The Stillwater Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man suspected of stealing a car with a toddler inside and then ditching the car with the child still inside.
The theft of the 2015 black Nissan Sentra occurred about 9 a.m. Wednesday in the 1400 block of Lydia Circle, according to police.
About five minutes after the man allegedly stole the Sentra – with the 1 ½-year-old child inside, he was spotted leaving the Benson Development, headed west. The car was located behind a business in the 1700 block of Washington Avenue, but the suspect had left the scene.
The child was found unharmed inside the vehicle and was “shortly thereafter reunited with their parents,” police said.
Lakeview EMS responded and performed a welfare check on the child.
“The suspect is not considered dangerous and is presumed to be no immediate threat to society,” police said in a Facebook post.
Police also released a photo of the suspect taken from a home-security-system camera just minutes before the theft on Wednesday.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident, is asked to call Stillwater Police Det. David Wulfing at 651-351-4918.
