New York Jets Activate Omar Cooper Jr. for New England Game

The New York Jets have officially activated wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. to the regular 53-man roster for today’s game against the New England Patriots.

Cooper has been on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain he sustained in the Jets’ opening day victory over the Tennessee Titans.

The Jets are also expected to activate tight end Kenyon Sadiq, who has been in the NFL concussion protocols.

Sadiq practiced fully on Friday, but is listed as questionable for the game and may be a game-time decision. When healthy, he is a speedy weapon for offensive coordinator Frank Reich, who used him to great effect in the Week 3 game against Detroit. In that contest, Sadiq caught 7 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, a performance that won him the NFL Rookie of the Week award.

In another move, linebacker Jaden Keller has been elevated to the regular roster from the practice squad for today’s game.

Cooper returned to practice this week for the first time since his injury. His resume is thin so far – just five snaps, but he impressed with a pinballing 30-yard reception in the Titans game.

He joins a Jets wide receiver corps that is looking for a spark. Adonai Mitchell, the Jets No. 2 receiver, will miss his fourth consecutive game today with a hand injury. In his absence, the Jets have used Isaiah Williams, Sterling Shepard and a host of others in the position with little to show, save a 58-yard TD by Williams in the Bears game.

Last season at national champion Indiana, Cooper had 69 receptions for 937 yards and 13 TDs. He was selected in the first round (No. 30 overall) by the Jets and was expected to be a key reserve.

Keller, a 6-3, 235-pounder, will play in his third consecutive game for the Jets, which means a decision on his future must be made after this game. He played a total of 38 snaps on special teams against the Bears and Browns.

During preseason, Keller had 10 total tackles (5 solo) and a pass defensed. He was added to the practice squad on Aug. 31, released on Sept. 15, and brought back a week later.

Keller played at Virginia Tech in his college days, and last season played in 11 games and ranked third on the team with 50 tackles. In 52 games with the Hokies, Keller totaled 181 defensive tackles and 1.5 sacks.
