While we are in the middle of the hot summer months, most Americans turn up the air conditioning or leave their fans on 24 hours a day.
This increases energy bills, but there are ways to save hundreds of dollars a year by taking a few simple steps.
Letitia Kiu, also known as letitiakiu on TikTok, shared with her 10,000 followers a few simple steps you can take to save money on your energy bills.
The steps will help your home all year round.
Letitia found that the following changes helped her save more money.
1. Weather stripe
Caulking your doors and windows will help you seal air leaks.
This will be helpful in both summer and winter.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) said you need to find some type of weatherstrip that can withstand friction, weather, temperature changes, and wear and tear, depending on the location.
The weatherstripping you choose should provide a good seal when the door or window is closed but is free to open.
2. Air filter
Letitia said replacing your air filters will help keep your furnace, or in the summer months your air conditioner, running efficiently.
She added that if you have clogged filters, your oven will work overtime.
Dirty filters reduce airflow and significantly reduce the efficiency of a system.
The DOE said that replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can reduce your air conditioner’s energy use by 5% to 15%.
Filters may need more attention if the air conditioner is in constant use.
If your home gets dusty or you have pets, their fur can clog the filter.
One of the easiest changes you can make is your lighting.
Letitia said swap out the incandescent bulbs for LEDs (light emitting diodes).
She said LEDs use less energy than incandescent bulbs – more than 75% less energy.
LEDs also last up to 25 times longer.
The DOE said that by 2035, the majority of lighting installations are expected to use LED technology.
