The behind-the-scenes drama of Don’t Worry Darling has been making headlines for months. In theaters (and only in theaters) on Friday, it’s also the latest buzz movie with no specific date when it will be available for streaming.
Films distributed by Warner Bros., such asbecame synonymous with same-day streaming releases last year, when every Warner Bros. 2021 hit at the same time, it arrives in cinemas. But HBO Max ended that practice earlier this year. Warner Bros. has pledged to give its theatrical releases at least 45 days in theaters exclusively — but it’s not obligated to put those movies on HBO Max as soon as the 45 days are up.
Adding another wrinkle to the mix: parent company Warner Bros. went through a big merger in the middle of this year, becoming a company called Warner Bros. Discovery. The change shook up leadership, and it brought about some surprising shifts in how WB movies are (or aren’t) released and the timeline for hitting HBO Max streaming. So even the precedents set by the movies earlier this year aren’t reliable for making predictions.
Here’s what you need to know.
How long until Don’t Worry Darling starts streaming?
HBO Max will be the first place Don’t Worry Darling will be available to stream, but it doesn’t have a streaming release date set yet.
However, some other recent movies may provide clues as to what to expect.
At least two titles have been released since the start of the Warner Bros. regime. Discovery, and they might suggest a possible streaming window for Don’t Worry Darling. Elvis, the biographical drama, hit theaters on June 24, and it was exclusively in theaters for 70 days before it began streaming on September 2. And DC League of Super-Pets, the animated film based on the DC franchise, hit theaters in July. 29, and it received theatrical exclusivity for 59 days ahead of its Monday streaming release date.
If Don’t Worry Darling stays in a similar range, it will arrive on HBO Max to air between around November 21 and December 2.
But that’s just an educated guess. That could happen as early as November 7 if for some reason the company decides to start streaming as soon as the 45-day guarantee in theaters is over. Or it could take until early next year.
Will it be “free” to stream?
Since HBO Max requires a paid subscription, nothing on the service is literally free. But HBO Max has never charged extra to watch a movie on its service.
Will Don’t Worry Darling pay off on HBO Max?
HBO Max has two tiers, one without ads which is more expensive and one cheaper with ads. On some other platforms, new theatrical movies sometimes pay off behind a more expensive tier when they start streaming, and back in the days when HBO Max was streaming same day all the time, those movies were exclusive to people paying the most expensive plan. That’s unlikely to happen with Don’t Worry Darling – it should be available to all HBO Max subscribers when it becomes available to stream.
