How Arsenal Could Line Up With Zinchenko And Tielemans In Midfield If They Plan A Double Transfer

ARSENAL are set to continue their summer with two new midfielders from Premier League rivals.

Boss Mikel Arteta has already spent £83million on four players to overcome last season’s top-four disappointment.

The Gunners have so far recruited Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, Marquinhos and Matt Turner – with more new guys on the way.

SunSport told you last week Arsenal are set to make a £30m offer for Leicester star Youri Tielemans.

Whilst The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed today that the Gunners are in talks with Manchester City over a move for Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The Ukrainian’s versatility appeals to Arsenal as he can play in midfield or as a left-back.

With the Gunners missing Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United, talks for Zinchenko have accelerated.

Should they be able to get a deal through the line, they will have a strong looking team next season.

Aaron Ramsdale will look to build on his performances from last season between the sticks, with Turner now on reserve while Arteta will have more options on defense ahead of him.

The return of William Saliba will put pressure on Gabriel Magalhaes and Ben White while giving Arteta the opportunity to play a back three.

Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney will be first-choice full-backs, with Zinchenko adding the right depth on the left and Cedric Soares on the right.

If Tierney is fit, Zinchenko could join Tielemans in a much-improved engine room.

Arteta then has plenty of attacking midfield options, with Fabio Vieira added to a talent pool that already includes Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Marquinhos and Gabriel Martinelli – although Nicolas Pepe could leave.

Gabriel Jesus is Arsenal’s new No9 and Arteta is keen to see the Brazilian improve on Alexandre Lacazette’s performance from last season.

However, should Jesus fail, Eddie Nketiah will be available in reserve after writing his new £100,000-a-week contract.

City Of 'Defunding The Police' Ilhan Omar Sees Surge In Majority Of Crimes, Data Shows

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

This is the first part of a Fox News Digital series about politicians and crime in the areas they represent.

The city of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a proponent of “defunding the police,” is seeing a sharp rise in most crimes, the data shows. The spike comes just a year after she backed a failed campaign to dismantle and replace the Minneapolis Police Department.

Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, which encompasses the city of Minneapolis. So far this year, citywide crime has increased in 9 of 14 categories over the same period last year, according to a Fox News Digital review of crime statistics.

“Minneapolis is a case study in what happens when city leaders decide to demonize the police and the criminal justice system for their political advantage,” Charles Fain Lehman, a Manhattan Institute fellow who works, told Fox News Digital. on the group’s policing and public safety initiative. .

“As in many other major cities, homicides and other violence rose in the city following the murder of George Floyd and the rise of the defund the police movement — a movement to which Minneapolis uniquely capitulated,” Lehman said. .

After Floyd’s death in May 2020, violent crime in Minneapolis skyrocketed. Last year, the city missed one murder to hit its all-time high of 97 homicides in 1997. And while murders have fallen this year, many other crimes are trending in the opposite direction.

In fact, crime increased in 9 of the 14 categories maintained on the city government website. Motor vehicle thefts in Minneapolis soared 32.3%, while robberies/robberies were up 30.4% through Aug. 7 compared to the same period in 2021, according to crime statistics.

Carjackings have increased by 21.1% this year, destruction of property has increased by 12.8% and assaults have increased by 11.4%. The data further shows that burglaries and break and enters increased by 10.3% compared to last year.

“And like in many other major cities, the easing of COVID restrictions has extended the increase in violent crime to an increase in certain categories of property crime,” Lehman said.

Omar, meanwhile, lent her support to the “defund the police” movement shortly after Floyd’s death.

“The ‘defund the police’ movement, is about reinventing the current policing system to build an entity that doesn’t violate us, while transferring funds to invest in community services,” Omar said just over a week ago. after Floyd’s death. “Let’s be clear, the people who oppose it now have always opposed calls for systematic change.”

Omar then backed a campaign to dismantle and replace the Minneapolis Police Department as growing crime plagued the city.

Last year, far-left activists led an effort to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with a “Department of Public Safety.” Activists successfully put the charter amendment on the November ballot.

The effort received outside support from donors and deep-pocketed liberal groups. George Soros’ advocacy nonprofit, the Open Society Policy Center, provided $500,000 to the campaign, Fox News Digital reported.

Other groups – such as MoveOn.org and the American Civil Liberties Union – have also teamed up to add hundreds of thousands of in-kind contributions, including staffing, mailing list access and other services that come in the form of non-monetary contributions.

However, Minneapolis voters firmly rejected the initiative by a 56% to 44% margin.

Omar also blamed the police for the spikes in crime in the city. But amid rising crime rates, the Minneapolis Police Department is grappling with staffing shortages.

“The Minneapolis PD is still grappling with personnel, which means the additional crime comes as criminal justice capacity remains overstretched,” Lehman told Fox News Digital. “The result is more harm for the people of Minneapolis, especially its less privileged, who are at disproportionate risk of criminal victimization.”

Wnba'S Brittney Griner Appeals Russian Jail Sentence - The Denver Post

By JIM HEINTZ

MOSCOW (AP) — Lawyers for American basketball star Brittney Griner on Monday appealed her nine-year prison sentence in Russia for drug possession, Russian news agencies reported, in a case denounced by the United States that could lead to a high-level prisoner swap.

Griner, an eight-time all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and two-time Olympic gold medalist, was sentenced Aug. 4 after police said they found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow.

Griner admitted she had the canisters in her luggage, but said she inadvertently hastily packed them and had no criminal intent. His defense team presented written statements that he was prescribed cannabis to treat the pain.

His arrest in February came at a time of heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington, just days before Russia sent troops to Ukraine. At the time, Griner, recognized as one of the greatest players in WNBA history, was returning to Russia, where she is playing in the American League offseason.

Lawyer Maria Blagovolina was quoted by Russian news agencies on Monday as saying the appeal had been filed, as expected, but the grounds were not immediately clear.

The nine-year sentence was close to the 10-year maximum, and Blagovolina and co-counsel Alexander Boykov said after sentencing that the sentence was excessive. They said that in similar cases, the defendants received an average sentence of about five years, and about a third of them were granted parole.

Prior to her sentencing, the US State Department declared Griner “wrongfully detained” – a charge Russia has firmly denied.

Reflecting mounting pressure on the Biden administration to do more to bring Griner home, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken took the unusual step of publicly revealing in July that Washington had made a “substantial offer” to bring Griner home, with Paul Whelan, an American serving a 16-year sentence in Russia for espionage.

Blinken did not give details, but The Associated Press and other news organizations reported that Washington had offered to release Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer who is serving a 25-year sentence in the United States and who has already been dubbed the “Merchant of Death”. .”

On Sunday, a senior Russian diplomat said talks on a swap had been held.

“This rather sensitive issue of the exchange of convicted Russian and American citizens is being discussed through the channels set by our presidents,” Alexander Darchiev, head of the North America department at the Foreign Ministry, told the official news agency. Cup. “These individuals are, indeed, the subject of discussion. The Russian side has long called for the release of Viktor Bout. The details should be left to the professionals.

Uk Approves Covid Booster Vaccine That Targets Two Variants

UK regulators on Monday approved the country’s first Covid-19 booster vaccine to target two variants of coronavirus, the original virus and the Omicron variant.

Half of each dose of the vaccine, or 25 micrograms, will target the original variant, and the other half will target Omicron. In clinical trials, the vaccine, an updated version of Moderna’s original Covid vaccine, generated a good immune response to both of these variants, as well as the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants in adults, have discovered the researchers.

Dr June Raine, chief executive of the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, said she was delighted that the new booster vaccine met the regulator’s standards for safety, quality and efficacy. The decision was endorsed by the UK’s independent scientific advisory body, the Commission on Human Medicines.

“The first generation of Covid-19 vaccines used in the UK continue to provide significant protection against disease and save lives,” Dr Raine said. “What this bivalent vaccine gives us is a sharp tool in our arsenal to help protect us against this disease as the virus continues to evolve.”

Side effects were the same as those seen for the original Moderna booster dose and were generally mild, with no serious safety concerns, UK regulators said.

The emergence of highly contagious subvariants of Omicron this spring appeared to reduce the protection offered by the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines against Covid hospitalizations, with more vaccinated people admitted to hospital with Covid than they do. had been during Omicron’s winter surge. But booster shots have increased people’s level of protection, scientists from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last month. The CDC recommends that people get booster shots as soon as they are eligible.

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers gathered on the field at Levi’s Stadium Sunday night not to play ball but for a special cause: to tackle the education and empowerment of Bay Area youth.

The benefit dinner in the end zone is the only event of the year where the whole team is present.

49ers players took part in a Family Feud-style friendly game on stage, helped auction off exclusive packages and met fans one-on-one.

The mission of this fifth annual launch event was to raise funds to help tens of thousands of young people.

“At the end of Friday night’s game – to see them all show up and show up on a Sunday after training and give their time and give back – it really shows the commitment to being champions on the pitch and champions in the game. community as well,” said 49ers Foundation executive director Justin Prettyman.

Big names in football, including Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens and new starting quarterback Trey Lance, sat down with guests, as did coaches, team executives and owners.

“I’m very proud that it’s for young people. I’m very passionate about it. I think young people are our future,” defensive lineman Arik Armstead said.

Armstead grew up in the Sacramento area.

“I’ve been to a lot of camps growing up, a lot of Kings players that I’ve met over the years and taken inspiration from,” he added.

Since 1991, the 49ers Foundation has raised more than $50 million and invested it in various community programs, including STEM classes and health and wellness services.

“This last offseason I was able to do my first flag football camp which was pretty special, just being around them, being able to touch them,” linebacker Fred Warner said. “Whatever questions they ask it’s usually something funny, I don’t know, they’re probably asking me to do the ‘griddy’ or something. But the message I always try to to pass on to them is to dream big.”

Sunday’s event raised $760,000, surpassing last year’s total of more than $650,000.
