House of the Dragon

There is nothing viewers hate more than sprawling waits between new seasons of shows in the streaming era, and there’s some bad news about an HBO megahit, House of the Dragon season 4.
In a new interview with Screenrant, star Olivia Cooke reveals when House of the Dragon season 4 will start filming, after being asked if she’s starting to prepare for the production process:
“I haven’t. I haven’t. We start filming next spring, but I don’t really know. I’m sure it’ll take me ages. You know, I’m English. My emotions are far, far deep down. […] you know a year later that I’ll finally feel the grief from that show ending.”
House of the Dragon season 3’s finale was on August 9, 2026, and even if we’re talking best-case scenario and filming begins in March 2027, that’s seven months later. May would be a full nine months. Rather ridiculous.
What does that mean for the release date?
- Filming on House of the Dragon season 3 began in late March 2025, and the season was released on June 21, 2026, a gap of 14 months.
- So, if filming for House of the Dragon begins in March-May of 2027, that would be a potential release date of May to July 2028.
- That would be 1 year 11 months or 2 years 1 month after season 3 aired. It’s not the worst in the streaming market to be sure, but you’ll recall that not all that long ago, we used to get 10 episodes of Game of Thrones every single year. Here, it’s going to be close to two years to get what is likely to be 8 episodes of House of the Dragon.
Two points here, however. This is the last wait for House of the Dragon we’ll have, as season 4 is the end of the show as it adapts the end of George RR Martin’s story. However, we will not be completely devoid of Game of Thrones content in that break, as there will be season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a series that HBO Max wants to be essentially annual from here.
After this, there is meant to be an Aegon’s Conquest blockbuster movie, which will be the first of its kind in the universe. There are various other projects in the works as new shows that will arrive someday, if they make it to air, like Ten Thousand Ships, Nine Voyages and The Golden Empire, though the exact status of each are unknown. The point being, HBO Max does not want to let go of this universe, probably ever.
