Jimmy Buffett: Sir Elton John leads tributes after singer-songwriter and billionaire businessman dies

Jimmy Buffett, a US singer-songwriter who passed away on Friday at the age of 76, has received tributes from Sir Elton John.

Buffett, whose song "Margaritaville" shot him to popularity in 1977, described his style as "drunken Caribbean rock 'n' roll" and came to represent a carefree beach lifestyle.

Sir Elton John wrote on Instagram that Jimmy Buffett was a special and beloved performer. He was adored by his followers and never let them down.

"This is the most tragic news. Lovely man who left us far too soon. I, David [Furnish], and the family send our condolences to [his wife] Jane and the family.

The celebrity's passing was announced on his own Instagram page.

"Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs," it read.
