The family that goes after crime syndicates together … just butts heads, if one is an ex-con and the other is a DEA agent who was thought to be dead until recently. Such is the case for Mickey (Morena Baccarin) on Sheriff Country right now. TV Insider spoke with showrunner Matt Lopez about all the latest reveals. Warning: Spoilers for Sheriff Country Season 2 Episode 2 ahead!
Mickey, Eva (Rachel Ticotin), and Wes’ (W. Earl Brown) investigation into the Stoyanovs continues, with the help of Sharon (Diane Farr) to plant a bug in the bakery out of which they operate. But in order to win them over in a bid to be undercover with them, Wes spills about the bug. While Eva’s ready to agree to no more secrets going forward, Mickey’s not too happy and walks out, choosing instead to bring Boone (Matt Lauria) in as she goes about bringing down the human traffickers her own way, with someone she can trust.
Below, showrunner Matt Lopez unpacks this episode and teases what’s next.
Wes is taken at the end of this episode, but is that maybe a good thing and a sign that he’s being trusted for this undercover thing he’s doing?
Matt Lopez: That’s a great observation by you, Meredith. It’s not intended to be that way, but what we’ll see in, really starting in Episode 3, is this very intense cat and mouse with Wes, who is in the hands of the Stoyanovs, and it’s an open question: Why do they want him and do they trust him? And as Mickey and Eva are sort of working the case from the outside, we’ll see Wes in a classic Wes Fox fashion using all of his wiles and all of his guile to work the case from the inside.
CBS
You brought up the psychological toll on Boone, what happened to him, and Cassidy (Michele Weaver) and Hank (Ian Quinlan) are concerned about him in this episode, picking up on things, they’re right to be obviously. So what can you say about what we’re going to see there going forward and when is Mickey going to become privy to it? Especially because now they’re working closely on this case because she trusted him to bring him in, unlike what happened in the finale and with that tension.
Boone is keeping a secret from Mickey for sure. He’s trying to do the honorable thing. He knows Mickey needs him right now. He knows the ECSO needs him right now, and he views the situation as he might be the only person, while Mickey is pulled away by Wes and her mom and Skye and all of this stuff that’s going on. Boone, I think, perceives himself as the only person who can hold the ECSO together. And there’s some great stuff coming up with Cassidy and Hank impressing on Boone that that’s not the case, and Boone will really have to wrestle with his place at the ECSO and with Mickey. Like I said, they have a lot of emotions going back to last year to unpack.
And then of course there’s Emmy York (Jenny Raven), the Edgewater County Medical Examiner, and that relationship with Boone is showing some embers are possibly becoming some flames. So we’ll see, and there will be moments where Mickey — there was that great moment in the last episode last year where Mickey sort of looks back and you can almost see her gears turning thinking, as I like to put it, did I walk past a chunk of gold to pick up a rock with Alec Kane? And we’ll unpack all of that this season.
Love Sharon meeting Santos and being mad at her. The sisters’ relationship is just so good. It feels like we’re really seeing how far they’ve come from when we first saw them together. And it’s also more of just like the connective tissue between the two shows. Is that something that we’re going to see continuing?
Yes. There are some great upcoming — In addition to we got our big crossover event coming, which is really fun, where we sent multiple cast members from Fire in Sheriff and multiple cast members from Sheriff in Fire, but we’ll also continue to do what we call in the writer’s room our bridge episodes, which is just like … Sharon will make an appearance or Manny [Kevin Alejandro] will make an appearance or Skye [Amanda Arcuri] will be in Fire Country. We continue to weave the fabric of this universe together and the audience just loves it. And as creators, we love it too. It’s fun to sort of… It’s like getting the Avengers together kind of.
Travis (Christopher Gorham) made the right choice when it comes to Todd, but are we going to continue to see him tested?
One thing you’re going to see with Travis, which I think is really, really fun, there’s some great Mickey Travis stuff coming up. So the implosion of Fraley Horizons will leave Travis sort of struggling to find his place. To a lesser extent, Skye too, but certainly to Travis. And what he will find is that the Fraley name and the social circles in which the Fraley name used to be welcome now turn their back on him. And what we’ll find with him is he sort of will return to his roots, which is being a lawyer. Travis started in the public defender’s office, and when the upper social circles of Edgewater turned their back on him, he will find an unlikely source of not only a client base, but friendship and kinship with Deadwater, of all places. The folks up there who need a lawyer, they can call Travis. It’s almost like a little bit of a Lincoln Lawyer vibe for him where he’s like a street lawyer sort of trying to find his way and in a town where his name used to mean a great deal and now is in tatters. The other nice thing about that is defense lawyers and sheriffs, there’s just a natural [butting heads]. So he and Mickey will have some memorable cases that they are on the opposite sides of.
