An SUV drove into an Apple store in Hingham, Massachusetts on Monday morning, killing one person and hospitalizing sixteen others, according to the Plymouth County prosecutor.

At a press conference at Derby Streets Shops in Hingham on Monday afternoon, documented by CBS Boston, Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said Hingham police and firefighters were alerted to the scene at the Apple store around 10:45 a.m.

“When they arrived, there were people with many injuries inside the store,” Cruz said. “Sixteen people were transported to hospitals; fourteen to hospitals on the South Shore, two to hospitals in Boston. There was one death.

The deceased victim was male, but Cruz said he had no information to indicate whether he was an employee or a customer.

“This morning was an unthinkable morning, and people are trying to get through it and figure out what happened,” Cruz added.

Cruz stressed that “the investigation is active and ongoing” and officials “are very limited in what we can say at this point.”

“It appears from the outset, in a preliminary way, that a dark-colored SUV… passed… at an undetermined speed, through a window and hit several people,” he added.

When asked where the driver of the vehicle was, Cruz replied, “I don’t say where he is”, but replied that he was “with police officers”. The identity of the driver has not been made public.

Cruz said that “at about this point, we’re not able to tell you anything. [but] say that there is an active criminal investigation underway.

“We’re not going to be in a position where we can guess or speculate; we are going to take it slow and steady, as we always do in any criminal investigation, making sure we can get to the bottom of what happened,” he added.

WCVB captured footage of an interview with a visibly shaken witness named Anne, who works nearby, and a group of reporters. She said she heard “a huge bang”.

“Like not just broken glass or anything, it was a really strong blow,” Anne added.

“So my heart goes out to all of the Apple employees and all of the customers that are in that store, because no one should be dealing with it during the holiday week, no one,” she said.
