Mayweather’s out of Retirement: Who Will He Fight Next?
The former world champion recently made the announcement that he is “coming out of retirement in 2020.” On November 21, the retired boxer, 42, let the world know he’s ready to step back into the ring in an Instagram post.
In an undefeated career, Mayweather reached a 50-0 record in his last big fight in 2017. It ended in a victorious TKO against Conor McGregor in the 10th round, during a super-welterweight fight. With this final win, he surpassed Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 record as an undefeated champion. At 50-0, he became boxing’s first billion-dollar fighter.
On the same night that Mayweather announced he was coming out of retirement, he was seen photographed with Dana White, President of UFC. Mayweather said that the two were “working together again to bring the world another spectacular event in 2020.” The statement immediately sparked speculation about who Mayweather will possibly pair up against in his first comeback match.
“I’ve got calls to get back into the ring, but my health is my wealth,” he told Reuters. “Boxing is a very, very brutal sport. In the last few years a lot of fighters have died inside that squared circle… You have got to know when to hang it up. I had a great career.”
Well, fast forward to today, where it looks like what he knows now is that he’s not ready to hang up his boxing career just yet. With Mayweather announcing he’s coming back out of retirement; it begs the more important question: Who will he fight next? And what will the odds be against that potential first opponent when he steps back in the ring once more?
As we know, there are a lot of different factors that can affect his odds of keeping his perfect winning streak intact, especially his current age coming out of retirement for the third time, and his performance in his last couple of matches alone.
Continue reading to find out more about the big money payouts his previous retirements earned him when he decided to slip his gloves back on, and where his odds currently stand against his most speculated matchups, including Manny Pacquiao and Georges St-Pierre.
Two Previous Retirements
As America knows, comeback fights mean money fights. That especially seems to be the case with Floyd Money Mayweather. This isn’t the first time a retirement of his would leverage a lucrative comeback match. Mayweather, at 41, retired for the first time back in 2007 for a period of two years. He returned to the ring in a ruck against counterpuncher Juan Manual Marquez.
The comeback was wildly successful. Earning him over $600 million in just 10 fights, and five world championship titles in two weight classes. Those 10 fights alone earned him significantly more than his previous 39 bouts.
In 2015, he retired again in what would seem like the last and final time. At the start of the 12th round in a bout against inferior opponent Andre Berto, Mayweather gave a teary-eyed speech to his father and head coach, Floyd Mayweather Sr., in what looked like the final round of his illustrious career.
But, an opportunity for another big-money-win presented itself two years later. The opportunity was Conor McGregor, a mixed martial artist with a gift of gab. The technical knockout victory won him a hefty jackpot of $275 million. And that was all in a night’s work.
After the big win, Mayweather immediately announced his third retirement:
“This was my last fight tonight,” Mayweather said. “For sure. Tonight was my last fight. Tonight I chose the right dance partner to dance with.”
Although Mayweather ended the big winner of the night and added another notch on his undefeated record, now officially surpassing that of boxing legend Rocky Marciano’s, many boxing purists took issue. The issue? That fact that McGregor is famously known as a mixed martial artist and boxing novice.
Until his match up with Mayweather, McGregor never fought a professional four-round fight before. It would appear Mayweather had the unfair advantage but defended his win by saying “a win is a win.”
Odds of Mayweather Coming Out of Retirement Again
One thing we can bet on for sure with Mayweather coming out of retirement is a big-money match-up between him and whoever his next opponent might be. Some boxing fans were even speculating that Mayweather unretired for a rematch with Manny Pacquiao, but Mayweather himself has expressed no interest in a rematch as of this time.
That isn’t stopping oddsmakers from holding out hope, though. Sportsbooks still have their odds out for a rematch, and they’re allowing sports bettors to take full advantage. Mayweather is still the fan favorite to defeat projected underdog Pacquiao for the second time, at -260. That’s should he choose to step back in the ring with him.
There are other likely opponents Mayweather might potentially consider for his first fight out of his latest retirement. Here are where his next opponent odds stand at currently, according to BetOnline:
- Manny Pacquiao +200
- Georges St-Pierre +400
- Khabib Nurmagomedov +450
- Canelo Alvarez +1000
- Conor McGregor +1000
- Dana White +10000
While Mayweather seems content with his undefeated record, it’s clear he’s not ready to hang up his gloves just yet. According to the boxing betting sites listed here, you’ll discover which popular boxing bets and potential opponent matchups to focus on with a comeback like Mayweather’s.
With the unexpected announcement, it’s uncertain exactly what “coming out of retirement” might look like for Mayweather, with some thinking he’s past his prime. Whether it’s a one-off match, or a series of fights, the world will have to wait and see just what’s up his gloves in 2020.

The “Gypsy King” (GK) is Fury, an Irish Traveler who was born in Britain.
Fury remarked of Ngannou, “This guy is supposed to be the hardest puncher in the world, but let’s see how he reacts when he gets hit by the Big GK.” I’m eager to return to the field after dark.
On his route to becoming the UFC heavyweight champion, Ngannou established a reputation as a formidable puncher. He held that title until January, when he resigned due to a contentious relationship with the organization’s president, Dana White.

The Cameroonian has won 12 of his 17 knockouts in professional UFC fights, but other MMA fighters like Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva, and Conor McGregor have previously had difficulty transitioning to the boxing ring.
After Fury defeated Dillian Whyte in April of last year, Ngannou discussed a matchup with him.
“For the past three years, I’ve been longing to fight Tyson in the ring. “Being the best boxer I could be has always been my goal,” he stated.
“Now that I’m the undisputed MMA heavyweight champion, this is my chance to fulfill my dream and solidify my status as the baddest man on the planet,” he said.
As Fury has no mandatory challenger, the WBC declared that it would not be involved in the fight and granted him “special permission” for a non-title contest.

It’s a great way to work on your fitness, give you an excuse to hit the gym, meet new friends, and spend more time socializing. There are benefits to your physical and mental health, and it can be an effective way to make new friends when you move to a new city or when you’re at a new stage in your life.
It can feel intimidating to start any new activity, even if you already know the basics of the sport. Here’s how you can overcome your hesitation and get into the world of team sports as an adult.
Define Your Goal
Before you join a league, you should know why you want to start playing a team sport. Is it to get more active in your weekly routine? Is it to make friends and be more social? Is it to find an outlet for your sense of competition?
Knowing what you want to get out of a team sport will help you find the right league and right team. If you have more socially-oriented goals, look for a league that’s less about competition and more about having fun. It doesn’t hurt to start in a more recreational league anyway. If you find yourself chomping at the bit to play better and harder, then you’ll know you’re ready to move on.
Start with the Basics: Learn How to Play
With some leagues, coming in with just a basic understanding of the game can be enough to get started, but no one wants to be so bad they’re holding the team back. Even in leagues where it’s all just for fun, no one wants to stick out.
