BORIS Johnson dressed up as a Top Gun pilot as he visited an RAF base amid Tory leadership dogfights.

The Prime Minister donned his flying gear for a demonstration of a Typhoon fighter jet the day before the five Tory MPs who are campaigning to replace him faced each other in their first televised debate.

Yesterday the Government announced a £1.35 billion upgrade to the Typhoon fleet which will preserve 1,300 jobs.

On Thursday, pilots and flight crew gave Mr Johnson a tour of RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, where he inspected two rapid reaction warning stations protecting British airspace.

Pictures show him channeling his inner Tom Cruise, 60, who has starred in the Top Gun films since 1986.

It comes as fellow Tory colleagues Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt, Liz Truss, Kemi Badenoch and Tom Tugendhat battle to become the next party leader and prime minister.

Last night, the five MPs tore each other apart in their first televised fight.

They trashed each other over taxes, expenses and honesty, and all five banged Mr. Johnson.

Foreign Secretary Truss made £20bn in spending pledges if she becomes Prime Minister.

It wants to temporarily cut green taxes and drop planned corporate tax hikes if it wins the contest.

Ms Penny Mordaunt has urged rival camps to halt “black ops” briefings amid a row over her use of a private helicopter.

And former army officer Mr Tugendhat made a virtue of never having served in the cabinet, insisting he was the “clean start” the country needed.

Meanwhile, rising star Ms Badenoch insisted: “I don’t promise anything without having a delivery schedule.”

And former Chancellor Mr Sunak, who resigned from Boris’ government last week, wrote in The Sun that he will “make Brexit sing” by ridding Britain of what remains of Brussels bureaucracy to boost the economy.

Mr Sunak and Ms Mordaunt stormed the leadership battle in this week’s first Conservative vote as Jeremy Hunt and Nahim Zahawi fell.

Attorney General Suella Braverman was also eliminated in a subsequent round on Thursday.

The parliamentary group must reduce the candidates to the last two so that the members can vote on them.

Bookmakers have said Brexiteer Penny, 49, is the favorite after beating her rivals in a poll of Conservative Party members.
