The man accused of ramming his vehicle into a group of law enforcement recruits in Whittier, Calif., was released on Thursday, ABC 7 reported Friday.

“Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said the suspect was only released until investigators can develop more evidence and present a stronger case to prosecutors,” the outlet said.

Authorities have arrested Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, 22, on suspicion of attempted murder of peace officers. ABC 7 cited prison records indicating he was released at 9:49 p.m. “due to insufficient evidence that a crime had been committed.”

“Due to the extreme complexity of the investigation, which includes ongoing interviews, a review of CCTV and additional evidence to analyze, homicide investigators have released Mr. Gutierrez from Department of Justice custody. sheriff,” explained a press release from officials.

On Thursday, a Sheriff’s Department investigator said officials believe the suspect intentionally rammed into the group of recruits.

The incident happened near Mills Avenue and Trumball Street on Wednesday as a class of about 75 recruits were jogging as part of a training exercise.

The driver reportedly drove on the wrong side of the road moments before crashing into the recruits.

The 25 recruits injured in the crash suffered injuries ranging from head trauma to loss of limbs. Villanueva said As of Thursday, there were seven still in hospital and two were in critical condition.

He also explained that officials struggled to get the driver out of the car after the crash, saying: “My understanding is that he was in the vehicle with his foot still on the accelerator and they were able to get him out of the vehicle and hold him.”

According to the ABC 7 article, Villanueva reported that the driver took a field sobriety test following the incident and “blew a 0.0.”

A mid-year survey found violent crime in cities across President Joe Biden’s (D) America rose more than 4% in the first six months of the year, according to Breitbart News.

In September, the White House tried to downplay Biden’s responsibility for the crime wave plaguing Americans, saying the issue is “complicated.”
