This article features Tomas Machac, who is returning from injury after two and a half months. Daniel Altmaier vs Coleman Wong
Head-to-Head: Altmaier 0-1 Wong
Daniel Altmaier has had a below-par season so far, but on hard courts, it has been terrible, to say the least. He has a 1-7 win-loss record on this surface, and that one win came recently in Montreal. Coleman Wong qualified with two straight-set wins and is in much better form than the German. The only time these two met resulted in an easy win for Wong, and I expect a similar outcome on this surface at ATP Cincinnati.

Vit Kopriva vs Quentin Halys
Head-to-Head: Kopriva 1-0 Halys
Vit Kopriva is making his second main-draw appearance at the ATP Cincinnati Open and will be looking for his maiden win. Kopriva has won the majority of his matches on clay this season, but he has won all his first-round matches at the biggest hard-court tournaments in 2026. Quentin Halys will be looking to change that with his big serve and aggressive groundstrokes that translate well on this surface. Halys has also played qualifiers, so I expect him to have adjusted to the court speed. The Frenchman is my pick to advance.

Nuno Borges vs Thanasi Kokkinakis
Head-to-Head: Borges 1-0 Kokkinakis
Nuno Borges reached the fourth round in Montreal with some impressive wins and will arrive here full of confidence. He has never been past the second round in Cincinnati, and that would be his first goal this week. Thanasi Kokkinakis is ranked outside the top 400 and enters via a protected rating. His fitness has been an issue throughout his career, and it will be called into question in this match after he retired against Alexei Popyrin in the Montreal qualifier. Borges has the edge.

Tomas Machac vs Pablo Carreno Busta
Head-to-Head: first meeting
Tomas Machac suffered a left foot injury in his second-round match at the French Open and has been sidelined since. Having not played for over two months, I expect Machac to be slightly rusty and far from his best. Pablo Carreno Busta remains a consistent player and will be able to put Machac’s fitness to the test. I am going with the Spaniard in this one at ATP Cincinnati.
