Weather whiplash: Cooler conditions follow record-breaking high temps in DC area – WTOP News

You may have been sporting summer attire Wednesday, but you’ll have to bring out a light jacket again Thursday as cooler weather follows record-breaking October temperatures in the D.C. region.

It will be about 30 degrees cooler with temperatures in the low to mid 60s, with cloudy skies, according to 7News Meteorologist Eileen Whelan

“With that cold front to our south, we’ll have a chance for a few showers,” Whelan said.

Even though temperatures won’t fall much during the evening hours, there’s a chance of a patchy fog, which could impact your Friday morning commute.

More warm weather will return Friday, with sunny skies and temperatures rising to the low 80s. Also, there will be southwest winds with gusts of 30 to 40 mph.

Between 6 and 9 p.m., a strong cold front could lead to some severe thunderstorms and damaging wind gusts.

The weather whiplash continues this weekend, with cooler temperatures. Saturday will be partly to mostly sunny with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 50s, but clear skies and winds set up frost, which could lead to freezing temperatures Sunday morning.

On Sunday, a cold start could bring frost to most of the region. But it will improve slightly in the afternoon, with sun and temperatures near 60 degrees.

The shifting weather forecast began after summer-like conditions on Wednesday. The National Weather Service said D.C.’s 90-degree high is the latest in the year that the District has reached 90 degrees. The previous record of Oct. 11 was set in 1919.
