The walrus who became famous this year for his adorable stubbornness to sunbathe on boats docked in Oslo, Norway has been euthanized, officials said.

Nicknamed Freya, the walrus was shot as it remained a lingering threat to human safety as people got too close to it.

“The decision to euthanize was made based on an overall assessment of the continuing threat to human security,” Frank Bakke-Jensen, Norway’s chief fisheries officer, said in a statement.

“We carefully considered all possible solutions. We concluded that we could not guarantee the welfare of the animal by any means available,” he said.

Repeated pleas to the public to keep away from the walrus did not work, officials had said, adding that people also threw objects at Freya. They said they were considering euthanizing the 600kg young female if people continued to defy her advice.

The walrus had made headlines last month after it was spotted in Oslo waters, sometimes seen attacking a swan or sunbathing on moored boats. She had become famous with people, sometimes with children, trying to get close to her to take pictures.

Taxi Drivers Gather In Queens After Passengers Were Charged With Beating Driver Kutin Gyimah To Death

NEW YORK — There was a rally in Queens on Sunday after a taxi driver was beaten to death by passengers who police say refused to pay for his fare and attempted to rob him.

This driver is remembered as a loving husband and father just trying to support his family, CBS2’s Andrea Grymes reported.

“I don’t know what to do right now. I lost. I lost,” said Abigail Barwuah.

The widow of Kutin Gyimah couldn’t hold back tears as she spoke of her beloved husband, who was killed in Far Rockaway.

“He was a good, good man. He was my backbone. I’m lost right now. My kids’ hero,” Barwuah said.

The yellow taxi driver, described as a hardworking father, leaves behind four children aged 3 to 8.

The Ghanaian community comes together to comfort Gyimah’s wife and family. Gyimah was a devout Christian.

“She’s so young to be dealing with this with four kids. Too bad,” said Hanna Mensah, another family friend.

Police said his five passengers tried to rob him when he dropped them off at Beach 54th Street and Arverne Boulevard around 6.30am on Saturday.

Investigators said Gyimah took off after them and witnesses saw the passengers – three men and two women – assaulting him.

According to the police, he fell to the ground and hit his head.

“It’s awful. It’s just awful,” said Katherine Wood of Co-Op City.

“Why do you have to attack someone for no reason? How much is that money really? You took someone’s life. Come on,” said family friend Joe Tompo.

On Sunday morning, the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers stood with his wife and children and offered a $15,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

“We know the pain and suffering has only just begun for this family, and we demand justice,” said the federation’s Fernando Mateo. “I’m pissed. I’m mad and I’m mad because this all could have been avoided. We need to look around and say what city do we live in?”

Spyros Drakos of Big Apple Taxi Fleet Management said Gyimah has worked tirelessly, especially during the pandemic.

“This gentleman was driving his taxi. He never stopped picking up passengers. To me, he’s a hero as a first responder,” Drakos said.

“A loving, loving and caring gentleman. Hard working, caring for the family. Yes, we have truly lost a devoted father,” added Rev. Dr. Samuel Arhin of the United Methodist Church in Ghana.

Big Apple Taxi Fleet will cover all funeral expenses.

City Of 'Defunding The Police' Ilhan Omar Sees Surge In Majority Of Crimes, Data Shows

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

This is the first part of a Fox News Digital series about politicians and crime in the areas they represent.

The city of Rep. Ilhan Omar, a proponent of “defunding the police,” is seeing a sharp rise in most crimes, the data shows. The spike comes just a year after she backed a failed campaign to dismantle and replace the Minneapolis Police Department.

Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, which encompasses the city of Minneapolis. So far this year, citywide crime has increased in 9 of 14 categories over the same period last year, according to a Fox News Digital review of crime statistics.

“Minneapolis is a case study in what happens when city leaders decide to demonize the police and the criminal justice system for their political advantage,” Charles Fain Lehman, a Manhattan Institute fellow who works, told Fox News Digital. on the group’s policing and public safety initiative. .

“As in many other major cities, homicides and other violence rose in the city following the murder of George Floyd and the rise of the defund the police movement — a movement to which Minneapolis uniquely capitulated,” Lehman said. .

After Floyd’s death in May 2020, violent crime in Minneapolis skyrocketed. Last year, the city missed one murder to hit its all-time high of 97 homicides in 1997. And while murders have fallen this year, many other crimes are trending in the opposite direction.

In fact, crime increased in 9 of the 14 categories maintained on the city government website. Motor vehicle thefts in Minneapolis soared 32.3%, while robberies/robberies were up 30.4% through Aug. 7 compared to the same period in 2021, according to crime statistics.

Carjackings have increased by 21.1% this year, destruction of property has increased by 12.8% and assaults have increased by 11.4%. The data further shows that burglaries and break and enters increased by 10.3% compared to last year.

“And like in many other major cities, the easing of COVID restrictions has extended the increase in violent crime to an increase in certain categories of property crime,” Lehman said.

Omar, meanwhile, lent her support to the “defund the police” movement shortly after Floyd’s death.

“The ‘defund the police’ movement, is about reinventing the current policing system to build an entity that doesn’t violate us, while transferring funds to invest in community services,” Omar said just over a week ago. after Floyd’s death. “Let’s be clear, the people who oppose it now have always opposed calls for systematic change.”

Omar then backed a campaign to dismantle and replace the Minneapolis Police Department as growing crime plagued the city.

Last year, far-left activists led an effort to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department and replace it with a “Department of Public Safety.” Activists successfully put the charter amendment on the November ballot.

The effort received outside support from donors and deep-pocketed liberal groups. George Soros’ advocacy nonprofit, the Open Society Policy Center, provided $500,000 to the campaign, Fox News Digital reported.

Other groups – such as MoveOn.org and the American Civil Liberties Union – have also teamed up to add hundreds of thousands of in-kind contributions, including staffing, mailing list access and other services that come in the form of non-monetary contributions.

However, Minneapolis voters firmly rejected the initiative by a 56% to 44% margin.

Omar also blamed the police for the spikes in crime in the city. But amid rising crime rates, the Minneapolis Police Department is grappling with staffing shortages.

“The Minneapolis PD is still grappling with personnel, which means the additional crime comes as criminal justice capacity remains overstretched,” Lehman told Fox News Digital. “The result is more harm for the people of Minneapolis, especially its less privileged, who are at disproportionate risk of criminal victimization.”

Wnba'S Brittney Griner Appeals Russian Jail Sentence - The Denver Post

By JIM HEINTZ

MOSCOW (AP) — Lawyers for American basketball star Brittney Griner on Monday appealed her nine-year prison sentence in Russia for drug possession, Russian news agencies reported, in a case denounced by the United States that could lead to a high-level prisoner swap.

Griner, an eight-time all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and two-time Olympic gold medalist, was sentenced Aug. 4 after police said they found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow.

Griner admitted she had the canisters in her luggage, but said she inadvertently hastily packed them and had no criminal intent. His defense team presented written statements that he was prescribed cannabis to treat the pain.

His arrest in February came at a time of heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington, just days before Russia sent troops to Ukraine. At the time, Griner, recognized as one of the greatest players in WNBA history, was returning to Russia, where she is playing in the American League offseason.

Lawyer Maria Blagovolina was quoted by Russian news agencies on Monday as saying the appeal had been filed, as expected, but the grounds were not immediately clear.

The nine-year sentence was close to the 10-year maximum, and Blagovolina and co-counsel Alexander Boykov said after sentencing that the sentence was excessive. They said that in similar cases, the defendants received an average sentence of about five years, and about a third of them were granted parole.

Prior to her sentencing, the US State Department declared Griner “wrongfully detained” – a charge Russia has firmly denied.

Reflecting mounting pressure on the Biden administration to do more to bring Griner home, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken took the unusual step of publicly revealing in July that Washington had made a “substantial offer” to bring Griner home, with Paul Whelan, an American serving a 16-year sentence in Russia for espionage.

Blinken did not give details, but The Associated Press and other news organizations reported that Washington had offered to release Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer who is serving a 25-year sentence in the United States and who has already been dubbed the “Merchant of Death”. .”

On Sunday, a senior Russian diplomat said talks on a swap had been held.

“This rather sensitive issue of the exchange of convicted Russian and American citizens is being discussed through the channels set by our presidents,” Alexander Darchiev, head of the North America department at the Foreign Ministry, told the official news agency. Cup. “These individuals are, indeed, the subject of discussion. The Russian side has long called for the release of Viktor Bout. The details should be left to the professionals.
