FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Groups
Similar to soccer’s FIFA World Cup, the basketball version put on by FIBA features a preliminary round-robin group stage. There are four groups, each featuring four teams. The second- and third-place teams will advance to a Round of 12, while the first-place team from each group will advance directly to the quarterfinals. Including the third-place game, the tournament will feature a total of 36 matchups.
The qualification round is scheduled for Sept. 8-9, followed by the quarterfinals on Sept. 10 and semifinals on Sept. 12. The third-place and championship games will close the tournament on Sept. 13.

Clark was named MVP of the World Cup qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico in March. The former Iowa women’s basketball star averaged 11.6 points and a tournament-best 6.4 assists per game while leading the Americans to a 5-0 record.

Duke women’s basketball head coach Kara Lawson will lead Team USA. She will be assisted on the bench by WNBA head coaches Stephanie White, Natalie Nakase and Nate Tibbetts, while Dallas Wings head coach Jose Fernandez and Duke assistant Tia Jackson will serve as scouts.
Originally, this roster also featured four-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson and five-time All-Star Kelsey Plum, but both were ruled out four days before the World Cup began due to what Team USA called “health reasons.”
Wilson was the MVP of the 2022 World Cup, which was Team USA’s fourth consecutive time capturing the World Cup and 11th overall. Replacing them are a pair of young players from the Washington Mystics in Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen.
