Manchester City will attempt to defend their title this year and win a record-breaking fourth straight championship. Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, and the rest must be defeated for Pep Guardiola's all-conquering City to win an unprecedented sixth league title in seven years. City also won the Champions League and FA Cup last season.

In the meantime, Luton Town, who rose from non-league in an extraordinary decade of development, is making its Premier League debut. They received promotion to the first flight after Championship champion Burnley and runner-up Sheffield United.

Despite having excellent possession, Burnley did not generate many worthwhile chances after scoring first. Amdouni attempted to give the hosts the lead back with a shot from outside the box, but it missed the target. Tottenham, after a sluggish start, have been the superior team. Maddison waited a while to participate, but he has since become an important element of their assault and has done fantastic work to link the midfield with the attack. Solomon has also hampered Roberts' progress somewhat with his brisk gait.

Foster scored Burnley's second goal of the game, getting on the end of a feed from Koleosho and hammering the ball in. Their advantage, though, only lasted for 12 minutes. Porro set Son free on the break, and the Spurs captain quickly exchanged passes with Solomon before attempting to chip the ball over the goal line at Old Trafford. Prior to Romeo scoring late in the half, the goalkeeper stopped a shot by Maddison. The center-back capitalized on a sloppy clearing at the edge of the box by driving his shot into the top corner. Upon their return, the Clarets were easily defeated by European contenders Aston Villa, with Matty Cash scoring twice and Moussa Diaby scoring once to lead Unai Emery's team to a 3-1 victory. Burnley, who are now in the relegation zone, will take heart from their narrow EFL Cup victory against Nottingham Forest during the previous week.
