered nurse in Massachusetts and Maryland in the early 1950s.

After attending the University of Maryland, she served as head nurse at Springfield State Hospital in Sykesville, Md., from 1952 to 1953 and was an instructor and director of nursing education at Rosewood State Hospital in Owings Mills, Md., from 1953 to 1956.

She married Dr. David Vail in 1956. They moved to Minnesota, where he became state medical director and she dove into politics.

After he died in 1971, she returned to work to support her four children. She became a staff assistant to Gov. Anderson, a post she held until 1973, when she left for a position as special assistant to the chair of the Metropolitan Council until her retirement in 1994.

A member of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union, Vail enrolled at Metropolitan State University in 1988 and became one of the first three area union members to graduate from the school’s labor studies program.

“I think people take for granted many of the things labor has fought and worked for. I don’t think they should,” she said later. “We can’t count on the benevolence of management without a strong countervailing force looking out for the interests of the workers.”

The Vails moved to White Bear Lake in 1959. She quickly became active in local politics but was soundly defeated in a 1961 primary election for a city council seat there.

She was elected Ramsey County DFL “chairman” in 1968 and Fourth Congressional District DFL “chairman” in 1970. Friends said she was the first woman elected as the top congressional district officer in either party in Minnesota.

In 1968, she was a strong supporter of Eugene McCarthy for president. DFLers elected her as a delegate to that year’s turbulent Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Hubert Humphrey defeated McCarthy for the party’s nomination. While walking back to her hotel one night Vail was tear-gassed by police who were battling violent protesters.

“I remember thinking, what the hell is this housewife doing in a riot in Chicago?” she later told Star Tribune reporters.

Her family said Vail, with the help of Anderson and others, “became sober in 1971 and remained clean and sober for over 50 years, until her death.”

She is survived by sons David Rand Vail (Anne), Garrett Murphy Vail and Michael Walsh Vail; daughters Sara Vail Palmquist (Dan), Rachel Vail Doran (Michael) and Martha Vail Spittal (Thomas), 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Vail’s memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Aug. 27 at the White Bear Unitarian Universalist Church, 328 Maple St., Mahtomedi. Memorials are preferred to Vail Place, a nonprofit organization that provides recovery service for adults with serious mental illnesses.

Salvation Army seeks 1,000 volunteers to deliver doughnuts to local heroes

Do you know a first responder, healthcare worker, teacher, veteran or helpful neighbor who could use a doughnut?

On June 3, which is National Donut Day, the Salvation Army Northern Division is looking for registered volunteers to fan out across the east metro and deliver a dozen doughnuts to their “local hero” of choice. The 12,000 doughnuts, which are being donated by Cub Foods, can be picked up from one of six metro Salvation Army locations.

Last year, the event drew just under 700 volunteers. This year, the goal is 1,000. Prospective doughnut deliverers must register in advance at SalvationArmyNorth.org/free-donuts.

As for recipients…

“It’s at the choosing of the volunteer,” said Dan Furry, a spokesman for the Salvation Army Northern Division. “We started doing this last year, and it worked very well. We’ll probably do it every year for Donut Day.”

Why doughnuts? Back in 1938, the Salvation Army’s “donut lassies” served up morale-boosting doughnuts, coffee and more to soldiers stationed in France, near the front lines of World War I. June 3 was set aside as a national recognition of their sweet service to the American troops, who returned home with a hankering for the fried confections.

Their appetites earned the returning soldiers the title “doughboys” and popularized the doughnut in post-war America.

The Photographer: Murder in Pinamar On Netflix: May 19 Release, Time And What Is It About?

Hold your seats fast! For there is another fiery documentary around the corner. On May 19, 2022, Netflix released The Photographer: Murder in Pinamar. The one hour and forty-six minutes long documentary will take us through the politically heated atmosphere of Argentina and focus on the death of Argentinian photojournalist Jose Luis Cabezas.

The co-writing team includes the names Tatiana Merenuk and Gabriel Bobillo. While Alejandro Hartmann is also one of the executive producers, Vanessa Ragone and Mariela Besuievsky have been a part of the executive production team.

The Plot

On the series’ description page on Netflix, the synopsis reads, “The crime of the photographer José Luis Cabezas, in the summer of 1997, shocks Argentina and reveals a mafia network in which the political and economic powers do not seem to be unrelated.

The consequences will be almost as dramatic as the crime itself, both for its instigator and the country.” The documentary again attempts to reassert the evil of governance and the mafia’s involvement in society’s underbellies, pulling the strings through the exploitation caused by money.

Freedom Of Press

The death of Jose Luis Cabezas was a lightning strike to every layman living in Argentina. This was a direct attack on the freedom of the press, for which people came out on the streets and protested this forced violence again.

It was a wake-up call for all; different media groups and human rights advocates asked for justice for Cabezas. The murder occurred during the times that one can  consider the golden age of the press in Argentina.

The Conspiracy And Secrecy

For a long time in the initial investigation, it is believed that it is simply political motivation; where police  put sheets over it. However, a name soon popped up that shook the investigation in another direction, “Alfredo Yabran.” No one had ever seen his face in public; no photographs, no visual identification marker was present for him.

This link led to new leads, and rumors started painting a whole new reality. Many people were apprehended from the area known as Los Hornos in the Bueno Aires province, and the case was put on trial in 2000 for the murder of Jose Luis Cabezas. They were sent to jail in feburary.

The Teaser

“Taking a picture of me is like shooting myself in the forehead,” almost horrifyingly; this line appears in the teaser released by Netflix. Yabran wanted to remain a ghost, but Cabezas was on his righteous mission.

The film is rates 16 and up, with children under 16 requiring parental supervision. Netflix describes it as provocative and investigative. Such unearthing of realities sure calls for a mature mind to deal with the complex reality we live in.
