I’m a lawyer – you may be owed THOUSANDS of dollars worth of a refund without knowing it, but you have to act by the August date

There is still time to claim a refund worth up to thousands of dollars.

It’s part of a $147 million agreement between Western Union and the federal government, but the application deadline is in August.

Western Union Is Part Of A $147 Million Settlement And Eligible Consumers Can Receive A Refund

Western Union is part of a $147 million settlement and eligible consumers can receive a refund

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said refund checks worth up to $147 million will go to nearly 33,000 people who sent money to scammers via Western Union wire transfers.

The Sun spoke to a law professor who explained the importance of getting a refund in such a case.

Ryan Sullivan, clinical associate professor at the Nebraska College of Law, told The Sun: “Anytime you’ve got a government agency involved or an attorney general and they realize there’s a good reason to make a claim, you know, that he has been thoroughly examined.”

The settlement between Western Union and the FTC and the Department of Justice (DOJ) dates back to actions between 2004 and 2017.

Refunds go to people in the US and other countries, including many older adults who have lost money to grandparents, lotteries, sweepstakes, or love scams.

The FTC said consumers are compensated 100% of their verified losses.

Mr. Sullivan added: “In most situations, a consumer may have no idea that they are part of, or eligible to participate in, a settlement.”

Who was affected?

The FTC said the system involves scammers targeting consumers through multiple scams.

These scams included:

  • grandparent cheating: Where the scammer would pose as the victim’s relative who needs immediate money to avoid personal harm.
  • Lottery or Sweepstakes Scam: Where the scammer informed the victim that they had won a large cash prize but had to pay fees such as B. Taxes to collect the prize.
  • Romance Scam: Where the scammer would pose as an online love interest and request money for a visit or some other purpose.

In each of these scams, investigators said the scammers convinced their victims to send money through Western Union.

No victim received the promised money, prize, or item advertised.

Who is entitled to a refund?

You may be eligible for a refund if you sent a money transfer through Western Union between January 1, 2004 and January 19, 2017 and were the victim of fraud.

If your recognized amount of damage is less than the amount you claimed in your claim and you believe that amount is incorrect, you can request a review of the decision.

Mr. Sullivan said: “While the money may be nominal, participating in a settlement or class action sends a message to all companies that they cannot take advantage of consumers.”

If you previously applied and received a refund, no further action is required. You are not eligible to submit a new application.

This is the second round of payments related to the Western Union settlement.

In March 2020, refund checks worth around $153 million were issued to more than 109,000 people.

How to make a claim

To submit a claim, you must go to WesternUnionRemissionPhase2 and click on the claim form.

To be eligible, your form must be completed online or postmarked by August 31, 2022.

The Claims Administrator mails more than 300,000 pre-filled claim forms to people who may be entitled to a payment.

These pre-filled forms show eligible loss amounts based on reports people have previously submitted to Western Union.

How much money can you get?

The amount you get is based on the refundable amount you lost minus any refunds you’ve already received.

Your payment is based only on the amount of the transfer.

You cannot recover incidental charges such as Western Union fees, accidental losses, or transfers sent through other companies.

If you need a copy of your Western Union receipt, you can request a receipt via email by going to the Help Center on the Western Union website.

Mr. Sullivan added: “The federal government is here to work for the citizens, in this case the consumers.”

The CDC is FINALLY (sort of) catching up with reality

The Cdc Is Finally (Sort Of) Catching Up With Reality

After years of absurd COVID theater, the Centers for Disease Control has finally relaxed its guidelines on quarantine, social distancing and testing.

Alleluia! But it’s not enough.

Good to finally give up the fake the idea that standing six feet away from someone while sharing their airspace will keep you from catching COVID. (We now know it’s good airflow.) But it took bureaucrats more than a year to catch up with the science, even as the directive did unending social damage.

As for the insane demand that vaxxed people just exposed to the virus has to self-isolate for more than a week: this has done nothing for the overall results of COVID in the United States. But he did crippling businesses and disrupting schooling amid already massive learning losses due to lockdowns.

But a lot of damage has already been done (and probably irreversible for children).

The CDC has also changed its tone on large-scale testing of asymptomatics. Logic: current science has shown that tests are worse than useless as blunt instruments.

But the agency won’t let go of its commitment to masks, still recommending them indoors in areas with high COVID “community levels.” – although mask mandates have had zero noticeable effect on the pandemic.

Notably, the CDC change comes at an opportune time for Democrats, who need big wins before November.

Then again, most Americans ignored earlier CDC guidance for months, treating the virus as the low-level risk it poses to nearly everyone.

COVID “is here to stay,” said a CDC epidemiologist. Good for the agency to partly catch up with reality — while showing once again that our public health “experts” are anything but.

Yankees bullpen righting itself after recent struggles

Yankees Bullpen Righting Itself After Recent Struggles

BOSTON — With Scott Effross getting the save Saturday night, the Yankees have had 10 players record a save this season. That is the most by any team in the majors and after Clay Holmes recent struggles, it leaves the Bombers looking for guys to close out games now.

“I mean, it’s going to evolve. We’ll see,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said before Sunday night’s series finale against the Red Sox at Fenway Park. “I do feel like we have a handful of guys that are capable of doing it. It probably would be great to get to a point where we just say, alright, Clay, you’re back in there, whatever.

“But also I feel like they’re all capable of getting back-end outs,” Boone added. “We  want to put them in the best kind of positions to be as successful as they can be.”

Effross was effective in the Yankees 3-2 win Saturday night. Lou Trivino has closing experience and Boone said that Wandy Peralta would be an option.

Aroldis Chapman has made nine straight scoreless appearances after a season and a half of struggles. The 34-year old has been used very carefully since his return from the injured list, where he spent six weeks with an Achilles issue and working on getting his delivery ironed out.

“He could be,” Boone said of Chapman.

Jonathan Loaisiga, who had five saves last season when Chapman struggled, has been inconsistent this season. Their most reliable relievers aren’t here right now. Michael King is out for the season after fracturing his elbow and Ron Marinaccio, who had earned Boone’s trust for high-leverage innings, is in Triple-A because of a roster numbers crunch.

“They can all be. They’re all in play. They’re all in play, just depending where we are on a given night, their availability and where we are in the lineup,” Boone said. “We’ll just kind of figure it out.”

Since the All-Star break the Yankees have blown a lead seven times, second only to the Rockies in the majors. Before the All-Star break the Bombers were tied with the Braves for the fewest (11) in the big leagues.

HICKS SITS

After going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Saturday night, Aaron Hicks was not in the lineup Sunday night. The switch-hitting center fielder has struggled to get any power this season and his last month has been particularly difficult. Over the last 28 days, Hicks is hitting .184/.296/.184 with a .480 OPS. His last extra-base hit was July 9 at Fenway when he homered for just the sixth time this season.

“I know he did some things yesterday in his pregame work to try and make some adjustments and find some things hands and rhythm wise. Yeah that’s just been something that’s been kind of a struggle all year for us is that extra base hit,” Boone said. “He drives the ball so well. He is still working his way on base, which is good. So we got to continue to work to try and unlock a little bit more.”

Hicks, who is in the fourth year of a seven-year deal worth $70 million, hit 27 home runs in 2018. He’s struggled to regain that form. He has also been hit hard by injuries, requiring Tommy John surgery in 2019 and then wrist surgery that cost him most of the 2021 season.

HELP IS COMING

Giancarlo Stanton is scheduled to do the entire pregame workout with the team Monday before they play the Rays, that includes shagging balls in the outfield and taking live batting practice, Boone said.

Stanton could be playing in minor league rehab games sometime this week, Boone added.

The slugger has been on the injured list since July 24 with tendinitis in his left Achilles.

The Yankees could use his bat. Stanton has 24 homers and 61 RBI, but was on a four-game 0-for-10 with seven strikeouts slump before going on the IL.

After brief Twins call-up, Saints’ Aaron Sanchez is ready for next opportunity

After Brief Twins Call-Up, Saints’ Aaron Sanchez Is Ready For Next Opportunity

There was an interesting pitching matchup at CHS Field on Sunday afternoon: Columbus started Cody Morris, who is on major league rehab, and the Saints started Aaron Sanchez, who is in major league purgatory.

Both looked ready to get back to where they are confident they belong.

Morris, who held the Saints hitless through 3 1/3 innings, left the game after giving up a solo home run to Mark Contreras in the fourth. Sanchez pitched five shutout innings, allowing just three hits, but the Saints fell to the Clippers 5-3 in 10 innings.

The Twins recalled the 30-year-old Sanchez two weeks ago, and he made a solid start against the Detroit Tigers, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out eight over five innings. The next day he was designated for assignment, which exposed him to being picked up on waivers by another team.

When no team claimed him, Sanchez accepted a return to the Saints. He faced the same situation at the end of May as a member of the Washington Nationals organization. He elected to become a free agent rather than return to Triple-A.

Going the free-agent route didn’t have the same appeal this time.

“I feel like there’s opportunity (with the Twins),” Sanchez said. “I feel I opened up eyes. They’ve got a dude who’s got experience who has played in (big) moments.”

While he obviously hoped he would stick with the Twins, Sanchez said he was not devastated about being designated for assignment.

“Maybe you go through the claiming process and you end up getting claimed,” he said. “Now you (go) to the big leagues and you’re somewhere else. It didn’t happen, but bad timing, I think. Teams already had their team set; the trade deadline came and went.”

Sanchez said being back on a major league mound didn’t produce any particular emotions. He simply wanted to show all of baseball that his injury woes are behind him.

“I was back in my comfort zone,” he said. “It was like, ‘Open up some eyes. You were down here doing what you had to do to get back here. Now go out there and compete and have some fun.’

“I have a lot of game left in me. That start just proved to me that I did. I knew I was hitting my stride. It’s August and I got 21 swings and misses. I know my stuff can play there. It’s just about staying locked in until I get that next opportunity.”

The question now is whether it will come this season. Major league rosters expand from 26 to 28 players on Sept. 1. Only one of the additions can be a pitcher. Current Saints Ronny Henriquez, Jharel Cotton, Jovani Moran, Devin Smeltzer, Brad Peacock and Sanchez (and perhaps others as needs arise) all have shown enough to warrant consideration.

Being able to control only what he can control, Sanchez looks ahead only as far as his next start.

“I’m down here to finish strong for me, to finish strong for what I set out to do this year,” he said. “If my name gets called I’ll be ready.”

BRIEFLY

Recent call-up Chris Williams picked a good time for his first hit with the Saints. His solo homer tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning.

QB Kellen Mond looks good for Vikings despite 26-20 loss to Raiders in preseason opener

Qb Kellen Mond Looks Good For Vikings Despite 26-20 Loss To Raiders In Preseason Opener

LAS VEGAS — After Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond threw a touchdown pass in the third quarter Sunday, he received a pat on the helmet from head coach Kevin O’Connell.

He never got that sort of treatment from Mike Zimmer.

It’s a fresh opportunity for Mond, who seemed to be in the old coach’s doghouse all of his rookie year, In his first game under O’Connell, Mond had some very good moments even though the Vikings lost 26-20 to the Las Vegas Raiders in their preseason opener at Allegiant Stadium.

With starting quarterback Kirk Cousins out after having tested positive for COVID-19, Sean Mannion got the start for the Vikings and couldn’t lead them to a touchdown while playing three series in the first half and one in the fourth quarter. But Mond led the Vikings to both their touchdowns, throwing TD passes to Albert Wilson of 2 yards in the third quarter and 20 yards in the fourth quarter.

Mond completed 9 of 14 passes for 119 yards and had a passer rating of 130.7. Mannion completed 8 of 12 passes for 79 yards and had a passer rating of 85.1. The two are listed as co-backups behind Cousins on the depth chart, but Mond got a leg up on Sunday.

The loss spoiled the preseason debut of O’Connell, 37, who is a head coach for the first time on any level. He took over after Zimmer was fired following eight seasons.

The Vikings sat out 10 starters, including Cousins and tight end Irv Smith Jr., who is out for the entire preseason due t a thumb injury. The other eight ruled out before the game were healthy scratches in running back Dalvin Cook, wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen, linebackers Eric Kendricks, Danielle Hunter and Za’Darius Smith, cornerback Patrick Peterson and safety Harrison Smith.
