World Toilet Day was celebrated on November 19

American billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates recently opened up about some of the weird things he’s done in his life, in a post on LinkedIn. The 67-year-old billionaire took to the professional networking site to tag a post on World Toilet Day which was celebrated on November 19. Mr Gates admitted he had done the ”weird c*p’ in his life’ – drinking ‘faecal sludge water’ to ‘share a stage with human faeces. ”

The Microsoft co-founder wrote: “I’ve done some weird shit over the years: drank fecal sludge water with Jimmy Fallon, shared the stage with a pot of human feces and smelled the ‘smell of pit latrines.’ However, all of these acts were actually for a noble cause, as the message further reveals.

“These antics brought laughs, but my goal has always been to make people care about an issue that affects 3.6 billion people: lack of sanitation,” added the philanthropist. “Thanks to scientists and engineers around the world, we are one step closer to new solutions that will prevent illness and disease.”

The post also links to a blog post from July 2021, which talks about new sanitation solutions in the wake of population increases. In the blog post, he explained how, 10 years ago, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation “challenged the world to reinvent the toilet.”

In order to raise awareness, Mr Gates had participated in various public stunts, such as drinking water from “faecal sludge” in 2015. He even convinced TV host Jimmy Fallon to do the same, in the purpose of promoting the Omniprocessor, a machine that transforms faeces into water and electricity.

“I watched the piles of feces come up the conveyor belt and fall into a large bin. They worked their way through the machine, were boiled and processed,” Gates said at the time. A few minutes later, I took a long taste of the end result: a glass of delicious drinking water,’ reads a GatesNotes article.

A year later in 2016, he posted a photo of himself taking a giant whiff of the pit latrine smell. He said “the stench was foul and made me wince”, and described the smell as “a combination of sewage stench, barnyard sweat and bitter ammonia topped with vomit (or was is it parmesan?).”

In 2018, the billionaire shared the stage with a goblet of poop during a speech at the Reinvented Toilet Expo in Beijing. “I used a poo cup as a prop during my speech at the Reinvented Toilet Expo in Beijing. It caused the crowd to laugh out loud – but I brought it out to draw attention to a serious problem that kills over 500,000 people every year: poor sanitation,” reads another GatesNotes article.

The philanthropist is committed to solving a variety of global issues through his and his ex-wife’s charity, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
