Kobe Bryant is an American professional basketball player (August 23, 1978 – January 26, 2020). As a point guard, he spent his entire career in the National Basketball Association ( NBA) with the Los Angeles Lakers. Regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, Bryant won five NBA championships and was an 18-time All-Star, a 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, a 12-time member of the All-Defensive Team, the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), and a two-time NBA Finals MVP. Bryant also led the NBA in scoring twice and ranks fourth on the league’s all-time regular-season scoring and all-time postseason scoring lists.

Born in Philadelphia and raised partly in Italy, Kobe Bryant was recognized by the Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania as a top secondary basketball player in the United States.

Former NBA player Joe Bryant’s uncle, after graduation he entered the NBA draught of 1996 and was picked by the Charlotte Hornets with the 13th overall selection, which he then traded to the Lakers.

Kobe Bryant became known as a high-flyer and a favorite fan when he won the 1997 Slam Dunk Contest and in his second season, he was named All-Star. The couple has led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA championships, from 2000 to 2002, amid feuds with teammate Shaquille O’Neal.

His parents named him after Kobe’s famous beef, Japan that they saw on the menu of a restaurant. His middle name Bean was taken from his father’s “Jellybean” nickname. Kobe Bryant began playing basketball when he was three, and as he grew up, the Lakers became his favorite team. When Bryant was six years old, his father retired from the NBA and relocated his family to Rieti, Italy, to continue to play basketball at a lower level. They moved to Reggio Calabria, then Pistoia and Reggio Emilia after two years.

Among them were the Naismith High School Player of the Year, the Gatorade Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year, the McDonald’s All-American, the all-American first-team Parade, and the USA Today’s All-US First Team selection. The varsity coach of Bryant, Greg Downer, said that, while the team is the leading player, he was “a full player who dominates” and commended his work ethic.

Kobe Bryant introduced R&B singer Brandy to his senior position in 1996. Finally, Bryant, the 17-year-old, chose to join the NBA directly, becoming just the sixth player in the NBA’s history. Bryant signed a two-year contract extension worth $48.5 million in November 2013. A knee injury hindered his season. Bryant revealed in November 2015 that he would retire at the end of the season. He got 1.9 million votes in the 2016 All-Star game and became the oldest player in an NBA game to score 60 points or more.

Along with eight others, Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas in California on 26 January 2020, as per TMZ Sports. His daughter, Gianna Maria Onore, was also confirmed to be on board and died in the helicopter crash. His wife, Vanessa, and three of her daughters – Natalia, Bianca, and Capri, their newborn, survived Bryant.
